Year 8 Options
This booklet is designed for students, parents and carers to have clear and concise informa on regarding
op on choices for Key Stage 4. Due to the curriculum reform that has happened na onally, we feel
students would benefit greatly from beginning their KS4 curriculum in Year 9.
In providing these subject choices, we are aiming to meet the needs of all learners to equip them with
the knowledge and skills that they need in the evolving landscape beyond compulsory educa on. GCSEs
are the main qualifica ons that are on offer and these are complimented by voca onal qualifica ons in
some subjects, which offer a more flexible method of assessment whilst allowing students to achieve a
GCSE equivalent award.
The key dates for the op ons process are outlined below:
Tuesday 16 January 2018—Op ons Informa on Evening
Wednesday 24 January 2018—Progress Day
Week commencing Monday 29 January 2018—Students to inform their tutor of their op on choices
Students and parents/carers are encouraged to aFend the Op ons evening and Progress Day in order to
find out at much informa on as possible about the subjects on offer and your suitability for the course.
If there are any ques ons regarding this process then these should be directed to tutors in the first
instance, who will be fully informed about the process and who can support their students. Other staff
who are able to offer advice and guidance are listed below:
Mrs L Townsend—Leader of Data and Curriculum
Mr D LiFleford —Progress Leader, Year 8
Mrs K Jones—CEIAG and Careers advisor

Which subjects can I choose?
All students have the choice of three op ons, with an addi onal fourth choice if they wish to take a
subject listed within our ‘3rd session’. The 3rd session op on would mean two addi onal school hours
each week for 3 years in order to complete the course.
Below is the list of subjects for students to chose from. They will need to pick one subject from op on
blocks 1-3 and if they wish to take an addi onal fourth subject they can pick from the 3rd session list.
When making choices they will also be asked to choose a reserve subject, in case we are not able to offer
the first three first choices. If we need to use a reserve subject we will talk to any students affected
about this first. All subject have been coded with either a (G) to indicate this is a GCSE qualifica on or a
(V) to indicate this is a voca onal style qualifica on. Please read the subject informa on carefully for
more detail on each of the courses:

Glossary
Cambridge Naonal is a GCSE equivalent course where students can achieve a Level 1 or Level 2
qualifica on. These courses are 75% coursework and 25% exam.
Controlled Assessment takes place under examina on condi ons either set by the board and marked by
teachers or set by teachers and marked by the examina on board. Assessments can range from wriFen
tasks to delivering presenta ons to speaking and listening assessments.
Coursework is work which is completed by students and contributes towards the final grade of a course.
Coursework is not completed under examina on condi ons but has set guidelines from examina on
boards which will be outlined by individual teachers.
Examinaon Board is an organisa on that is responsible for seMng and awarding qualifica ons.
Different subjects will use different examina on boards.
External Examiner is an individual sent by the examina on board to ensure that any work submiFed
meets the requirements of the course the student is studying. The external examiner may complete an
assessment or view any work that has been completed.
GCSE (General Cerficate of Secondary Educaon) is the standard examina on which most students
complete in a range of subjects.
Linear examinaons are a way of assessing students at the end of their course, this would normally be
at the end of Year 11.
Specificaon is the document which outlines the content that the students have to complete in order to
achieve their qualifica on.
Third Session provides students with an opportunity to study an addi onal subject aNer the end of the
normal school day. The exact availability will depend on demand, with limited subjects available.
Tiered Examinaon Papers are where examina ons are set based on the ability of the student. The
examina ons can be set at higher level and founda on level.
Unered Examinaon Papers are examina ons which students of all abili es complete.
The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) This consists of 5 core academic qualifica ons: English, Mathema cs,
History or Geography, Science (including Computer Science) and a language.

Qualifica on type—GCSE
What does the course involve?
This GCSE course is an integral part of all students’ study at Key Stage 4. Easily combined with English Literature, there is an
overlap in skills, to ensure a quality curriculum that enables students to read, analyse and produce fic on and non-fic on texts
for a variety of purposes. English is seen by applicants to college or appren ceships as being a crucial qualifica on with either
a grade 4 or 5 needed to secure most places.
The topics covered are fic on, non-fic on, 19th century texts, wri ng for a variety of purposes (including to entertain and to
persuade), and there is also a spoken element of the GCSE.

Students will also sit a GCSE style ques on paper at the end of Year 9.

Qualifica on type—GCSE
What does the course involve?
This course encourages students to develop knowledge and skills in reading, wri ng and cri cal thinking. It builds on skills
from the GCSE English Language course to enable constant prac ce.
Skills required are: the ability to read texts and analyse implicit and explicit informa on; the ability to compare poems (both

How will I be assessed?
This course is 100% examina on, which will occur in the May or June of Year 11.
There are 2 examina ons.

Qualifica on type—GCSE
What does the course involve?
Mathema cs teaches us a way of thinking. It provides the tools for making informed decisions throughout our lives both
inside and out of the classroom. Success in mathema cs is vital in being compe ve when applying for college or
appren ceship places with either a grade 4 or 5 needed to secure most places.
The new GCSE Mathema cs content has been divided into six main domains:
There are rela vely minor changes to (and a small increase in) the content but a change in style means that there is no longer
a requirement to assess quality of wriFen communica on and func onal elements. This should make the contents of the
course more accessible to students who have difficulty picking out the key parts of a ques ons or understanding exactly what
is required of them. However a lot more problem solving and applied ques ons are demanded.
There will usually be three Mathema cs groups in each year half. All groups from each half are taught at the same me and
the Mathema cs faculty have a certain degree of flexibility to move students between groups if required throughout the
course; we meet regularly to discuss such cases.
The majority of students will aim to GCSE at the Higher er, with some students entered at Founda on er. However, almost
all students will ini ally study the Higher er content, un l at least Year 11 when a decision is made on which er is most
appropriate for each student on an individual basis.
How will I be assessed?
All six areas are assessed via three end of course (i.e. at the end of Year 11) external examina ons. There is no coursework
element therefore these examina ons make up 100% of the assessment. Paper 1 is a non-calculator assessment whereas a
calculator is allowed for Papers 2 and 3. All papers are 90 minutes in dura on and contribute equally to the overall grade.
There are two ers available: Founda on er, with grades 1-5 available; and Higher er, with grades 4-9 available. Students sit
all three examina ons at the same er.
Where could a qualifica on in this subject take me?
GCSE Mathema cs is an important founda on for many courses and careers. Almost all jobs and careers require a
Mathema cs GCSE, but the following are some that use Mathema cs extensively:
