Message from the Principal

Key achievements:

• 78 students progressing to university.

• 2 to Cambridge University.

• Best ever Mathematics GCSE results.

• South Yorkshire Rugby Cup wins for Year 7, Year 9 and 1st XV.

And much, much more!

These outcomes are a tribute to the hard work of students, staff and parents over seven years. It is also good to see Trinity achieving some other stunning individual performances at A level and in the Year 11 GCSE results, including our best ever Mathematics GCSE results. Congratulations to all students who achieved the highest ever average points scores in both Sixth Form and Year 11 external examinations. These included the best results in the country for Physics and Photography A level, in terms of value added.

This yearbook celebrates all of the activities of an action packed year, but I would like to mention especially the great school productions of Big, the musical and Lord of the Flies, which were

of the highest standard, and in sport the triple South Yorkshire Rugby cup wins for Year 7, Year 9 and the 1st XV which were unique.

Thanks to the many staff who gave their time throughout the year to the numerous teams, clubs and societies. There were also many great celebrations such as our Dance Show, Arts Awards Night, Sports Awards evening, Science, Maths and English weeks as well as the celebration of the Queens Royal Jubilee.

Last year saw the Trinity Academy Carol Service with the theme of ‘Angels’ and a Prize Giving that looked to the Olympics based on the Bible verse “let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us” (Hebrews Chapter 1 verse 2). Both events were outstanding, and the Olympics weren’t bad either. We were all awestruck by the Paralympics and Olympics, which lived up to the strapline ‘inspiring a generation’.

As we look back on the last year for the first time we have come to the point where the students leaving Trinity Academy have only ever known the Academy as their secondary school.

It is therefore wonderful to note that 70+ Upper Sixth Students progressed to University this autumn, the largest number so far; it is also notable that Kirsty and Zoe Green were the first two students from Trinity to gain places at Cambridge University.

INTRODUCTION

Congratulations to all students who achieved the highest ever average points scores…

Trinity Academy 2012

From Jessica Ennis in the heptathlon to Ellie Simmonds in the 400m freestyle, which of us could fail to be inspired by the courage and determination of our athletes? Yet there were many people who did not win medals but whose performances were also outstanding because they achieved their personal best. Few of us will forget the runner who gained a standing ovation and the loudest cheer despite finishing almost seven minutes adrift in his 1500 metres heat, Houssein Omar Hassan, from Djibouti, finishing the race in last place in 11 minutes 23.50 seconds: he had injured his ankle at the start but continued to do his best and finish despite this.

We can translate such efforts into school life and say we need to prepare ourselves for the race of life, with all its disappointments and encouragements, give our personal best and display the perseverance we need to succeed, not just on the sports field, on the stage and in the classroom but

also in all our relationships with others, cheering each other on and giving mutual encouragement. As we look to 2012-13 we take our inspiration from these athletes: “let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us”. We will not all compete in élite sport but we will compete against ourselves in the everyday things of life, and that is the contest that really matters because it brings reward to ourselves, our families and our community.

Yours sincerely

Ian Brew, Principal

ESF FOUNDATION SPORTS NEWS

Students from Trinity Academy joined colleagues from sister schools in the Emmanuel Schools Foundation for a week-long rugby tour of the North.

Based in Ambleside, in the Lake District, the ESF Lions first tackled the might of Barnard Castle School, which has produced more than thirty internationals in the past few years including Leicester Tiger and England

player Mathew Tait, his brother Alex who plays on the wing for Newcastle Falcons and Rory Clegg, who plays for Harlequins and England Saxons. Next in the firing line was Sedbergh School, which has produced over thirty England players and as many again for Scotland and the other home countries. Finally the Lions, tackling their seventh tour, were scheduled to play the U16s Fylde Rugby Club, of Blackpool,

a team with ambitious plans as it dominates National League Division 1. And at last a Lions victory: 33-12, with two tries from Callum Storr (11Forster).

Trinity Academy’s Max Smith (11Chappell) said: “We arrived as individual players from four separate schools but very quickly became a team, with a common passion for rugby, ready to take on the opposition.”

L-R: King’s Academy player Matthew Elcoate, 16, of Easterside, with Emmanuel College’s Jason Boyle, 15, of Felling, Bede Academy’s Matthew Richmond, 15, of Blyth and Trinity Academy’s Max Smith, 16, of Thorne

The ESF Pumas tour took place over four days in the Cotswolds, playing Cheltenham College, Dean Close and Chipping Norton, all with strong hockey reputations.

We won two matches very convincingly. Through the week we had lots of fun meeting new people from our sister schools: this was a highlight.

We also went bowling and to the Cotswold Wildlife Park. It was really good to see the wild animals, especially the meerkats, the penguins and the very funny ‘common squirrel monkeys’. Throughout the week my hockey improved loads and I had a great time.

ESF OLYMPICS 2012 ESF FOUNDATION

Move Over London

Students from Trinity Academy travelled to their sister school, The King’s Academy in Middlesbrough, host for this year’s annual Emmanuel Schools Foundation Olympics.

Hundreds of students come together each year to pit their best athletes in a challenge of sporting prowess. Young people from Emmanuel College in Gateshead and Bede Academy in Blyth, Northumberland, were also

competing for honours.

Competitions included football, rugby, hockey, netball, volleyball and triathlon, featuring rowing machines, static bicycles and the treadmill.

Trinity came out on top as clear winners in the rugby, Bede won in the football competition, following in the footsteps of Blyth Spartans, and Emmanuel in the netball, but the overall winners had to be The King’s, who took top honours in

the volleyball, hockey and the gym. Well done, The King’s!

Principal of Trinity Academy Ian Brew said: “All four schools have incredibly committed and talented athletes and the Olympics provides the ideal opportunity to test their mettle. There has been a palpable buzz about the place and a healthy air of determined but friendly rivalry, which resulted in some very exciting displays of sporting talent.”

Young sportsmen and -women from Trinity Academy took their inspiration from this year’s Olympics as they battled it out for glory on the pitch, on court and in the gymnasium. Trinity gets past The King’s

Exam results have just arrived, and our Year 11s and 13s had much to celebrate, setting a whole host of new records in the College’s twenty-third year. 99% of Year 11 students picked up 5 A*-C grades. Yet this achievement was overshadowed by our hens in Chick Week earlier in the summer, who achieved a 100% success rate – each egg hatching into a fluffy yellow chick, to everyone’s delight.

It has been a specially good year for Technology: our engineers made it to the National Final of the F1 in Schools competition with their 70 mph model car, and Sixth Former Emily Miller was named top engineer in the country at the

Big Bang Fair where Prince Andrew was among the admirers of her latest invention – a baby monitor that checks babies’ breathing and temperature.

Not to be outdone, musician Beth Carabine has joined the world famous Reg Vardy Band, who with Beth’s drumming skills have just won first prize against some of the best brass bands in the country. Earlier in the summer, Year 10 student Ben Gorman wowed an audience of 2,000 at The Sage, Gateshead with a solo rendition of Mozart’s piano concerto No. 21, playing a nine foot Steinway grand – and internationally renowned vocal quartet Blake enlisted Emmanuel students to sing backing vocals on their recent national tour.

Congratulations are also due to Robin Larkin, 2011 British Junior Tap Champion, and Katie Ross who won the other Turner Prize – a competition to design the poster advertising the controversial art exhibition, which was hosted at the Baltic for the first time this year.

Where do I stop? All but one of our netball teams won Gateshead’s league, as did Year 8 and Year 11 rugby teams; our hockey boys were placed third nationally, and our girls reached the national semis; success in athletics, cross country, rowing… it’s all happening!

There’s definitely something about being an ESF school: you have done so well too! We are proud to be part of your family. It’s been an honour to meet you on the sports field, in the debating chamber, on the deck of the Stavros Niarchos and in villages of South Africa. We wish you another magnificent year in 2012-13.

Citius. Altius. Fortius!

Firstly, can I say what delight it has been to witness the many ESF events that have taken place this year? Whether it be the ESF Olympics, the Lions rugby tour, the Pumas hockey tour, the Sixth Form PTE Conference or the Business Game, it has been wonderful to see students from all four schools engaging in healthy competition and debate. I, as you, greatly appreciate being part of our family of schools and all the benefits that it brings.

Here at The King’s, we have had a great year. Amidst the celebrations surrounding the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympic and Paralympic Games, we have been working hard in the classroom and engaging in a huge range of extra-curricular activities, trips and events. One particular highlight this year has been the two public examination results days, when our Year 11 and

Year 13 students achieved record-breaking results, many gaining grades that exceeded all expectations. It just goes to show what sustained hard work and commitment can achieve. We were also delighted to receive a visit from Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE, winner of eleven Paralympic gold medals, who spoke to us about the importance of determination in all we do and developing in ourselves a “never give up” attitude as we go through life.

I guess there are times when we all feel like giving up. Sometimes, life’s challenges can be extremely difficult to face. Sometimes, we face tasks that seem absolutely impossible to achieve. Sometimes, things can really get on top of us and we look for a way out. I am reminded of the words of Marie Curie, the famous physicist and chemist: “Life is not easy for any of us. But what of that? We must have perseverance and above all confidence in ourselves. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that this thing must be attained.”

Each day I am reminded of the incredible gifts and talents of the students of The King’s Academy. Whether in academic studies, sport, art, music, drama – the young people of south Middlesbrough never cease to amaze me. These are God-given gifts and talents, and so are yours. Remember that it is your responsibility to seek out your gifts and talents, and to help your friends discover their gifts from God. You need to make sure you unwrap your gifts and put them to good use!

James Chapter 1 verse 17 says this: “Every good and perfect gift is from above and comes down from the Father who made the heavenly lights, in whom there is no inconsistency or shifting shadow.”

So that’s this year’s message from me and all of us at The King’s: discover your gifts, put them to good use, and have a great year!

With all our best wishes,

Christopher Drew, Principal

Bede Academy Message

BEST WISHES FROM BLYTH

Key achievements:

The Academy received its first Section 5 Ofsted Inspection in May and we were awarded “Good” overall with Inspectors commenting particularly on the excellent academic progress and behaviour of students. We were delighted with this result in only our third year since opening.

Key Stage 2 SATs results improved for the third year, beating national averages. Students received their GCSE results, the very first for Bede Academy and truly excellent they were: 14% A*; 30% A and A*; 56% 5A*-C including English and Maths; 78% 5A*-C; 30% English Baccalaureate; and eight students achieved at least 5A* grades.

Citius, altius, fortius, the Olympics motto which means “Faster, higher, stronger,” was the theme for this year’s Presentation Day as we honoured students in both primary and secondary years for their notable achievements academically, in sport, music and many other activities.

This year’s production of Oliver! received excellent reviews following outstanding performances, particularly Ashleigh Charlton as Nancy, Jay Robinson as Fagin, Daniel Collins as Oliver and Thomas Johnson as Bill Sykes. Behind the scenes, the students’ expertise in the technical aspects was of the highest professional standards – Lewis Martin on lighting and Jack Burn and Jack Herron on sound.

Dr Sasa touched the hearts of many students speaking about his work in Burma and students have worked throughout the year to raise more funds to support his charity which provides healthcare to his people. Support has also been given closer to home with funds raised and food donated for those less fortunate and homeless.

Over 100 Sixth Form students joined the academy in September; as the academy moves closer to being full in September 2013. The students’ first week included a two-day induction in the Lake District before a return to their

dedicated Sixth Form building, Trinity House.

There were many memorable moments this year: the 12-hour overnight triathlon to raise funds for those taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award; a music concert where all 90 children from Year 1 played the violin; the first Year 11 Leavers’ Ball; the Academy being represented at Hexham Abbey for the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations; Year 5 students visiting the regional newspaper office and preparing articles about Bede Academy. All students should take great pride in their involvement as they develop into young men and women of good character.

The ESF activities have been a great source of encouragement and unity, with our own Olympics, the Business Game and the Tall Ships Challenge. There have been many other opportunities for students and staff to meet and develop friendships whilst sharing the same vision and core values, and striving to achieve their personal best.

May you have another wonderful and exciting year at Trinity and continue to develop into young men and women of excellent character.

With best wishes for the year ahead,

Gwyneth Evans, Principal

Warmest greetings from Bede Academy. What a year! The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, the London Olympics… As well as joining in these celebrations, Bede Academy has also completed another most encouraging year, celebrating the many achievements of our students.

Kirsty and Zoe Green found out this summer that they had achieved virtually the same grades in History, English and Religious Studies to guarantee their places at Cambridge.

Two years ago the blonde twins obtained very similar results in their 22 GCSEs. Now they each have A*s in English, As in Religious Studies and an A* for Zoe and an A for Kirsty in History.

The twins’ success is among a string of top grade stories from Trinity Academy, which opened of course as recently as 2005.

Overall the pass rate was 98.2 per cent with 71.6 per cent being A*-C, an increase of 1.3 per cent on last year’s top grades.

Success came across many subject areas, with Business, Art, English, History, Italian, Law, Mathematics, Physics, Photography, Psychology and Sociology all celebrating students achieving A* grades.

Principal Ian Brew said: “Today we are celebrating another outstanding set of results with our students who have worked tremendously hard to achieve this success. This group of students is the first to have spent their entire secondary education at Trinity so we are especially pleased that they have done so well.”

Mr Brew added: “We must make special mention of Kirsty and Zoe, who have made history in becoming Trinity Academy’s first Oxbridge students. For one to do so well would have been fantastic; to have them both achieving almost identical grades is exceptional. Both sisters have combined talent and dedication to their studies with being outstanding ambassadors for Trinity Academy, giving their time to others in many ways. We will miss them but wish them well for the future.”

The success of the Green twins and others is a huge advance on seven years ago when only 11 students had the confidence to apply for university. This year, 78 of the 96 in Year 13 applied and gained offers for university.

Mr Brew said the academy had been pleased to welcome students from other schools into Trinity’s 300-strong sixth form. “They settled in well and have loved it here. I am pleased to say their decision to join us has paid off as many have achieved top results this year.”

Identical twin sisters who took the same A levels have become the first students from Thorne to secure places at Cambridge University in more than 30 years.

Prize Giving provided a showcase of dance, singing and sporting talent with an Olympic theme.

We were delighted to welcome Alice Madden as our guest speaker. Alice has represented England Under 18s at Hockey and as well as present the awards she was able to share her experiences of sport with students and their parents.

In each sport and for each year group awards were presented to the Players’ Player and Trinity Player. The Players’ Player is someone who is recognised by staff and their peers as being particularly talented at the sport. The Trinity Player is someone whom staff want to recognise as being fully committed to their sport and their team mates. In

each sport an overall trophy was presented to acknowledge the student who had made the biggest contribution to that particular sport this past year.

The evening was excellent. PE staff spoke passionately about each particular sport. All teams’ achievements were celebrated as all make a contribution to a vibrant extra-curricular programme. The awards were well received and something to treasure and hopefully inspire.

Josh has always wanted to become a doctor, specialising in neurology perhaps, or haematology or immunology or tropical medicine: he does not have to make a final decision until he has been at medical school for a while. However, not realising quite how competitive it is to be accepted to read Medicine straight after school, Josh did not get onto a medics course at that point due to lack of work

experience: if you want to read Medicine at university you need as many placements, observations and work shadowing in a variety of medical environments as you can get.

So, instead of Medicine, Josh read Biomedical Sciences at Durham University. Including a placement year at the Northallerton Friarage Hospital this took him from 2008

to 2012. For his final year project he undertook a dissertation, a very long essay, in neuroscience, specifically The Potential Therapeutics for Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (“Mad Cow” disease as it affects humans).

The work in the placement year was mainly in the labs where patients’ blood, urine, faeces and sputum samples get sent for analysis to aid their medical diagnoses.

Josh achieved a 1st Class Honours (BSc Hons) in Biomedical Sciences this year. He now hopes for graduate entry into Medicine at Newcastle University. This will take another four years of study, enabling him to be a junior doctor in 2016. A lot of study, but, Josh tells us, it will be worth it!

If you are at the academy now where might you be in five or ten years from now?

Josh Taylor gained grades AABB at Trinity in his four A Levels of Biology, Maths, Chemistry and Physics.

Watch out for further editions of Where are they now? in future year books.

Where Are They Now?

Josh achieved a 1st Class Honours (BSc Hons) in Biomedical Sciences this year. He now hopes for graduate entry into Medicine at Newcastle University.

Joe Potter (12Foster)Big Brother

Joe Potter read 1984 by George Orwell and decided to illustrate key elements and scenes. This shot reminds us all we are being watched!

Alice Porter (13Thorpe) Monsters

Alice Porter investigated the crimes committed by Fred and Rose West, producing this monstrous portrait made from merging both of their faces. Words, dates and names were then stitched into the face and pins put through the lips to represent their silence.

William Lindsay spent time studying his friends performing stunts, and captured some great action shots.

Liam Ridgill (13Laycock) Constructed Landscape

Liam Ridgill was interested in the landmarks of the local area and how they could all be represented in one image. Here he has brought them all together, using Trinity as the focus.

Kaitlinn McDermott cast many vessels and containers in concrete to record their volume and form. These unusual stone sculptures turned negative space into something more physical, and were then photographed as a still life.

Rachel Morrison used her own phobia of letting go of balloons to help her convey her fears and aspirations about leaving home to go to university. The balloons were used in several situations, exploring the emotions of her family and friends.

Megan Radley used written descriptions of the lives of the proles in George Orwell’s 1984 to inspire this image of household chores.

TECHNOLOGY 2012 THE ACADEMIC YEAR

Connor Swift (11Fillingham)GCSE Major Project

Nathan Creaser (11McArthur)Year 11 GCSE Project

This stationery storage box utilises hard- and softwoods to create a well made artefact that combines some high level skills in the field of turning timber. The trellised columns are especially difficult to make, employing an exceptional appreciation of the wood turner’s skill. Modern CAD CAM processes were also used in the manufacture of the elliptical mirror.

With reference to the AQA focus on “Storage”, Nathan designed and manufactured this combined wine rack, DVD- and cubby box. The product shows a number of positive responses in terms of practicality and aesthetics.

Cory Johnson (11Woolley) Year 11 GCSE Major Project

The kitchen chopping board, knife store and spice rack is manufactured from softwood. The unit is very well designed and manufactured to a high standard, being created using both free hand traditional skills and the use of CAD CAM (computer aided design and manufacture).

Jay Hannan (13Harries) Year 13 Major Project

This project makes use of high level shaping and forming techniques in the creation of a high chair, aping the style of Philippe Starck. The chair is very well made and utilises a variety of traditional and contemporary processes. It is manufactured from 40% reclaimed materials. Jay has gone on to study Technology at degree level in Newcastle.

Page 35: YEARBOOK 2011 - 2012...1 2011 - 2012 Annual Yearbook 2011-12 CONTENTS Message from the Principal 2 The Emmanuel Schools Foundation 5 The Academic Year 11 Autumn Term 2011 43 Spring

33

Kelly-Marie Cairns (13Potts) Year 13 Major Project

Kelly’s design for a traditional low chair is inspired from the work of the Scottish designer John Rennie Mackintosh. The chair makes use of a number of hard- and softwoods and manufactured boards. Each component is manufactured to bespoke standards with every part being hand made and custom assembled. The chair is made of contrasting reclaimed dark woods (iroko) and light wood (pine) to create the Mackintosh look. It is extremely well made and gained top marks from the external assessor.

Metal Work Cluster

This group of “ironware” artefacts are essentially three dimensional pieces of art, created using at least five pre-set techniques when working metal. The pieces have no functional purpose and were designed to display a student’s abstract design capabilities. The skills evident include turning, milling, forging, brazing, knurling, threading (using a tap and die) and cellulose spray painting and lacquering.

TECHNOLOGY 2012 THE ACADEMIC YEAR

Emma Atkinson (13Harries) Year 13 GCE Minor Project

The foldaway clock and photograph holder uses reclaimed oak and sapele hardwoods from old floor boards and well used science table tops (from Thorne Grammar School). The artefact uses traditional methods of marquetry and inlaying to create the geometric patterns evident in the final design. The clock is a simple yet effective piece of design work.

Robert Raper (12Prior)Year 12 Minor Project

Robert’s clock makes use of a workshop “G” clamp as its design inspiration. The product was a response to the design of a clock that follows a non traditional look. Made in just seven school weeks (about 20 hours) the timepiece is a pleasing but different design of the humble free-standing clock.

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS THE ACADEMIC YEAR

• Trinity hosted Artist in Residence Mandy Keating this year. Under her teaching the students made whirlwind scrolls which where scrolled books with decorated pages. Students then made a tube holder to encase their scrolls using fabric, batik and dyeing processes. These can all still be viewed in room 15 at the Academy. Students involved were: Caitlin Houlbrook (8Crane), Clarissa Smith (8Beaman), Abbie Croucher (8Winkley), Natalie Clarkson (8Kennedy), Connor Stennett (8Garbutt), Bethan Cotterill (8Clarke), Maria Edgley (8Kennedy), Chloe Allen (8Linley), Victoria Roe (8Clarke), James Bull (8Winkley), Olivia Hamilton (8Crane) and Georgia McCay (8Winkley).

• Year 10 students Dominic Cleland (10Dixey), Luke Cockburn (10Taylor), Emily Hodgson (10McNally), Shannon Holland (10Thomson), James Quean (10Piercey), Elliot Redmile (10Grace) attended the annual sports science day at Loughborough University in June. This gave them the chance to see the most prestigious sports university in the country where they were able to take part in fitness exercises, watch lectures and see élite athletes training.

• The academic performance of our G&T cohort continues to be very strong, particularly with Trinity’s strong commitment to delivering academic GCSEs and A Levels. The most impressive statistic this year is that 94.7% of the G&T cohort achieved three or more A*/A grades. This is an 11% improvement on last year. The other benchmark figures of 5A* - C including English and Mathematics and the English Baccalaureate also continue to be impressive, the latter showing an increase of 2.2% over last year despite the national controversy over the raising of English grade boundaries.

• Phoeby Finch (9Beaman) continues to excel in swimming and has moved into the national squad for her age group. She has a heavy training schedule in Sheffield and is moving towards winning national events as an individual. Her eventual aim at the end of her current four year cycle is to reach the senior élite at which point she can compete in all competitions, from the British Championships all the way to the Olympics.

Trinity’s gifted and talented students continue to excel in a whole range of areas and participate in various enrichment activities. A selection of these is given below plus a few pen portraits of three of our most talented sporting students.

Gifted and Talented 2011/2012

Page 37: YEARBOOK 2011 - 2012...1 2011 - 2012 Annual Yearbook 2011-12 CONTENTS Message from the Principal 2 The Emmanuel Schools Foundation 5 The Academic Year 11 Autumn Term 2011 43 Spring

OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENTS THE ACADEMIC YEAR

• Yasmin Mosby (9Beaman) is one of the school’s greatest all round talents. Here is a brief summary:

Basketball – played for Yorkshire U12

Football – Sheffield United Girls Centre of Excellence.

Athletics – Doncaster Athletics

Rounders – about to take trials for England

In addition to this she is an excellent swimmer and dancer

Her only dilemma now is in which one of these sports she chooses to specialise.

• Jarvis Parkinson (10Miles) competed once again at the National Swimming Championships, winning the 200m and 400m individual medley races, coming second in the 100m and 200m freestyle and third in the 100m breast stroke. He will compete next year in the British Championships at open age level in the actual Olympic pool in London. This is also a televised event. Jarvis has to balance his school work with eight training sessions a week so he is a very busy man!

• Jacob Porter (13Hall), Trinity’s speed skater, competed in Germany, The Netherlands and Sweden last season, gaining personal best in every distance at every competition. He has had a busy “off-season” working on strength and stamina exercises and is fit and ready for racing which starts this month. He went to Italy in October and is now only three seconds off qualifying for the Junior GB squad.

• Ex-Trinity students Harry and Ben Middleton continue their development at their respective football clubs Doncaster Rovers and York City. Harry has played for Doncaster’s junior U19 team on a pre season tour of Sweden and has also been on the substitutes’ bench for the first team in the Johnston Paints Cup. Ben played for York’s first team in a pre season friendly against Championship side Hull City.

• Emily Liddle (11Claringbold), now in Year 11, has reduced her acting commitments for the time being so she can concentrate on her GCSEs. However, despite this, she has still had time to appear as Eponine in a Sheffield Library Theatre production of Les Misérables. She is also soon to perform in a production of The Tempest at the Don Valley Festival. And she has managed to find the time to achieve a Distinction in her latest LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) exams. She is a busy lady indeed and is now considering her post 16 options in order to further her acting career. Options include such prestigious establishments as RADA.

The audience was seated on three sides of the stage, which was transformed into a beach for the ninety minutes performance of the black tragedy. Lord of the Flies details the exploits of children who are being evacuated in the war and whose plane crashes on a desert island. Half of the survivors turn savage, hunting down their peers who are striving to construct a civilisation.

Rehearsals started in September 2011 for the play, which involved students in Years 12 and 13. The

performance also proved to be a useful study aid for Year 9 students, who were then reading the book.

Jacob Smith (12Hall) who played the starring role of Piggy, said: “It was a very intense piece, requiring much more energy than most performances. That made it possibly even more rewarding than any other play that I have been in.”

Producer Mrs Taylor added: “The performances were brilliant and everyone who came out thought it was fantastic. The students really got into their respective roles and the performance was a classic, made especially immediate with our thrust stage.”

Students had audiences buzzing with their powerful rendition of a classic tale. Packed houses enjoyed a chilling interpretation of the William Golding novel Lord of the Flies during a three night run at Trinity Academy.

Nobody’s Child: Shoebox Appeal 2011

Organisers Timothy Watkins (11Chappell) and Alexander Hibbard (11McArthur), both 16, were determined that the recession would not impact on their efforts as they collected for the international relief charity Samaritan’s Purse.

“Even though the recession in the west is getting deeper, people are still giving and we have managed to collect more than ever before,” said Alex.

“It takes a lot of organisation but it’s well worth the effort and something we all really enjoy. Things might seem more difficult to us but these donations go to children who literally have nothing.”

Shoeboxes themselves are difficult to come by nowadays and the academy was helped by local firm Boxes and Package, of Doncaster.

Vice Principal Mr Bunce said: “In

this area people’s generosity knows no bounds. These are tough and uncertain times for us all, yet the ability to give never fails to amaze me. “I have nothing but praise for the students who organised this and all those who generously donated toys, books, pens, sports kit and toiletries.”

Operation Christmas Child is organised annually by the Christian relief organisation providing fun and practical gifts for young people in Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Last year Samaritan’s Purse collected more than 1.2 million shoeboxes with gifts and goodies donated by people in the UK.

Students turned on the charitable charm to beat the recession, collecting more donations than ever despite difficult economic times. Scores of shoeboxes packed with gifts flew off to children around the world thanks to the hard work and tenacity of students at Trinity Academy.

Young female footballers did their area proud after taking the name of Doncaster Rovers into the regional top three of a national cup competition. The Trinity Academy students were runners-up in the area final of the nPower Football League U13 Girls Cup, beating girls’ teams representing Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday, Chesterfield and Leicester City to secure a place in the South Yorkshire and East Midlands area finals.

They lost 2-3 to Notts County in a testing semi-final but then took third place after beating Leicester City 3-0 for a second time in the runners-up play-off. The girls scored 16 goals in total with top scorer Lauren Breen (8Kennedy) also taking the title in the speed free kick competition with a kick of 42mph.

Head of girls’ PE at Trinity, Miss Rhodes, said: “To come third overall for our area is a fantastic achievement given how many games had been played leading up to the final performance.”

Liam Scully, Head of Community at Doncaster Rovers, pointing out that the girls beat close to 600 school sides to be in third place overall, said it was the best performance for Doncaster Rovers in the history of the tournament.

AUTUMN TERM 2011 GIRLS FOOTBALL NEWS

First the players took us for a warm up. There were circuits ranging from high knees over speed hurdles to sprinting; from shuffles in and out of speed agility ladders to jogging.

After the intense warm-up, all of the students participated in a passing exercise. There were five in a team and set out was a square where four of them stood. The extra player stood behind the player with the ball. You had to pass the ball to your team mate and then follow your pass while the player on the ball passed it out. Then they knocked it up a level by telling us to change direction to keep our focus.

We then got into a game which was about ten a side on the tiniest pitch ever, so we could hardly move. The teams were boys against girls. Within the first ten minutes the boys gained a 1 - 0 lead, James Gill (7Kendrick) scoring their goal. The girls fought for the victory goal but couldn’t even get the equalizer. Katie Clarke had two one on one attempts against their keeper but unfortunately missed one and hit the post with the other. At full-time the score remained 1 - 0 and therefore the boys won.

On Tuesday 22nd November 2011 Years 7 and 8 took part in Doncaster Schools Girls Football Tournament at the Keepmoat Stadium. Team A won their first game against Rossington 7 - 0, then went on to win against Balby Carr with a score of 3 - 0. Then A beat the next two teams 9 - 0 and 6 - 0. By winning all of their group games, team A were at the top of their group and into the quarters.

With our heads held high after four victories, we gained yet another win of 5 - 0 in the quarter finals. We were then into the semis and yet to be beaten. There was another tough challenge against Hungerhill, but at the end we had a 5 - 0 win. We then sailed through to the final, which we won yet again! The result of the final was 3 - 0. This meant that we won the tournament and received a winner’s emblem and the chance to play against other counties and cities across the country.

Unbeaten without conceding a single goal! Of the 38 goals, 16 came from Lauren Breen (8Kennedy), 13 from Yasmin Mosby (8Beaman), 7 from Jasmine Blunt (7Caughey), 1 from Yasmin Collins (8Winkley) and 1 from Katie Stead (8Winkley). Katie Clark (8Linley) was the only person who didn’t score... but she was the goalkeeper! Yasmin Mosby (8Beaman)

On Tuesday 15th November 2011, two England players (Sophie Bradley, captain, ladies football and Casey Stoney) kindly came into our school to take a football training session.

Many students stayed in the local area, but some went further afield to places like Nottingham, Stoke and even London. Placements were varied and included local businesses such as the Punchbowl, Bullseye Motor Factors and Thorne Motor Company, plus many national and international names such as Paul Smith, Corus and Wm Morrisons.

The week saw students take on a variety of roles including mechanics, teaching assistants, builders, plumbers, engineers, chefs and legal assistants. Three students even worked on the Vulcan To The Sky project at Finningley airport.

The feedback from employers has been extremely positive and many were sad to see their new employees leave at the end of the week. So much so that some students have been offered part-time jobs and others have been asked to return after Year 11 to discuss apprenticeship opportunities!

What a great result – well done Year 10!

A snowy week in February saw the start of work experience for our Year 10 students. After months of preparation, all students left their school uniforms at home for a week and donned their various work uniforms. From suits to aprons, overalls to tracksuits, the Year 10 students set out to discover the world of work.

2012 saw Trinity Academy’s seventh whole school production, Big: The Musical. The cast of around seventy students and a ten-strong backstage crew contributed to the largest company yet in the history of our productions.

SCHOOL PRODUCTION

Seventy English Literature students from Years 10 - 13 enjoyed a night out at the theatre at the end of April to see the acclaimed West End production of An Inspector Calls, staged at the Sheffield Lyceum as part of a national tour.

J. B. Priestley’s classic play was being studied by GCSE students as part of their English Literature course. Becky Eastwood (11Horsfield) commented: “It was brilliant – I really enjoyed it.” Matthew Robinson (11 Woolley) added: “Very beneficial. A fantastic production!”

English teacher Mrs Backhouse says “This was a great night out, and one of the biggest departmental extracurricular trips for some time. Seeing the text being brought to life in such an inventive and modern way makes such a difference. All the staff were also very proud of our students, whose behaviour and conduct were excellent throughout.”

shop, students worked tirelessly to re-create the story of 13 years old Josh (played by Joshua Reed, 7Demaude) and his wish to become older. Josh makes a wish at a fairground attraction called Zoltar (Darcy Morris 8Garbutt) and before he knows it he is catapulted into an adult body. But now he has to work for a living, find somewhere to live and even talk to girls, such as Susan (Toni Goulden 13Ramsden)!

Josh’s adventures as an adult (Peter Bird 13Thorpe) eventually lead him to realise that being a kid was great and he can’t wait to get back to it. With the help of his side-kick and best buddy, Billy (Bailey Wilson 8Harrison), Josh manages to return to the fairground and be thirteen again.

Gold RushThe evening of Wednesday, February 15th was very special for six ex-Trinity students, who were entitled to be presented with their gold Duke of Edinburgh Award at a special ceremony at the Mansion House in Doncaster.

Tony Barwell, Hannah Fawcett, Edoardo Gerosa, Emily Harbottle, Jaimie Hill and Anna Priestley were all able to collect their D of E Gold badges or brooches.

This was the first part of a two-stage process: five of the group will be presented with their winner’s certificates at St James’ Palace in the spring of 2013, while Anna Priestley has already been to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh for her certificate.

For the second year in a row, Trinity Academy headed the list of Gold Award winners, with six of the eleven Doncaster winners of the award coming from here. This is the kind of record we would like to keep up!

SPRING TERM 2012 THE KING’S ACADEMY SHORT STORY AWARD WINNER 2012

“Mark, is that you?” said the voice on one end of the line.

“Yeah, it’s me”. He took a quick glance around before pressing the receiver closer to his lips. “Listen, I think I found what we’re looking for. I can’t talk too much on the phone, but I think it might be all that we need. Anyway” (he couldn’t hide the excitement in his voice any longer). “meet me at my apartment in one hour, and I’ll show you everything...” His voice trailed off as he took a final glance rearwards before slanting down his head, trying to blend in with the masses around him, and disappearing into the monotony of reality.

“Excuse me. Hey, sir?” Jonah stretched his fingers across the top of the coaster in front of him, and threw it at the bartender’s right shoulder. “Excuse me”, he repeated, drifting into mumbles. In a bid to gain his attention, he picked up a wholly empty bottle of Stella and threw it at the array of glasses hung on the ceiling, smashing several in a spectacular rain of shards, the action culminating in a deafening clatter as gravity took its hold on the remaining few. “I said, sir, excuse me.”

“I don’t know what you mean. Sure, they came through.” The bartender lifted up his hat and took a quick glance out of the window. “But I don’t know where they went after that”. He dabbed at the slash above his eye, and then took a long stare at the revolver on the table between them, basking in its chrome magnificence. That was before Jonah picked it up, slid two slender rounds into it and fired them one after the other.

Sergeant Styles didn’t enjoy his job as much as he used to, not now that paperwork and normalities had taken

precedence over catching villains and “serving the people”. Only certain cases stood out in the humdrum series of events that had been the previous year. And the bartender’s murder was one of them. At first, every sign pointed to that of a drunken brawl: smashed glassware, spilt lager and a sleazy, downtown watering hole. But it wouldn’t take a member of Mensa to figure that most drunken brawls don’t end up with one participant wearing the two bullet holes from a silenced pistol. And most don’t end up meeting their maker five miles from the scene of the fights. It took a sharp realisation to wake Styles from his deep, illucid dream; there were only five watering holes in Northport, at least if you only included the ones in the town centre. Being a small town, these were spread out and largely insignificant. But this item of knowledge became more significant when coupled with the fact that, including Mr Bartender, there had been four murders in the previous month (which, naturally, the media had seen as unrelated). One for every public house. The evidence stacked up even more when the victims were examined under the more scrutinising eye of research: Leo Fields, known patron of the Red Ship, Harry Walding, manager of the King’s Pint, Steven Lewis, cleaner at the End’s End, Gordon Barker, owner of the Blue Flag. And then finally our friend Dev: Bartender at Larry’s. It still left one question unanswered, however. Why? Well, that wouldn’t be too hard to find out when the culprit was behind bars.

“Guy, you hearing me?” Mark threw over his coat and stepped out into the garage, clicking the car’s key fob. “Change of plan... meet at the Queen’s Inn in ten minutes... I’m as fed up as you... yeah, I know, ... just be there.”

It was times like these that Jonah wondered what his entire, murder filled life had amounted to. A few

pounds? No. Love? Hate? Loyalty? Betrayal? But, then he always reminded himself that he had done it all himself. He’d find them, both of them. He’d secured a loyal customer in the form of his client. And he’d get the satisfaction of seeing their two squirming faces as he put a bullet in them. Both of them....

“These documents tell us everything we need to know. They tell us about Cuba, Kingston and Moscow. They mention the involvement of Interpol, MI5 and the CIA They tell us where he made contact with Jericho and how it says Jericho was the codename for his associate and close friend, Louis Defranco, a.k.a., the CEO at ExeCorp. Ltd, and how he plans to get rid of him. It’s great, and it’s ours.....” He was stopped dead in his tracks as he met the icy glare off Guy. “Wait, the government...?” He lowered his head to the table and downed the last few millilitres of gin left at the bottom of his glass. “I’m sorry, I can’t do this anymore. It’s out of our hands. Don’t you see? We can’t do this anymore!”

Bang. The shot must have come from the other side of the roundel that was the bar, because that was where the smoke was most concentrated. It didn’t matter, though. Blood, dark and crimson in colour, was trickling down his arm. Mark didn’t know what to do, so in a last ditch attempt to escape, the shooter made a mad dash to the side of the bar. “You know”, spoke the shooter in a calm chant-like tone. “You probably know more about the whole ordeal than I do. I’m just a lackey, paid to do what I do. But you people are different. And I, speaking on behalf of bossman, don’t like it.” Bang.

Some, including Robin Coe (10 Taylor), Amy Woodroffe (12 Goddard) and Emily Liddle (10 Claringbold), were brave enough to sing solos and Logan Wrigley (8 Linley) took to the mic to show off his beat boxing skills.

There were also some great performances from The Mondays rock band and Trinity Singers, whilst the Wind Band performed a beautiful rendition of Titanic. A huge “well done” goes to the Year 10 BTEC Music class, who planned the event and ensured it all ran smoothly on the night, raising more than £143 for the academy’s charity fund. Well done to all involved on a superb evening of entertainment. Join us next year for more or get involved!

Taking the jubilee as a theme, students in Years 7-10 designed hats, fascinators, outfits, flags, stamps and collages.

Head of Art Miss Howlett said: “The students really entered into the spirit of the jubilee celebrations and turned out some excellent work in a very short period of time. All of the work would grace any street party.”

The winners were Ellie Knott (7Caughey) with her dress design, Ellie McCreadie (8Clarke) with her union collage and Layla Pyatt (10Claringbold) with her union flag.

Layla said: “I was really pleased to win as I spent ages on my design. I would love to take my art further but also enjoy drama.”

Similar competitions were staged by the History Department and the English Department, which ran a poetry competition.

Students made an art of celebrating their Queen as the nation united for the Diamond Jubilee. Hundreds of students of art, textiles and photography took part in a regal art competition to mark the landmark of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth’s 60 years on the throne.

The phrase “thrown in at the deep end” comes to mind, but I would not have wanted it any other way; the friendship built because we were thrown together and expected to do such challenging work will surely last longer because of it. We all want to go out there again. Whilst we may have benefitted the lives of the people we worked with in some small way, they had a far greater impact upon us.

Jacob Smith (12Hall)

At Siphomandla home-based care is provided so that children can take part in the Youth Programme. First we were introduced to all the carers and we danced and sang with everyone to introduce ourselves which was an amazing experience! Then we played games with all the children, after we had done the de-worming whilst the kids ate lunch. It was really nice seeing all the children share food with each other even though they didn’t have a lot. The highlight of the day was when some girls, Joyful, Happiness and others taught us how to dance.

Charlotte Best (12Hall)

We began with a meeting at Hands at Work. A lady called Fortunate told us the story of her vulnerability as a child and was so brave to say it in front of us all… George, the founder, spoke of how he fulfilled the needs of Alfred, a boy with AIDS who just wanted a friend.

Later we went to Siphomandla where we worked with the children, who were all so happy and appreciative. They just seemed to want to be shown any kind of affection. The following day we had a more formal meeting with the carers. They sang together and it was beautiful and free. They also danced and it was such an expression of emotion and brought everyone so close together.”

Amy Woodroffe (12Goddard)

The trip to South Africa was truly amazing: not only was it great to be able to work with and benefit the lives of disadvantaged men, women and children but also the trip was made truly unique by the opportunity to work and live so closely with complete strangers.

Into Africa

We went to a shopping mall in Johannesburg and it was lovely! So clean and posh! When we left we got stuck in traffic at lights and beggars kept coming to the doors of the vans and asking for money; it was really hard to ignore them! It was shocking to see that a city like Johannesburg could look so pretty and wealthy yet there are still lots or poor people in the street begging.

At Belfast (not Northern Ireland!), some of us helped cook the sweet potato and mix the maize, which was really hard to do. (Women from Belfast have serious muscles). Some little kids came in; we taught them “Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes” and they helped us water the plants.

On our second day in Belfast, our group was given the task of collecting manure… it wasn’t as bad as I expected. Others helped to build a fence around the vegetable patch.

John Hardy (12Howlett)

We visited an old man who found it hard to move and was looking after children who were not even his own. I sang the first verse of Amazing Grace to him and then we prayed for him and the others. We then visited a young girl and an old woman. It was difficult but a huge reality shock of how hard it is for some people to just live.

I must admit, 4:30 am is a disgusting time to get up but worth it for Kruger Park. We saw: buffalo, rhino, lions, hippo, elephants, giraffes, hyenas, cheetahs, turtles, antelopes, zebras, crocodiles, monkeys and lots of birds.

Amy Woodroffe (12Goddard)

Wednesday 18th July: Kruger

We helped move lots and lots and lots of bricks! It was very tiring, but it was in the sun so that was good. It was hard but rewarding because we had helped someone who needed it. I felt like we were doing something that mattered.

After getting back to Petra College I found a monkey had trashed my room because Sam had left the window open.

We went for a meal out at Gumtreez. I am not very keen on fish but I decided to try callamari (squid) and it was gorgeous - rubbery but really nice. Quite proud of myself!

The quintet were among a crew of forty from the Emmanuel Schools Foundation with fellow students from their sister schools, The King’s Academy, Middlesbrough, Bede Academy, Blyth, and Emmanuel College, Gateshead.

The annual venture aims to support students’ personal development through being a crew member and playing an active part

of life aboard the ship, which is operated by the Tall Ships Youth Trust.

Vice Principal of The King’s Academy Gary Wiecek, said: “I’ve organised this event for the last couple of years and despite never having gone onboard myself, due to terrible sea sickness, the students absolutely love it. Because the weather has been so unpredictable this year we were unsure exactly where the ship would go. Once past the mouth of the Tyne it could have travelled to Scotland, London or even Holland and back. This trip is a life-changing experience. A tall ship voyage takes people out of their comfort zone and they soon find things within themselves that they did not realise were there.”

The students lived in cabins on board ship, taking part in every

aspect of sailing including helming, scaling the forty metre masts to set and stow sails, navigating and scrubbing the decks.

They were also expected to take part in one of three watches and get up for night duties at 4am.

Trinity Academy science teacher Miss Rookley said: “Adventures like this build leadership qualities and self confidence in young people. Some of the students on board weren’t the most self assured of young people but by working together as a team and facing and conquering their fears they gain a lot more self confidence.”

Before setting off, student Craig Venables (9Miles), 14, added: “This trip is going to be amazing. It’s my first time on a tall ship and I can’t wait to get going.”

Young adventurers spliced the main brace for a voyage of discovery on the high seas. An intrepid crew of five students from Year 9 at Trinity Academy climbed aboard the 60m Stavros S Niarchos tall ship, on the banks of the River Tyne, in preparation for a ten-night sea going adventure.

Organised by Miss Hadwin, the two hour extravaganza entertained a packed audience of all ages. Dance groups included students from Trinity Academy, the Green Top Cheerleaders, Bodyrockers, Dance Central Studio, Footloose, Fantasy Dance Academy, the Cheryl Jones Dance School, the Claire Anderson School of Dancing, the Green Top

Street Dancers and Fifty/50.

Trinity Academy principal Ian Brew said: “Dance is a wonderful thing. When you dance you feel joy and freedom. This event takes an awful lot of hard work to set up and it just gets bigger and bigger and better and better.”

Miss Hadwin added: “All the dancers have worked extremely hard to reach this point and their routines were absolutely amazing before an audience which was incredibly appreciative. Dance is astonishingly good for you. It keeps you very fit and supple but is also good for your mind, for self-esteem and discipline. ”

The event raised £400 for the academy’s chosen charities of Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Cancer Research and Action Cambodia.

Dancers rocked, pirouetted and high kicked their way to rapturous applause as a glittering spectacular came to Trinity Academy, as it played host to a celebration of dance featuring the talents of the region’s young artistes. Scores of dancers showcased moves and routines they had been practising for months.

Principal Ian Brew gave an overview of some of the arts highlights of the year including productions of Lord of the Flies and Big, and the academy being the host of recent events, Celebration of Dance and Doncaster Rotary Club’s Young Chef of the Year competition. Although the academy’s speciality is in business and enterprise, it has also built a strong reputation for the creative arts: in music for example there is a percussion club, a jazz club and rock band The Mondays, whilst young fine artists have had the benefit of three artists in residence this year.

Mr Brew added: “Our departments of art, textiles, music, dance, drama and food technology work incredibly hard every day so that all our young people benefit from the arts and it shows in the very high standards at which our students are performing.”

Students from all year groups were recognised for improvement and achievement in an awards presentation in all these spheres. Following this, the audience was invited to view work by older

students studying A Level Fine Art, Photography and Textiles.

Among them was most outstanding artist in Year 12 Callum Thompson, whose mother is one of the subjects of a piece he painted. “My mum says she’s more beautiful in the piece than she is in real life but I don’t agree,” he said.

Chelsea Holding reinterpreted the work of Maggi Hambling for her cityscapes, while “most creative” Art and Textiles student Alice Porter symbolised slavery in a fabric noose with a book of embroidered diary messages by real slaves.

Jessica Forshaw was aiming for another A grade with her chest of drawers symbolising her childhood and her fabric image of pregnancy and birth.

ARTS EXHIBITION 2012

The spotlight shone on talented students as they took to the stage in a spectacular showcase of the arts. Dance and drama, fashion and fine art, photography, food and music were all on display at the end of term exhibition on Friday, July 13th at Trinity Academy, as around 400 artists and their siblings, parents, grandparents and friends packed the main hall to see: fashion students taking to the catwalk; performances by dance students; drama students acting out scenes from academy plays of the year; and singing from Trinity Singers.

The first afternoon the activities comprised a variety of different group-building activities – tree climbing, blind fold activities, building pipelines, swing bridge and finally the groups all had a bucket of water at the start of the afternoon and this bucket had to remain with them and be included in every activity. Pupils gained water for doing well and lost water for cheating but more importantly than that they seemed to struggle to keep the water in the buckets whilst doing the most simple challenge such as walking, let alone climbing a tree!

The first evening involved what we were told was a gentle walk up a hill to find some treasure at the top. Everyone thought this was a

fantastic idea until the hill which suddenly turned into the biggest mountain in Britain came into sight! The mini bus became very calm and all you could hear was the odd voice saying “That’s massive”, “I can’t do that”, and “What do you think I am?” After the initial moans and groans and having to sit down every ten steps everyone realised “Yes, I can do it”.

The groups all went their different ways to take part in a multitude of activities: gill scrambling, kayaking, archery, abseiling, crate stacking, bush craft and mission impossible.

Gill Scrambling means climbing up a side of a river and returning by journeying actually in the river itself, including jumping five metres

The annual Year 8 trip to Bassenfell Manor in the Lake District during May was eagerly anticipated by the students and never failed to be an exciting and invigorating experience for all who attended.

into plunge pools, leaping between rocks and being thrown about in the currents.

Kayaking seemed to amuse everyone, especially when it involved getting the teacher soaked with water. There was no teacher who went kayaking who left the water dry!

Crate stacking involved pupils working together, one hanging in the air and balancing on milk crates and two of their friends pulling them on a rope. The aim of this game was to build a stack of 25 crates; Jade Bate was the star of this activity, equalling the residential centre record. There seemed to be a lot of shouting going on between teams, as the stacks got higher and higher.

Bush craft was the teachers’ favourite activity, a lovely gentle stroll in the woodlands, stopping every few minutes to collect bark from the trees or wild garlic

whilst learning how to live out in the forest. Once all the goodies had been collected it was time to become one with nature and light the campfire with wood, rope and good old fashioned elbow grease. Once the fires were alight it became a cooking lesson – campfire bread was made with the wild garlic and eaten with lots of cries of delight and “Oh, this is great”.

The final night was declared a production night, each group having to produce and perform a play under the theme of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The acts could not have been more different, ranging from “The Weakest Link” to “Britain’s Got Royalty”. As quoted by Elly McMurdo (8 Harrison) when asked what was her highlight of the week, “The talent show. It was fab and so funny I could hardly breathe with laughter.”

Primary school children were given a taste of Olympic ideals as they prepared to embark on the next chapter of their education. The mini-Olympics were the culmination of a year’s work by the academy and the primary schools, whose children will start at Trinity in September.

Trinity Academy principal Ian Brew told the 160 pupils: “The Olympic values and our values are very similar and it is great that we can spend some time together to get to know each other. All the children were winners because they all did their very best. Like the Olympics, we have come together to enjoy the benefits of sport and the fellowship of competition.”

Schools taking part were West Road, Moorends, Thorne Brooke, Marshland and Thorne Green Top, all competing in the morning in a

range of sports including hockey, cricket, rounders, eight-a-side football, seated volleyball and athletics. In the afternoon teams were mixed, allowing the school children to make new friends.

Thorne Brooke pupil Caitlan Miller, 11, said: “I think it is a really good idea. I have been here before because I play various sports. But for those who have never been it is great to see the facilities and to get to know each other before September.”

West Road teacher Hayley Barrett agreed. “It is really good to get the schools to mix, allowing the pupils to meet each other. It also gives them the chance to get an insight into what life will be like when they come here.”

In June Trinity Academy hosted a sporting extravaganza to be proud of for children in Year 6 at its feeder primary schools. Primary school children were given a taste of Olympic ideals as they prepared to embark on the next chapter of their education.

Trinity Academy’s Paralympics

Neil spoke of how his sport had allowed him to travel the world and make many new friends, both at home and abroad. Neil has seven paralympic medals: one gold, four silvers and two bronzes. Beijing was his last competition as a player, however he is part of the coaching team for the GB Table Tennis squad, including London 2012.

Sport was played throughout the day with students getting the chance to experience Table Tennis, Boccia, Wheelchair Basketball, Athletics and Football.

Those attending were Willow Holmes (7Cooper); Bethany Diffin (7Witty); Carla Taylor (7Clark); Cadie Elliott (7Cooper); Devon-Marie Finley (7Simpson); Whitney Westron (7Backhouse);

Taylor Cairns (8Winkley); Giles Cuttell-Guest (9Havlin); Lauren Stevenson (9Havlin).

Giles Cuttell-Guest has received an invitation to join a local Boccia club and participate in future Boccia competitions within the county.

Lauren Stevenson was talent-spotted for skills in Table Tennis and has also been directed towards a local club.

All the students were an absolute credit to Trinity and behaved with maturity and great consideration for others. We had fun and made lots of new friends and hope to play Football, Boccia and Table Tennis fixtures against All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield at some point next year.

On Thursday, June 14th, nine Trinity pupils attended a South Yorkshire athlete assessment day for SEN students at the English Institute for Sport in Sheffield. The day was opened by Neil Robinson, a table tennis paralympian.

Last year had been a record year. This year would not live up to that in terms of records, cooler and blustery conditions having their impact. Instead the pattern of the day was more closely contested races with some thrilling finishes.

In total seven records were broken. The pick of the races was the Year 8 1500m. Joshua Wilson (9Clarke) and Luke Pike (8Norton) matched each other stride for stride in the first 1450m and only in the last 50m did Luke Pike get his nose in front and hold off Joshua Wilson’s best efforts. What makes this an even

bigger achievement is that age-wise Luke is in Year 7.

Abbie Dixon (10McNally) completed the full house in the Year 10 Girls Shot Putt. Expectations were high for Abbie as she already held the Year 8 and Year 9 Shot Putt records. Going into the final round of throws she had some distance to make up for the record. Abbie took herself off to psyche herself up and returned focussed and determined. Unbelievably, she threw the shot 9.46m, an improvement of 46cm on the previous record.

As ever there was a buzz of excitement around the Academy as Sports Day approached. The culmination of the House sporting calendar always provides a fitting end to the year. 2012 was not to disappoint.

Records that were broken on the day were as follows:

SPORTS DAY SUMMER TERM 2012

Much excitement centred around the Year 10 Boys High Jump. Brandon Wilmot (10Taylor) had already beaten his competitors, but the bar continued to rise higher and higher. It reached a point where it was above the head of Miss Rhodes, who was officiating the event. Watched by ex-student and now ex-record holder Benjamin Middleton, Brandon managed to clear 1.75m.

Kieran Wood (9Boughey) and Jack Fletcher (10Brown) both wrote their names into the record books again, with Kieran taking the Year 9 Shot

Putt record and Jack adding 3m to the previous best throw in the Year 10 Discus.

Other star performers emerged: Owen Blake (7Caughey) and Francesca Middleton (7Simpson) both won the sprint double; Cameron Jones (10Dixey) also completed this feat; Ellie Bailey (8Kennedy) won all three of the events that she entered.

In amongst all of the winners are the real stars, the team players who compete just to squeeze an extra point for their House. Callum

Brett (8Winkley) and Abbie Dixon (10McNally) both ran distance events when nobody else was willing to step forward. Abbie in particular must have special mention as the 800m and Shot are not a traditional combination of Sports Day events. Her efforts brought Mrs Taylor to tears.

As ever the behaviour and attitude of all students was impeccable and it was another superb Sports Day.

This is our fifth win since the beginning of Trinity Academy but believe me they have not all been easy victories and I am sure this year coming will be no exception.

Team Shepherds never give in and never take anything for granted. I know that we believe in our house and that we all stand for these characteristics. We are competitive, display sportsmanship and have integrity. Throughout the last seven years we have shown courage and determination similar to that of team GB, and as Shepherds House Manager I couldn’t possibly ask for more.

There are far too many Shepherds whom I could name for their outstanding 2011-12 performances. These are not just

in sport, but for gaining numerous merits, being outstanding photographers, quiz masters, mathematicians... the list is endless. Well done to every single Shepherd who played a part in our 2011-12 championship!

I would like to say a very big “Thank you” to our out-going House Captains, Carloandrea Gerosa and Ruth Windass. They were inspirational leaders and we

will miss them so much. Theirs are big shoes to fill but I am confident that our new House Captains, Robbie Spence and Holly Jackson, will do so quite nicely.

I would also like to add a huge welcome Mr Martin as our new Head of House, who I have to say has thrown himself whole heartedly into this role. He has been known formerly as the “Man in Black”, so watch out for him: he is a dark horse.

Mrs TaylorShepherds House Manager

Well what can I say? We’ve only gone and done it again! This year has made it extra special with it being the London 2012 Olympics and I can say without a doubt that team Shepherds has made me just as proud as team GB made the nation!

Once More with Feeling

We started the year off well – joint first with Shepherds House for the Cross Country event! The saying goes – if you win the Cross Country you win the House Cup! Well, we Kings thought, “We’re in with a chance – we can win the House Cup again.” So we set off on our quest!

Badminton seems to be our game. We had outstanding performances in all our year groups but in particular Jake Goodburn and Sian Grierson-Randall were a double act you wouldn’t want to cross on court. Tennis was another event where the standard of play between Dale Smith and Haydn Miller as they grand slammed their way to winning for Kings House was like that between Jonathan Marray and Frederik Nielsen. Dance Mats was a new competition for 2012 so we were more than pleased with how popular it was. Year 8’s Megan Simmonite was heard to say “I’m Skegness’s highest Dance Mat scorer” and so she was: incredibly fast and hardly missing a beat. We were hoping for a warm sunny afternoon for our Fishing competition - what we got was rain and more rain, thunder and lightning

and some very wet house managers and fishermen. But Jordan Close managed to land a massive 10lb 10oz fish, the biggest one of the day which helped to lead us to victory. The Swimming Gala was held at Thorne Leisure Centre and proved to be a very close event. We have our very own Phoeby Finch who trains with the City of Sheffield Swim Squad and whose ambition is to swim in the 2016 Olympics, so she was lengths ahead and her performance was outstanding. Caitlan Parkin stood in at the last minute for Darts and beat the boys’ Year 7 and Year 8 teams. Sports Day was again a record breaking day, with outstanding performances from all the houses. So many students stood out, from Year 7s through to Year 10s.

Our House Captains in true tradition led the way in the house assemblies.

Kayleigh Whyte finally got her way when we all dressed in 80s gear and performed as Duran Duran, Adam Ant and other artistes from that era. We had lots of fun, especially when Joseph Phillips dressed as Irene Cara from Flashdance and danced for the whole of Kings House. It was a sad day when our house captains left: Liam Ridgill and Kayleigh Whyte have been phenomenal. Their contribution to the house has been above and beyond the call of duty. We wish them well for the future. So it’s up to Kellie Harrison and Joseph Phillips to lead the way and I’m sure they will grab the challenge with both hands.

Kings House thanks the Poets and Shepherds for the healthy competition and look we forward to the challenge 2012-2013 will bring.

Our House Captains were also ready and raring to go. Keagan and Jess take over as vice-captains whilst Jonny, Sam and Natasha move up to their new roles as House Captains. They are all a credit to Poets and the energy and enthusiasm they bring to the house is amazing.

House assemblies continue to be a highlight of the year. We embarked on a quest to recover the House Cup from the hands of Blackbeard Bunce and Long John Richardson in “Poets of the Caribbean” and dreamt of the future as our house captains got a taste of what it is like to be “Big”. Thank you to all those who participated in our assemblies this year and especially to those who received prizes during the

final assembly. Also an extra special well done to Faith Bisby who was named “Poet of the Year”.

During the year Poets won the Rugby 7s, Hockey, Darts, Short Story and Food and drew with Shepherds in the Bench Ball. We managed to retain second place throughout the year and were snapping at the heels of

the Shepherds. With five events to go and with a lot of luck we could still have snatched the cup. As Prize Giving approached however it was clear that the Shepherds were just too far ahead to be caught.

Although this wasn’t our year I know we can all hold our heads high and I am proud of all you Poets. As we look to next year and a new competition, remember: a winner is not someone who never fails, but one who never quits.

Miss HandleyPoets House Manager

Despite not winning the House Cup the Poets never fail to impress me. September arrives and the volunteers start flooding in from every direction: Joseph Wheatley asks” Can I put my name down for fishing?” “Yes, but it isn’t until July” I reply!

SPORTS REPORTS GIRLS SPORTS REPORTS 2011 - 2012

NetballThe 2011/2012 netball season started off with a bang and regular fixtures have taken place every other week this year. This increases girls’ participation in more than one sport: one week it is a netball match and the next week it is a hockey match, which means that the girls department is not asking students to choose between sports but rather allowing them to compete in both.

The weeks when there is no fixture provide training nights with consistently 30 - 40 girls attending practice. This year we have implemented a policy of “no train no game” to keep the students motivated and attending training sessions.

We were able this year to field teams from Year 7 through to Year 11.

As the results on page 80 show, this season is one of the most successful that Trinity has had.

Unfortunately the senior squads have started to dwindle a little due to players’ commitments to other extra-curricular activities such as revision sessions and the school production. However, on training nights we have still been having 30 girls from all years training, regardless of the weather

conditions. We had very few fixtures cancelled this year, and none from Trinity were due to being unable to field a team.

The teams are all doing very well, success bringing success, and we are still having students who have never played in the past attending training sessions, which is tremendous.

We are now winning more and more matches which is extremely pleasing; it also has a positive impact on training, attendance and willingness to train.

Attendance at Year 7 practices has been positive with consistently more than twenty players showing an interest in representing the school, so that we have been able to field an A and a B team.

The results have not always reflected the effort, enthusiasm and commitment that the girls are demonstrating at the moment. Year 7 has been extremely fortunate this year, having had 14 matches including friendlies and triangular tournaments as well as a Year 7 netball festival at Hayfield School. Only one match was postponed and that was because of the opposing school’s Ofsted inspection.

Total number of possible games: 19 Won 8; Drew 5; Lost 3; Cancelled 3

The Year 8 team has had another fantastic season. They came second in the annual Doncaster Schools Championships and represented Doncaster at the South Yorkshire Championships held at the England Institute of Sport in Sheffield, playing against the best teams in Sheffield, Barnsley and Rotherham. This gave the girls very good experience and an understanding of the standard that they need to aspire to in Year 9 and years to come.

Other highlights include Aimee Glynn’s outstanding performance as GS against Goole High School. Again the attendance of the Year 8 girls at training is pleasing and demonstrates their commitment to extra-curricular life at Trinity.

Total number of possible games: 34 Won 21; Drew 1; Lost 9; Cancelled 3

Year 8The Year 9 team has struggled this season, which is disappointing as this is the team that in the past has shown so much potential. Unfortunately, this term the girls have struggled with their commitment to netball because of competition from other extra curricular activities. The team realises that they need to commit to training so they can achieve more success in the future years.

Total number of possible games: 12 Won 1; Drew 2; Lost 6; Cancelled 3

Year 9Unfortunately this team has had the least number of matches, because of other schools not being able to field either a Year 10 or a Year 11 team. The girls’ attendance to training sessions on a Monday evening has been erratic, however it did improve over the season.

Thorne Netball Club has been in contact with the school and is starting to train at Trinity. Links are being developed between Trinity and the club which will hopefully develop the girls’ interest even further as they will be able to see where they can progress to once they have finished school.

This team has been traditionally one of our strongest teams and hopefully the players will be able to regain their crown next year.

For the second year running now the numbers attending training have risen again. It has also been nice to see some new faces coming and acquiring places in the squads. We started training pretty early this year and this has certainly paid off; we seem to be winning more matches across all years which is having a positive impact on training and students’ attendance and willingness to train.

We need to continue to practice and play regularly; hopefully then next years rounders season will be as successful as this.

Winners never quit and quitters never win.

The best inspiration is not to outdo others, but to outdo ourselves.

Firstly, congratulations to all of the squads and staff for their dedication and support this season: it has been brilliant. I am pleased to say that for us the weather has not affected play and no fixtures have been cancelled this season.

Year 7 Year 8

Attendance at Year 7 practice has been hugely positive with a large number of players showing an interest in representing the school.

Unfortunately, at the start of the season the results reflected their inexperience but the girls have shown a great deal of improvement and this has reflected in their recent fixtures. They need to learn the tactics and remain calm during play; we hope to see them all next season.

Year 7This team has a great deal of potential, many members from last years Year 7 squad continuing to train and represent Trinity which is very pleasing. Some new faces have appeared this year, strengthening the squad. Mrs. McMurdo’s reports of Elly/’s blow for blow accounts of the matches demonstrate the positive experiences gained by the players.

There are many talented key players in this squad with the potential to win the Doncaster schools competition. They have had a very successful season, with 4 wins and 3 losses, the losses being by a very narrow margin of 1 rounder. The most impressive win was against Hill House.

They are a very talented and enthusiastic bunch with the biggest attendance to training across the years and the largest squad which has allowed them to play up and represent the Year 10 team. They have held their own.

They have had some great wins and some great defeats where they never gave up. Most of the games played were very close and very nail biting, especially at the Year 9 tournament. They need to have more confidence in their ability and not be so hesitant and maybe next year they will get a full meal from KFC rather than just a mini fillet after the tournament. Keep it up girls…

Year 9A special group of young ladies with lots of talent and dedication, the majority of this squad have attended training weekly and played in all fixtures. Their enthusiasm for playing rounders is second to none, and this has rubbed off onto the Y9s, with whom they have developed a good relationship. They are undoubtedly one of the strongest and most skilful squads in Doncaster, their three defeats having been by only ½ a rounder. How important the ½s are! The Year 7 Hockey team had a tremendous first season, maintaining a clean sheet and winning every game. For the first time Trinity became the Doncaster Schools Tournament Champions. Top goal scorers were Kika-J Oliver (7Simpson) and Francesca Middleton (7Simpson). Special mention for defender Ellie Aldsworth (7Cole) and midfielder Georgia Hookway (7Cole).

Year 7

This squad was a little on the small size and is still in need of more players. Despite low numbers the regular committed players in the squad have ensured a good season with three wins and only one loss. Jade Bate (8Norton) has held the midfield together well and Katie Stead (8Winkley) has been strong in defence. The squad was present for an 11-a-side tournament at the ESF Olympics, the regular hockey players showing great leadership in guiding the full squad in matches. They fought a good battle against tough opposition.

Year 8/9

In this team there is a number of girls that have trained and played since Year 7 and have remained committed to the sport throughout. This includes a number of former Pumas (the combined Emmanuel Foundation team), South Yorkshire squad members Devon Grimes (11Woolley) and Natalie Bate (10Grace), Doncaster Hockey Club players and one girl who has previously made the North England development squad (Natalie Bate).

The senior team has come of age and is now able to beat comfortably oppositions that previously they struggled against, this year being particularly good. Games against Hall Cross and Hayfield had high scores, with wins for Trinity. Some of the younger players in the senior squad became Doncaster School Tournament Champions for Year 10 by beating Hayfield and Hall Cross. A great season for all, but special mention for Abbie Dixon (10McNally) in goal and the upfront duo of Carla Kendell (11Towers) and Paige King (11Chappell).

Despite a season of very poor weather we still managed to get some cricket in.

Many of the Year 7 boys have had very little experience of competitive cricket and it has been great to see their skills and understanding develop. This has been helped by their commitment to training. They have been aided by Louis Jones (8Winkley) and Joshua Yeaman (8Norton) who in particular have had excellent seasons.

We played four matches, winning two and losing two. The best came against Campsmount in the second round of the cup. Batting first we amassed 92 for one wicket. This was largely made up from a fantastic knock of 60 not out by Joshua Yeaman. This would have been good enough to beat most teams; however Campsmount knocked the runs off without losing a wicket and with two balls to spare.

This team will develop next year when hopefully the weather will be a little kinder.

Year 7This was a good season for the team from Years 9 and 10. In a season decimated by poor weather we managed to play five games, defeating Danum, Ash Hill and Hayfield along the way.

There were many notable performers over the course of the season. In the bowling department Saif Raja (10Thomson), Andrew Moores (9Cooper), Jake Johnson (10Piercey) and Andrew Gitsham (9Boughey) were all amongst the wickets. Jack Morris (10Claringbold) has improved his batting dramatically. Connor Martin (10Grace) developed into an excellent wicket keeper and the team was again captained superbly by Luke Cockburn (10Taylor). All rounder of the year has to be Ross Green (9Kendell), who has left the opposition bamboozled by his mystery spin, frustrated by his shot making and with sore sides from his constant banter.

It has been a pleasure looking after this team. Well done, lads.

Year 7 Year 8

There was unprecedented interest and competition for first team places this year with numbers of 50+ attending training at the start of the year. The Year 7 first team had a strong start to their 2011-12 season, defeating Balby Carr (5-0), Armthorpe (7-1) and Don Valley (6-3). The boys drew against Hayfield (4-4) and lost the remaining games against Hungerhill (3-0), Ridgewood (3-1) and McAuley (1-0). This meant a mid-table finish for the boys in the Doncaster Schools’ League.

There were many notable performances from a wide range of players, including Tomasz Gravil (7Kendrick) between the sticks, Owen Blake (7Caughey) at the heart of the defence, Owen Greaves (7Simpson), Luke Pike (8Norton) and James Gill (7Kendrick) in the midfield and leading goal-scorer for the season Callum Verhees (7Cooper) up front. Next year holds a lot of promise for a team which has a strong spine and could go on to achieve good things if they continue to train hard and work for each other.

Year 7This season was another difficult year for Year 8 with several negative results punctuated by many reasons to be optimistic. The team did not manage to record any victories in terms of results although many of the players can feel very proud of their performances. Captain Joshua Wilson (8Clarke) typified the spirit of a few of the players, producing consistent displays of determination and courage. Several other players turned out week in, week out despite the potentially demoralising results. These players form the core of what promises to be a very strong team, but without the backing of other talented sportsmen in the year group they have struggled to turn their hard work and commitment into victories on the pitch.

The hard core of committed players should encourage other players to represent the school and this should make the Year 9 team a force to be reckoned with in 2012-2013.

Year 9 Year 10

Year 10 had an improved season in terms of results and posted a balanced final tally of two wins, two draws and three defeats. This left them finishing mid-table in the Doncaster Schools’ League. Highlights of the season included a stunning 4-1 victory over a title-chasing Don Valley, while the team also triumphed 3-1 against Balby Carr early in the campaign. Draws against Armthorpe (2-2) and Hayfield (3-3) were also registered while the team were defeated by Ridgewood (0-3), Hungerhill (2-8) and McAuley (0-1). Many players represented the team during the year and a special mention needs to go to stand-out player and leading goal-scorer Lewis Collins (10Dixey) who had his best season at Trinity so far. Another who also played well during the year was Jamie Stroud (10Robson) who always gave one hundred per cent in defence and continues to improve. Next year the team will challenge for the Year 11 Cup and some of the stronger players will be hoping to gain first team recognition here at Trinity.

The Year 9 football team had an indifferent season in terms of both results and performances which meant a mid-table league finish. Highlights of the season included victories against Balby Carr and Priory School in the county cup competition. Over fifteen players represented the team this year with stand out performances from Jordan Linley (9Booth) in midfield and Ross Green (9Kendell) in goal in his first year as a Trinity student.

A special mention must go out to Kieron McKenna (9Cooper), Jack Wright (9Cooper) and Adam Osborne (9Cooper) who have helped out with squad selection and kit preparation throughout their three years at Trinity and continually give a hundred per cent in all matches. The performances of Linley and Gitsham saw them promoted to the Year 10 side, contributing to their best season ever at Trinity.

First XI Year 7

Having lost a number of key players who left the academy at the end of Year 11 and Year 13, this was always going to be a transitional season.

The squad still had a strong backbone with the likes of Pickersgill, Spencer, Bower, Lawson, Glynn, Wales and Skillcorn. The lads progressed to the third round of the English Schools Cup before eventually losing out to Don Valley on penalties. They also made it to the semi-final of the South Yorkshire Cup, losing out to eventual winners Balby Carr Academy 1-0.

The boys should be happy with another good season. Hopefully we can unearth a goal scorer ready for the start of next season.

It has been a superb first season of rugby at Trinity for Year 7. Weekly training sessions began when the students were in Year 6. This meant that the boys were familiar with the skills and rules of rugby and also there was a team spirit when the boys arrived at Trinity full-time.

Training sessions have continued to be well attended throughout the year with a regular turnout of 25 boys. This training has paid off with all boys making progress in both their performance and their understanding of the game.

In total the boys played 9 games, winning 7 of them. The highlight of the season was winning the South Yorkshire Schools Cup in April when we defeated McAuley 30 – 0 in the final.

Hopefully the commitment to training will remain and the boys will continue to enjoy the game in the future.

Year 8 Year 9

The boys have continued their fine tradition of being the most successful rugby team at Trinity.

It was a tougher season, with our opposition catching us up in terms of their size and skills. Games have therefore been much closer and it has been more of a test. In the tighter games a lack of training shows and this is something the boys need to realise.

In total the boys have played eleven games, winning nine and only tasting defeat in two. One of these defeats came against Hymers College, a school with a long tradition of rugby success. The defeat was narrow and Trinity played perhaps their most mature and best rugby of the season in this fixture.

The season ended on a high when the Year 9 team retained their South Yorkshire Schools Rugby trophy with a 29 – 22 defeat of Meadowhead.

The 2011-12 season saw the Year 8 rugby team make further progress. The key highlights of the season were reaching the semi-final of the South Yorkshire Cup in particular, and also finishing third in a tournament hosted by Thornensians. The team won several fixtures this season, showing further improvement after struggling against a number of opponents last season.

Quinn Leggott (8Crane), as captain, has led by example. He has contributed solidly as the leader of the team and by leading the points scoring for the side. However, the players around him have followed his lead and have all contributed well with strong running, excellent link-up play and determination.

All of this shows that the team spirit, hard work and training are beginning to pay dividends. Next year will be another good season which will definitely build on this year’s successes.

Year 11

The progress that was made by this year group last year was curtailed somewhat by having to play a combined Year10/11 team on several occasions. Nevertheless the players gave of their best throughout the season and the experiences they have gained in playing against older and stronger opposition will benefit them next year. Once again Oliver Passmoor and Jack Fletcher were the players the team relied on heavily but a few more names are beginning to make their mark in the team. Cameron Jones and Robert Hardy played extremely well this year and have made excellent progress. Training as usual has been a problem but if we are committed to a Year 10/11 team next year there will be strong competition for places as this year’s Year 9 team were South Yorkshire champions and have a nucleus of very good players. I am pleased to report that from the squad Cameron Jones (10Dixey), Oliver Passmoor (10McNally), Robert Hardy (10Grace) and Jack Fletcher (10Brown) have all been successful in gaining selection for the ESF Lions tour this year, 2012. We wish them well in what has become a highlight of the year for the players that have been chosen.

Year 10

An excellent season where the lads concluded their time together by becoming South Yorkshire champions, beating Barnsley College in their final ever game together and winning 3-0 through pure grit and determination. Special mention must go to the Y13 who are our first students to play all through the years here at Trinity from 7 – 13. We wish them well as they now go on to to play for either university or local club sides.

TennisBOYS SPORTS REPORTS 2011 - 2012 SPORTS REPORT

2011-2012 has been a year when tennis has cemented its place as a competitive sport in Trinity Academy with the boys being entered into a national competition for the second time. The number of boys attending Tennis Club after school is still high and the level of performance is continuing to improve.

Trinity is represented by two teams in the AEGON National Schools Tennis Competition. The Year 7/8 team consists of Francis Sykes (7Cole), captain, Owen Greaves (7Simpson), Joseph Gleaves (7Witty) and Luke Pike (8Norton). The Year 9 team consists of Andrew Gitsham (9Boughey), captain, Alec Hanson (9McArthur), Adam Osborne (9Cooper) and Jacob Porter (9McArthur).

We played four fixtures in total against South Yorkshire oppositions.

Both boys teams were entered into the Doncaster Schools Competition in which they played Doubles in a tie break format. Sadly neither team progressed to the Regional’s. The results are as follows:

Andrew Gitsham and Jacob Porter progressed from the preliminary competition to the finals. They were drawn against Hayfield A (a team which had been identified as the strongest pairing at the preliminaries). A hard fought match was enjoyed with a single set lasting over an hour. They were ultimately defeated 6 - 3 in a game in which the quality of tennis warranted a final match.

These games were closely fought and our boys can take a lot of credit for the way they gave the opposition such a difficult time on the tennis court. On the whole it has been a positive season with the Year 7/8 team especially showing a lot of potential. The boys have developed their skills and most importantly enjoyed the experience. Bring on next year!

Year 7With driving rain and wind and a mud bath of a pitch, the game plan was to keep it simple: run hard and get to the breakdowns first.

The start of the game was tight, both Trinity and McAuley handling well and clearly up for the challenge. Trinity got their noses in front after ten minutes, when a prolonged period of driving the ball by the forwards led to Kyle Stennett (7Simpson) crashing over. The second try was similar: Patrick Trimingham (7Kendrick), Charlie Hunsley (7Cooper) and Daniel Wilcox (7Simpson) all drove the ball forward and Stennett finished off the move. Tino Ngara (7Cole) added a third try with a trademark run following slick passing from Jordan Bull (7Cole) and Owen Blake (7Caughey). On the stroke of half time Jordan Bull made a powerful run and outpaced the McAuley defence.

In the second half sensible kicking by Jordan Bull led to territorial dominance and Trinity added further tries by Jordan Bull and Owen Blake. The final score was 30 - 0. Player of the match: Jordan Bull.

First coming together for rugby coaching in Year 6, 20+ boys have turned out every week this year. This dedication has developed both their individual skills and a team spirit.

Year 9Both sides were equally determined, and only slowly did Trinity begin to dominate. The passing, support play

and rucking were particularly good considering the dreadful weather. Four first half tries meant a 22 - 5 lead into the break.

A tense second half, with Meadowhead scoring an early try. However, despite three further tries from Meadowhead and sustained pressure, Trinity held on and, late on in the game, man of the match Roach gave them a further try.

Tries came from Jared Roach (9Shaw) (2), Thomas Smith (9Rhodes) (2) and Jordan Linley (9Booth), with conversions from Daniel Fenwick (9Kendell). A close call, but at the finish it was Trinity 29, Meadowhead 24.

Player of the match: Jared Roach.

1st XVIt was hard from the start for Trinity to put in a clean performance. Very much a forwards game, the combined wind, rain and mud meant that passing the ball was very difficult.

A low kick-off from the opposition caused confusion and resulted in panic from Trinity. However, Trinity’s defence shone, and they were soon back up the pitch into Barnsley’s half.

A scuffle. Trinity penalty. Barsnley strong in defence, second Trinity penalty. Over the bar. Matthew Green (12Howlett) had made it 3-0 to Trinity after only 10 minutes.

For the rest of the first half, Trinity piled on the pressure with excellent runs from Gavin Wales (13Laycock),

Nathan Hawson (13Harrison), Jonathan Bower (13Harrison) and Lee Lawson (13Harrison). Great play from Evan Johnson (12Hall) in the scrum meant that Barnsley’s scrum half was unable to get the ball to his backs, leading to turnover ball for Trinity.

A long kick off from Matthew Green started the second half, with a big chase from all three back row players, leaving Barnsley deep in their 22 for the next 10-15 minutes. Conditions still meant that moving the ball wide was difficult, so both forward play and crash ball to Jonathan Bower were the order of the day. Big runs from Owen Taylor (13Ramsden), Keiran Bowman (13Smyth), William Pearson (13Harrison) and Samuel Thurlow (13Harrison), but unfortunately a penalty and a yellow card against Trinity meant that Barnsley were able to pile on the pressure. However, with a few adjustments and grit and determination Trinity were able to hold off multiple attacks from the Barnsley side and be crowned South Yorkshire Champions.

Great credit to Barnsley: a very even match, as anyone familiar with rugby scores can see. Only three points in it, but still, it was Trinity 3, Barnsley College 0.

Players of the match: Evan Johnson, Owen Taylor, Samuel Thurlow.

SPORTS REPORT BOYS SPORTS REPORTS 2011 - 2012

Trinity Academy rugby players scored a remarkable hat-trick. On April 25th 2012, at Dinnington Rugby Club, the 1st XV (Years 12 and 13), the Year 9 XV and the Year 7 XV all became champions in their respective groups.

Hats Off to our Rugby Players
