These are methods of expression that help a performer think about what that they want to communicate. Some of these conventions include; still images, thought tracking and critical moments. By using mimicry and role- play, the students become more comfortable with expressing themselves. Through fun and interactive units we hope to awaken their passion for Drama and provide them with opportunities to collaborate, communicate and activate their creative thinking. Year 8 – Commedia & Melodrama Students have now settled into Drama as a subject and have increased their confidence as a performer. They will start exploring different forms of World Theatre. The aim is to expand their knowledge of Theatre through history, character analysis, performance analysis and script writing. This will allow them increased success in performances. In class there are opportunities provided to explore new ways of expression and movement. We make use of props, masks, videos and workshops to expand experience and diversify learning. Through the use of small group collaboration students learn the value of group work and how to play to their strengths. Year 9 – Two units in total – Brecht and the Art of Monologue In this year the students start to create a more focused approach to Drama. Students are play wrights and solo performers using the world around them as a starting stimulus. Students are encouraged to become more independent and free thinkers in Drama. They look at politics and the world around them and the effect it has on the arts.

Year 10 and 11 Units

1

Year 10 – Two units in total – looking at BOAL and

Physical THeatre

In both units the emphasis is on the student developing an understanding of ideas and issues through drama and using the mediums and elements of drama to structure their responses into a meaningful piece of Drama work. The ideas and responses will arise from different kinds of texts explored during the course. The texts will enable students to make connections and comparisons across different times and/or cultures. Within these two explorative units the work is intended to have meaning for the participants and is not intended for performance to a theatre audience.

2

Year 11 – Interpretation of Design in Theatre – looking through the eyes of a Theatre Designer AND an Actor. Both units introduces students to the content of ‘a play’ or text written for performance theatre. They will learn how to interpret a play in various ways and understand how a play works in performance and design.

The play text to be studied will ensure that it is suitable for students’ interests and abilities.
