The home has always been the space of reflection of the changes that society, economy and culture cast upon our everyday life. In this last decade, the profound metamorphoses which have been taking place worldwide are deeply affecting our lifestyle and our way of conceiving the domestic space for the future. Within less than 20 years, more than 70% of the world’s population will be living in metropolitan environments, and the domestic space - the home - will become a complex and fragmentary mirror of this global change. Home as a shelter; home as a laboratory and a workplace; home as borderland between private and public worlds; home as a meeting place and a place of solitude; home as the projection of our most hidden desires; home as an ecological resource and a source of solidarity; home as condition in nomadic movement; home just for a few hours, in a place of passage, in other realities.
In the history of mankind, the home has always represented one of the starting points of the changes that have subsequently transformed the cities and our daily lives. In the present time, it is necessary to reconsider this topic looking at it from a different perspective, with a curious and experimental attitude, exploring
new domestic landscapesluca molinari
the innovative and diverse dimensions of domestic living. Home as gravity centre for extensive research, both in terms of space and manufacts (objects, textiles, furnitures, etc.) conceived to bring life into it.
It is necessary to reconsider today the basic idea of home, blending together the history of domestic spaces and the cultures of dwelling, their profound and archaic roots, with a positive attitude oriented towards the future and towards the transformations that our cities are currently undergoing. It is necessary to learn how to look at the home as a key entity of the minute transformation process of the city: an ecological, environmental sensitive place; a place for encountering people and for the quiet, silent care of our personal selves; a place for a new kind of work system, for creativity, but at the same time a place that reflects the progressive mutation of the structure of the family, which generates new desires and new requirements. Home as a complex and open system, from the co-housing experiences to the issues of recycling resources and achieving environmental quality. The home, from this point of view, becomes a fragment of a positive and hopeful transformation of the cities where we live.

THE CIRCUSThe world as a stage. Nomadic perpetual public performance.
The caravan: moving in mass and the minimum movable society.
Animals and objects: a list for a complete world’s metaphore.
The best.
The worst.
The most.
Unforgettable.
Impossible.
Unique.
Extreme.
Common sense vs. extraordinary.
What’s inside the circus.
How is it on show.
How does it work.
How does it move.
Where does it go.
Who is going to see it.
What is to be shown?
What is to be remebered?
What is astonishing?
What is the sense of the out of ordinary?
The great collection on show.
What kind of structure does such a collection need?
The circus as a blank page.

RITUAL
SHINTOway of the spirits
The Gods of Shinto are the life of the natural world in all its rich variety. The sacred does not lie outside of life but is one with it. (Heising)
FAMILYThe main mechanism by which traditions are preserved
CLEANLINESSHumans are born pure. Impurity or sin can be got rid of by simple cleansing rituals
NATUREIt’s sacred as it is imbued with spirits (Kami)
MATSURI (FESTIVAL) Any occasion for oering thanks and praise to a deity at a shrine
Ritual rather than belief is at the heart of Shinto. A series of actions and beahaviours that enable human beings to c o m m u n i c a t e with Kami in order to thank or obtain something.
Kami are a highier manifestation of the life energy, an extraordinary or awesome version. They are not divine neither perfect, they inhabit the same world as we do, they make the same mistakes as we do.
Being a worship-per means “living a simple and harmonius life with nature and people”. Shinto does not require adherents to follow it as their only religion.
WEDDINGIt’s a small-scale aair involving the couple, their family and their close friends
HATSUMIYAMAIRIIt’s when a newborn baby is taken to a shrine, to be placed under the protection of the Kami
HARAEPurication rites to restore purity and cleanse both body and mind
PRIESTHe conducts rites in the temple’s oering hall. They are the only one who can enter the sacred sanctuary
SHRINE (TEMPLE)Worship takes place in shrines built with great understanding of the natural world
KAMIDANAIt is a place in the home set aside as a shrine. It is a shelf where to make oerings and pray
MIKOSHIIt is a portable shrine: a divine palanquine used to carry a Kami during processions
The shrine (jinja) is a sacred place where Kami live. They don’t need to be buildings if they are special to Kami. Torii gates separate our living world and the world the Kami live in.
AMATERASU (SUN)The most worshipped of all Kami, often symbolized by a mirror
8 MILIONIt is said there are Yaoyorozu-no-Kami (8 milion Kami), a representation of an innite number
GROWTH Kami are gods and spirit beings, but also abstract entities like forces of Nature or growth
KITSUNE (FOX)The fox is the messenger of Oinari, the Kami of the rice harvest

Shinto-The Kami Way is an event installation to be celebrated in Parco Sempione Milan in early September evenings as an Aki Matsuri, the Autumn festival.Five different paths celebrate five different elements of the Shinto rituals: Purification, Offering, Divine Amusement, Prayer, Feast. Each path starts with a torii gate, as the entrance to the Shrine, and ends at the central lake. This represents the shinden, the inner part of the sanctuary where the Kami is invited to dwell. The Kami, the Spirit, is any manifestation of life energy. Amaterasu, the sun goddedss, the most worshipped of the Kami, is here represented by an egg-shaped mirror that reflects light of brightness and purity.
The Heiden is the offering Hall, where the worshipper stops before the Sacred Sanctuary. The simple act of devotion is performed by tossing a coin into the offering box, bowing twice deeply, clapping the hands twice at the level of the chest, bowing once more deeply and then again but only slightly before turning away.

SHRINE STALL
THE PATHS A path leading to a shrine is called “the approach” (sando). The approach helps the worshipper to move spiritually from the everyday world to a place of holiness and purity. The aesthetics of the ritual can
have a powerful emotional and spiritual effect.
Omikuji is an official fortune telling document printed on a small sheet of paper purchased with an offering at the Shinto shrines. When the prediction is bad, it is a custom to fold it up and attach it to a pine tree in the temple grounds. In the event of the fortune being good, the bearer
should keep it. Ema is a wooden block customized for writing a
prayer, which is then tied to an ad hoc scaffold.
Naorai means “to eat together withthe kami”. Enjoying a relaxing and even hilarious meal is part of the Shinto ceremony. The mix of different moods is an important feature in the Shinto celebration of the kami.
There are various form of entertainment that are in a sense also regarded as a way to please the kami. Noh is a traditional form of theatre in which the performers play different roles with the use of special masks.
