Our open world has been undergoing in-depth geopolitical, societal and economic upheavals, requiring ever-more competitiveness and security for businesses, people and countries. To meet those new needs, at Bertin Technologies, we rely on the real strengths of our DNA: passion for innovation, field expertise of diversified technologies and agile mindset to anticipate market trends.
In 2014, our activity grew in close synergy with our parent company, CNIM. In particular, we conducted major research and development in the field of energy efficiency, related to absorption heat pumps. This initiative allowed CNIM to acquire and successfully promote a new range of equipment and services in this area (p.4).
In a fast moving IT market, we provided specific solutions for cyber security and big data multimedia content processing, to various customers throughout the world. That offer is one of our priorities for growth in 2015 (p.12).
Drawing on our success in the field of lab equipment as well as chemical, biological and nuclear detection, Bertin went one step further in late 2014 with the acquisition of Saphymo, a leading French provider of solutions for detecting and measuring ionizing radiation. As a result, Bertin has become a key player in the field of scientific instrumentation for defense, nuclear, environment and life science sectors (p.8).
Last but not least, by incorporating the Johnson & Johnson Santé Beauté R&D site near Bordeaux in early 2014, our subsidiary Bertin Pharma, has unquestionably positioned itself on the growing market of R&D services for OTC, over-the-counter drugs (p.14).

Heat pump
Recognized by its customers and the DREAL*, Bertin’s business in industrial risk management is booming. To cope with the demand, an office was opened in the Lyon area.For example, a FMECA* analysis was conducted for an industrialist supplying fluids to a range of companies set up on an industrial platform. The analysis established solutions for improvement to avoid critical production shutdowns.

The French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (IRSN) sought to identify the risks of a boiling crisis in used fuel storage pools in the event of a Fukushima-type situation. To meet that request, Bertin carried out the pre-definition stage of an experimental mock-up based on 3D-multiphysics modeling.

Rio Tinto Alcan, global leader in the aluminum industry, is relying on Bertin Technologies to improve its pollutant capture systems and limit the discharge from its aluminium smelters. To develop and qualify the different solutions, Bertin Technologies is using its digital multiphysics test beds, based on its CPS_C code.

Developing a strategic growth driver was the aim of one of our customers, a leader in pyrotechnical equipment.After analyzing the market and competition, Bertin Technologies defined a diversification strategy with a move towards deep offshore equipment: a promising market due to its substantial operational constraints. Thanks to that strategy, the customer obtained its initial financing on the new market.
Bertin installed its Energy Management System for the energy supplier, Albioma, enabling them to optimize solar-produced energy storage and prolong the lifetime of batteries.

Optimizing heat lost during industrial processes has become a major challenge in view of reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Encouraged by Bertin’s R&D work, CNIM decided to invest in this new line of business and acquired INVEN, a specialist in absorption heat pumps. CNIM builds the heat pump systems and Bertin Technologies conducts the basic engineering.

The partnership between the RATP and Bertin Ergonomics, a recognized expert in designing and developing control rooms, gained momentum for the specification of the RATP’s Central Command Posts (CCP). In 2014, the Bertin Ergonomics teams (ergonomists, architects, lighting and acoustics specialists) focused on 5 next-generation Central Command Posts for the Paris subway. The posts have now been optimized to ensure traffic regulation as well as provide information to subway passengers.
Pôle Emploi, France’s National Employment Center, renewed its trust in Bertin Ergonomics by signing another framework contract for 2015-2019. Pôle Emploi’s IT management board (DGA SI*) has given Bertin Ergonomics the job of implementing an IT system fitting the needs of its agents and users. The objective is to continue developing and optimizing the computer tools used by the 45,000 agents through a user-focused design approach and the integration of new digital technology through use.*DSI : Direction des Systèmes d’Information

Dedicated to digital transformation via the user experience (ergonomics, UX, design, sociology), Bertin has made an innovation area available to its customers to identify, build and experiment the use of future applications. Airbus A350-900 received its EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) and FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) certification in mid-2014. New methodologies and tools (lateral screens in the cockpit) for evaluating pilot workload were
implemented by Bertin Ergonomics. Evaluation campaigns for the Human Factor certification were conducted on simulators as well as on actual planes. That milestone marks the result of 6 years of work by Bertin Ergonomics alongside Airbus teams on the A350 program.

Sterilwave® Precellys® Coriolis®
Vietnam has adopted Sterilwave® to manage biohazardous waste from hospitals. Within the framework of funding from the World Bank, Sterilwave® was installed at two hospital locations in Vietnam. The easy-to-use equipment makes it possible to convert the waste in 30 minutes, i.e. to bring its infectious risk down to the same level as household waste, and reduce its volume by 80%.
When the new Precellys® Evolution, a biological sample homogenizer, was first launched, the American lab Leidos was invited to test it. The Leidos research team immediately bought the product, won over by the instrument’s ergonomics, polyvalence and the significant reduction in time needed for sample preparation. A consecration all the more remarkable as it came from a BSL-4 lab, the highest biosafety level for labs.
Bertin Corp., the American distributor of Bertin Technologies, now offers its products directly online! The e-commerce website lets American webusers place products distributed by Bertin Corp into their “shopping cart”. Thanks to a wish-list system, shoppers can receive a direct quote for some pieces of higher-priced equipment. This new tool makes it possible to place simplified orders in “real time”.

Better detecting Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) threats : that’s the mission to be carried out by the new entity, Bertin Systems & Instrumentation, formed with Saphymo within Bertin Technologies. A key player in instrumentation solutions for radiation detection and measurement, Saphymo, like Bertin, works in the fields of nuclear energy, environment, defense and security.

South Korea has acquired Second Sight®, a gas detection camera using infrared technology, for the surveillance of major events or official buildings. The aim is to detect clouds of threatening gas as early as possible so as to protect the population or government members. When put through technical benchmark testing, the camera’s easy implementation and real-time interpretation of results allowed Bertin to gain an advantage over competing equipment.

Sump strainers designed and manufactured by Bertin Technologies have been installed in the reactor core at the new Chinese nuclear power plant (NPP) in Fuqing. Key elements in power plant safety, sump strainers are designed to retain the impurities circulating in the reactor cooling circuit in case of incidents. As a result, they prevent damage to the pumps. This project illustrates the Bertin team’s ability to justify their rationale of design choices for complex systems in thermohydraulic accident scenarios.On November 19, 2014, the Fuqing 1 power plant was commissioned, making it the 21st Chinese nuclear power plant in operation.

What will the weather be like in 20 years? To answer that question and improve forecasts, the European Space Agency has gone into the active phase of the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) program. Thales Alenia Space renewed its trust in Bertin for the supply of a new optical test system. The system is intended to calibrate and qualify measuring instruments embedded on the 6 satellites that will be launched between 2018 and 2037.
After several years of development and testing, HoverEye-EX® passed the French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) certification phase with flying colors. It is currently the only certified turboprop helicopter-type UAV. Equipped with a camera, operational both day and night, it uses the VigiSight® advanced image processing module and can operate from earth as well as from a naval platform. It has already proven its real operational capacities during missions aboard the CNIM Landing Catamaran.

Vecsys has signed a contract with a major UAE energy operator for the deployment of its new product devoted to the transcription of telephone conversations.LiveSpeech allows call centers to detect key expressions in conversations with callers and issue alerts in real time. Based on information displayed on their screens, hotliners can adapt their responses to handle requests more efficiently.
Vecsys has won its first contract in Asia. The multilingual automatic transcription solution, Mediaspeech®, has been chosen to integrate a major Radio/TV monitoring platform in Singapore. A very high-security CC-EAL 5-certified software platform, PolyXene® is being evaluated by the French Armed Forces to meet the needs of partitioning classified information and secured exchange of sensitive data. Like medication, beauty products call for innovation and effectiveness that only science can provide.Drawing on the skills acquired in the pharmaceutical industry, Bertin Pharma is applying its expertise to cosmetics: innovative formulation of a wide range of textures and sensorial attributes, allergic response assessment, skin penetration improvement, or even higher effectiveness thanks to proprietary biological models. As a result, Bertin Pharma has successfully won several projects evaluating the effectiveness and toxicity of candidate products for a major cosmetic group.
Obesity and diabetes are two of the biggest health problems of the century. Over the past 30 years, obesity has more than doubled and now concerns 1.5 billion adults in the world. As such, Bertin Pharma was the first European company to market ghrelin assay kits, known as the “hunger hormone”, a determining factor in the treatment of many diseases related to weight. The ready-to-use kits for measuring ghrelin have been available since 2014 in a range of formats. They are now available for several species including humans, rats, mice, pigs and dogs, regardless of how the blood is collected.
