Middle English - Talking and ListeningPublic Speaking: Using an Expressive VoiceWhile you were practising your persuasive speech, you may have been thinking about how touse your voice expressively in order to convince the audience. Some of the best orators (public speakers) in the world are actors. The playwright, WilliamShakespeare wrote many monologues and speeches in his plays which great actors still pridethemselves in performing. One such oration is Mark Antony’s funeral speech from the playJulius Caesar.Click on the link below to read and learn more about this speech. If you do not understandsome of Shakespeare’s language, there is a version in the document which ‘translates’ thespeech into modern English.

Friends, Romans, CountrymenNow read the text while listening to the piece being performed by renowned actor, DamianLewis.

Damian Lewis as Antony in Julius Caesar: 'Friends, Romans, countrymen' | Shakespear…

It’s Your Turn!Read the first 10 lines of the oration aloud.(Up to the line, “...and Brutus is an honourable man”)Read with as much emphasis, expression and exaggerated emotion as you can!

PD: Mindfulness: Creating a SoundmapThis afternoon we would like you to relax and replenish yourself by tuning in and listening tothe various soundscapes that are all around you. A soundscape is made up of all the differentsounds that you can hear around you - the natural sounds from living creatures andenvironmental sounds like rain and wind, and human sounds from people, vehicles andmachines.Do you ever take time to listen to the sounds in nature? Practise your skills of listening deeplyand try to identify what you hear by creating a visual soundmap. The more we listen, the morewe can understand the world around us. A sound map is a drawing of the sounds you hearwithin a landscape. You may hear:

■ bird calls and other animal sounds■ environmental sounds like wind in the treetops■ water flowing■ traffic and other human activities

After lunch try to find a place to sit where you can hear different types of sounds. It may be in

a garden, in a house, or next to an open window. Have a pencil and paper to sketch on. Draw

an X in the middle of your page to mark where you are sitting. As you listen, draw sounds that

you hear close by, nearer to the X and the ones further away, draw further away from the X.

Think about where the sound is coming from, to your right or left, in front, behind or above

you? What is making the sound?
