Year 6:
October just seems to have flown by in Y6. We
have only just returned from Bewerley Park, and
what a fantastic highlight of the month it was.
Every day we set off on a different expedition
which included canoeing,
going down the lead mines,
high and low rope activities, gorge walking, river study,
orienteering, Brimham rocks challenges and scar house
reservoir- all in the beautiful Autumn Nidderdale land-
scape. As it was Halloween we also had a spooky night
walk complete with glow sticks and costumes, after
which the children tucked into trick or treat goodies!
Year 6 were an absolute pleasure to spend the week
with; they were incredibly kind, supportive and caring of
one another and threw themselves into every challenge going. Children were
also amazing at helping one another tackle their fears: Well done to every-
one!! We could not have
been prouder of them. A
huge thank you too to all
the Water Street and Bew-
erley Park staff who made
the trip so memorable and
fantastic. We look forward
to sharing our photo CD
with the Year 6 parents
and pupils in the next few
weeks.
We thought next month would be
a little quieter but we have lots of
exciting events coming up includ-
ing: Year 6 taking part in National
Museum take over day on No-
vemner 17th; a visit from Rolls
Royce Engineers and also a
class visit to Rolls Royce
engineering in
Barnoldswick.

Reception:
Wow! Into our second half term already! Where has the time gone?
It has been a wonderful first half term. The children have settled into school life
brilliantly and have enjoyed making new friends. Harvest was fantastic and we
were so proud of Reception’s contributions (although we
can promise you they raised the roof when rehearsing in
the classroom! We experienced a little stage fright in the
church I think!). Throughout October we immersed our-
selves in all things autumn and the children’s imagination
and interest was really captivated by ‘Hedgehogs’ so as
we always do in Reception, we went with it… Before long
we were making clay and bread hedgehogs, telling
hedgehog stories, drawing and writing about hedgehogs,
making hedgehog beds for them to hibernate in and per-
haps best of all we had a visit from Hedgy the six week
old rescue hedgehog! It was wonderful!
Since coming back after half term we have been reading
‘Room on the Broom’ and the children have been enjoy-
ing some Halloween crafts. However, bonfire night has
got the children interested in fire engines, fire fighters and
fire safety so for the next few weeks we will explore this
theme, starting with a visit to the fire station on Monday.
We can’t wait!
Thank you for all of the work that you put into the family
scrapbooks over half term and for completing the half
term number hunt challenge too. Thank you also for all of the lovely additions to
tapestry, we absolutely love reading your observations form home! They help us
to build a fantastic picture of your child’s learning journey. Keep them coming…
Mrs Roberts
Feedback from school photographs Thank you to everyone who gave us feedback from the school photographer we trialled earlier this
term—here is a summary of feedback we received.
We received more orders than we have done previously
Feedback from children was much more positive (especially from older pupils)
There were many positive comments about the quality of the photos/proofs
There was some concern regarding the lack of options available on the order form - no option to
purchase just one big photograph and a few smaller ones, plus order form was complicated.
Some parents would have preferred a more traditional pose showing school uniform.
Overall the comments / feedback was more positive towards the new photographers, however we will
‘trial’ a different company for our next ‘lot’ of school photographs—until we found one we are happy with!!!
Thank you for taking the time to give your feedback—we appreciate it...
Year 2:
Where did October disappear to so quickly? We really have been working hard in
Y2 and have produced some great work. We finished our Katie Morag display by
adding some more houses and transport features of the island. We then went on to
look at the similarities and differences between the Isle of Coll and Skipton and had
a go at producing a poster for tourists.
The Katie Morag topic homework has been amazing and there have been some brilliant maps, welly de-
signs and stories. Thank you all for your help at home.
In art we all had a great time looking at tartan designs,
thank you to all the beautiful tartan items you brought it. We
then had a go at making our own tartan patterns firstly using
pastels and then using tissue paper, you can see them dis-
played in our classroom and they really do look great.
We ended the English work by writing our own endings to
one of the Katie Morag stories. Disaster seemed to strike the island in many different ways but luckily Katie
had lots of cunning plans and managed to save the day – every time! We particularly liked it when famous
stars came and helped out with their helicopter!
In maths we have become really confident with our adding and subtracting and using different ways to do
this. We have ended the term having a go at some maths games to help reinforce our knowledge.
In Science we have been continuing our work about Healthy living and thinking about how we keep fit and
healthy through exercise and healthy eating. We have designed some healthy pizzas and also a healthy
packed lunch. They made some great food choices.
We also had a great visit from the Hedgehog rescue centre and really enjoyed
learning all about them. We wrote some great fact sheets and they were very
grateful for all the donations of cat and dog food.
We have also worked very hard learning the Hungry Caterpillar in German (Die
kleine Hungrige Raupe)as a whole class, complete with actions and we had great
fun reciting it at our Harvest Festival. Well done to everyone involved for all their
hard work
Wow Year 2—you are brilliant!
Mrs Rimmington
A gentle reminder… Pupils should not be left unattended on the main playground
before 8.45am.
Members of staff will be outside on duty from
8.45am, before that time pupils are still the
responsibility of parents.
Many thanks for your help in this matter.
Year 3:
What a busy month we have had! Year 3 have worked extremely hard this month, partic-
ularly in maths where we have been battling the column method. We began with simple
addition sums, moving on to 3 digit numbers with exchanging and even had a go at miss-
ing number problems. We have also been subtracting using this method and have just
got to grips with exchanging and regrouping- fab!
In literacy we have been researching the Stone Age, we have learnt allsorts about this
period, using the internet, books and investigating during our Topic lessons. This infor-
mation has all been put together to create a class information book.
We’ve been busy in Science this month. Everyone has been really en-
gaged in our ‘Rocks’ topic. It has been great seeing all the special rocks
that they have collected over the years and brilliant to see children com-
ing to the front of the class to tell everyone about what they have got.
We have had an ‘archaeological dig’ this month where children got the
opportunity to look for fossils in the sand using tools that would be used by
archaeologists and we had a great afternoon investigating what soil is
made of. I have never seen a group of children so excited by soil. It was brilliant!
Finally, we have spent time practicing and rehearsing for our part in the Harvest perfor-
mance at Church. I think you will all agree that although it didn’t go quite as we had
practiced, the children did a great job and coped well without the use of a microphone.
Well done Year 3! Mrs Taylor
Year 1:
We had a busy end to our first half term in Year 1 and have started our new half term
just as busily! The end of last term saw us practising for our Harvest Festival and it was
Year 1’s job to celebrate all food that is English. The children did a great job and sang
very well in church - a good practise for all the
singing we will do at the end of the term in our
Nativity.
KS1 had a visit from a lady from the Hedgehog
Sanctuary and the children were brilliant asking
lots of excellent questions and were excited to
meet ‘Hedgy’. We learned that a Hedgehog
does not like to eat many worms and in fact too
many will make him ill!
We have been conducting and ongoing Science experiment with some bread and
finally we have some interesting results. Each piece of bread was handled differently.
The top was just put in the bag using Mrs Munslows’ fingers, the middle was put in with
Mrs Munslow wearing gloves and the bottom one the whole of Year 1 touched with un-
washed hands before we put it into the bag. The children have been fascinated with
the changes and we were very interested to see that the ‘clean’ bag developed more
mould than the bread that Mrs Munslow had touched with her bare hands!
We look forward to seeing you in our Maths lessons in the coming weeks and look for-
ward to sharing with you what we have learned at the Ilkley Toy Museum.

Year 5:
It’s all been very autumnal in Year 5 during October! We started the month
with a BRILLIANT visit to The Bradford Industrial Museum, wearing Victorian
costume and carrying food and drink for lunch that would have been avail-
able to a Victorian mill-working child. The spinning and weaving workshop
was GREAT and the noise from the machines set working by the museum
staff for us was incredible! Although not autumnal in the strictest sense, I
challenge you to feel anything other than a nip in the air when surrounded
by children wrapped in shawls or sporting flat caps!
The Harvest Festival followed on swiftly which the class REALLY enjoyed.
Thank you so much for coming along and joining in.
In the last week before the half term break, we spent time in the Science
Garden, using it to inspire our budding inner poets. We’ve done some great
vocabulary work, worked like made on word classes, tried our best with fig-
urative language, searched for inspirational images to inspire us AND draft-
ed, edited, re-drafted and re-edited our very own autumn poetry. Topics
range from remembrance day to toffee apples and even if we are not all
exactly sure about our final piece of poetry, we are all sold a little bit more
on the idea that poetry has something to offer us… ‘interesting’, ‘easier to
understand’, ‘weird’!!
This week has seen us getting properly stuck in to Science and Forces. Miss
Longman’s favourite lesson was when she demonstrated how gravity works
on the water she has squirted into the air above the heads of the class – it’s
softer than an apple! We’ve played with air resistance using bun cases and
will be finishing off with a bit of friction work using rubbers, water (again) and
washing up liquid.

Year 4:
This month, in English we have completed our Sam’s duck work. We
have written some lovely descriptions of the duck and alternative
endings to the story. We have also started our poetry work and we
have written a haiku and a kenning. In our spelling work we have
been looking at the prefixes that mean ‘not’, sion endings and homo-
phones. We looked at the meaning and found other words that
match the spelling rule.
In Maths the children have been developing their knowledge of the
written methods for addition and subtraction in-
cluding carrying and exchanging. With Mrs
Bownass they have then been using this
knowledge and estimating and using the inverse
to check the calculations. We have also been
learning our times tables and about negative
numbers.
In History we have continued to learn about the
Anglo Saxon invaders, why they came to this
country, where they settled and place names
that we can find that have Anglo Saxon mean-
ings. We enjoyed learning about how they settled
over here and then created our own settlements
for the display. We have also started to look at
Sutton Hoo and what we can find out about the
Anglo Saxons from this evidence. A couple of
weeks before half term we had a visit from an
Anglo Saxon visitor who shared his knowledge
and artefacts. He was very impressed with the
knowledge that the children had about this peri-
od in our history. We will now move onto our next
invaders, the Vikings.
Science work has been continuing to investigate
sound and how we hear, looking at vibrations
and pitch.
RE has been about journeys and
journeys that we make in life.
In Art, the children have continued
to learn about the colour wheel
and have created some lovely art-
work using primary and secondary
colours and then organising the col-
ours into hot and cold. Some are on
display in the corridor if you get chance to look at parents evening.
In PE the children have enjoyed the basketball and circuit training,
showing a good amount of skill.
In Computing we have covered e-safety and sharing information on-
line and programming.
