YEAR 10 CURRICULUM PATHWAYS 2017-2019
All Students will study the Core curriculum: English, Mathematics, Science and Computing. Students
will also have the following subjects on their timetable: Religious Education, Citizenship, PSHE, PE and
Games.
Students will have some choice in the subjects they study, but the curriculum pathways that they
started on this year have been matched to their prior attainment data and predicted grades – this will
enable them to make progress and achieve their full potential.
The course level will be matched to the students’ ability and predicted grades. Students will be
monitored carefully throughout Year 10 and 11 and as a result of this, the level or subject content of
the course may be changed to allow students to achieve, progress and succeed.
The Curriculum Pathways are:
Pathway 1 – Students will continue to study the courses that they started at the beginning of Year 9
(either Geography or History, a STEM subject, and a Creative subject). They will select
their final subject from the Option Block.
Pathway 2 – Students will continue to study the ‘Skills For Life’ course that they started at the
beginning of Year 9. They will select further subjects from the Option Blocks.
7
PROCESS OF CHOOSING OPTIONS
The process of choosing options for Year 10 is divided into two stages:
STAGE 1 Students will select subjects from their Pathway’s Student Choices Poll and put them in order of preferred
choice. An example of this questionnaire is overleaf. The questionnaire will be sent to parents/carers on
the 5th January 2017 and this needs to be returned to Form Tutors by the 13th January 2017.
After this stage, the choices will be electronically processed to design the option block(s) for Stage 2
(Please note that Pathway 1 students will only have one option block this year as they made several
choices at the end of Year 8).
STAGE 2
Students will be given the final option blocks pro-forma and then will need to select a first and second
choice for each block. The pro-forma will be given to students during the week beginning 6th February
2017 in Tutorial time, and needs to be taken home to discuss with parents/carers ready for the one to
one interview (Pathway 2 only) during the week beginning 20th February 2017. All students should have
returned their final choices form by Wednesday 22nd February 2017.

CAREER CONNECT
Career Connect offers independent and impartial careers information, advice and guidance. At present
there are two Careers Advisors who work at Cowley.
All Year 9 students can access the Careers Advisors in the Careers Office on Level 1 of the West Wing if
they require help with decision making about which courses to study in Year 10.
SOME ADVICE FROM THE CAREERS ADVISERS AT COWLEY
The courses and subjects you decide to study in Years 10 and 11 can affect what you do in the future, so choose your options with care.
Find out which subjects you will need. If you have a course or a job in mind, check out the ENTRY REQUIREMENTS. These are not always as obvious as you might think, so check carefully.
Some A level subjects cannot be taken unless you have achieved the required GCSE grade in those subjects. Other A level subjects don’t require you to have taken them at GCSE. Find out more about this by asking your teachers or looking at the Sixth Form Prospectus.
Taking a vocational course doesn’t mean that you are committing yourself to a particular type of job (just as taking History doesn’t mean that you are going to become a historian); it simply means that you have chosen one subject which is more about the world of work than traditional subjects.
Don’t forget how important modern foreign languages will be for jobs in the future. You are as likely (maybe even more likely) to travel abroad in your work if you are an engineer or scientist as you are if you work in the tourism industry!
It is never too early to start finding out about jobs and courses. If you can’t find the information you need
ask the Careers Advisers or use the CareerConnect website www.careerconnect.org.uk

CAREERS EDUCATION AND GUIDANCE
Careers Information, Advice and Guidance is a vital part of the preparation of students for the
opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of adult life. Its central concern is preparing students for
the choices, changes and transitions affecting their future education, training and life as adult members
of society.
Careers Information, Advice and Guidance forms an important part of the College’s Personal, Social and
Health Education (P.S.H.E). Students experience a range of careers activities including: the College
careers fair (Future Fair), visits to local employers and further/higher education establishments and
careers exhibitions, presentations from the uniformed services, career workshops and opportunities to
meet representatives from the world of work. Careers lessons via P.S.H.E. are also a part of the
curriculum.
In Year 11, all students will have the opportunity to have a session with the Careers Advisers with career
action planning linked to possible progression routes. All students will meet with the Careers Advisors
and will also receive individual help and guidance from them as appropriate. Careers Advisers are also
present at some Parents’ Evenings.

COWLEY SIXTH FORM
Cowley Sixth Form is based in a completely separate building from the 11 – 16 Campus. The self-
contained Post 16 provision offers A Level, BTEC and GCSE courses in over 40 subjects. The new
facilities have up-to-date equipment to enable students to learn using twenty first century
technologies, whilst retaining the character of the original Art Deco Cowley Grammar School.
Approximately 150 students from each year group progress into the Sixth Form, but we also recruit
from other schools in the borough as well as neighbouring regions. This has made Cowley the largest
Sixth Form in St Helens and enabled us to offer such a diverse curriculum.
Many subjects offered at A Level require students to have studied them at GCSE and achieved a
particular grade. It is worthwhile enquiring about progression requirements from subject teachers
before making option choices.
For further information about the Sixth Form see Mr Hesketh (Head of Sixth Form).
