Dear Colleagues,

A huge thank you to the thousands of schools that worked with NFER over the last year, be it participating in a research project, trialling new resources or using our assessments and tools. Schools are key partners in all that we do, as we pursue our mission to use research insights to improve outcomes for learners.

Last year we launched NFER Classroom, through which we bring you the latest research, resources and guidance specifically for those working in schools. Thousands of practitioners have already benefited from our free short-read articles and downloadable guides, which we continue to make available on our Assessment Hub at www.nfer.ac.uk/assessment-hub.

We continue to grow our range of standardised tests, all of which are founded on the knowledge gained from developing assessments for over 70 years. We are excited to announce that our year 6 autumn and spring tests are currently available to pre-order for use in the autumn term from 2019 and spring term from 2020. We are also developing new assessment materials for use in the year 1 and year 2 spring terms from 2020.

These new materials complement our existing range of assessments for years 1-5 and will enable you to consistently monitor attainment and progress across key stage 1 and key stage 2. Our full range of tests is also supported by a free, time-saving online analysis tool to help you get even more from your data. Find out more at www.nfer.ac.uk/tools.

As we are a not-for-profit organisation, any purchase you make from NFER helps fund further research and developments to support positive change across education systems. We’ve also held our prices since 2015, to help your budgets go further.

We look forward to working with you in 2019.

Yours faithfully,

Gemma Aukett

Head of Product Strategy

“We’ve worked with NFER before on a research project and know that the organisation does an awful lot on evidence-based education. We were therefore confident in the reliability of the tests.” Mrs Alison Hawkins, Headteacher at Allendale Primary School.

Introducing reliable NFER Tests We use all the knowledge we have gained from developing assessments for over 70 years to ensure NFER Tests are of the highest standard. When schools choose standardised assessments to help them make judgements about pupil attainment and progress, it is important that the materials they use produce reliable and useful outcomes.

Here are five reasons why thousands of schools choose NFER Tests.

They have been standardised with 60,000 pupils to provide reliable national comparisons.

1. They were written for the current curriculum and provide appropriate content coverage.

2. They are engaging for pupils and provide an age-appropriate level of challenge.

3.

They are consistent in producing data that is accurate and robust.

4. They reflect the style and challenge of the national curriculum tests.

5.

NFER Tests for years 1–6 can be used at different points in the year to help monitor attainment and progress and to inform future teaching and learning.

All our assessments provide both standardised and age-standardised scores to benchmark pupil achievement against the performance of pupils nationally, and enable progress to be monitored across the year and from year-to-year. In addition, our reading and mathematics summer tests for years 1, 3, 4 and 5 provide reliable age-related expectations measures.

“NFER Tests enable us to assess children three times a year in the autumn, spring and summer terms. This data is used to inform mini-interventions, class teaching, or prompt teacher sessions around particular areas in order to address the needs of the school as a whole.”

Daniel Pring, Assistant Headteacher at Snodland CE Primary School

Spring for years 3–6*Spring term assessments help monitor progress throughout the academic year to identify strengths and weaknesses and inform next steps in teaching and learning.

Include diagnostic marking guidance to support analysis of common errors

Provide age-related expectations measures

Summer for years 1, 3, 4 and 5Summer term assessments help to summarise attainment and progress at the end of the year and can be used to provide a point from which to monitor progress across consecutive years.

Year 1 and 2 coming for spring

2020

Autumn for years 2–6* When used at the start of the autumn term, these assessments provide an on-entry assessment and a point from which to monitor progress.

When used during or at the end of the term they can be used to identify curriculum areas which need further teaching and learning and to provide a base from which to monitor continued progress.

“We looked at various providers, however, we liked the style of NFER Tests. Being similar to the national tests, we thought they would be good preparation for the children.”

Alison Hawkins, Headteacher at Allendale Primary School

Our key stage 1 assessments are developed by researchers with teaching backgrounds and expertise in developing assessments. They have been through extensive informal trialling and benefited from discussions with teachers about how best to present questions. This thorough process ensures that the assessment materials are both appealing to young children and also provide you with accurate and useful data.

Key stage 1 assessmentsWe have developed a new range of child-friendly assessments for use in the year 1 summer term and year 2 autumn term. These paper-based assessments will enable you to:

• identify strengths and areas that may require additional support

• monitor attainment and progress

• build familiarity and confidence in children taking written assessments.

The format of the year 1 materials takes into consideration the young age of the children and includes scaffolding for you to provide pupils with extensive support. The year 2 materials more closely follow the format of the national curriculum tests to help build familiarity and confidence ahead of the end-of-year tests.

The Winter Fair

Every winter, Bonzo’s Fair came to Amber’s town. Amber never missed it.

One afternoon, Mum collected her from school and they walked to the fair.

“Let’s hurry,” said Amber.

As they got closer, Amber saw the fair’s lights twinkling like stars in the night sky. She gasped in wonder. They looked magical.

Key stage 1 teacher guidesTeacher guides are available for each key stage 1 year group and subject and provide comprehensive guidance for administering and marking the assessment.

Given the age of the children and the fact that this may be their first formal assessment, our key stage 1 teacher guides include an even greater level of support for those setting and marking the assessments than in the key stage 2 teacher guides.

Below is an example of the guidance included in the year 1 reading teacher guide.

The year 2 teacher guides include valuable teacher support, but are less extensive than for year 1 as pupils are expected to work more independently.

Teacher guides also include free access to our NFER Tests Analysis Tool to help you interpret your results (see pages 16 and 17).

Teacher scripts are provided to ensure the assessment is delivered in a consistent manner.

Teacher guide pictures are in line with those in the pupil booklets to help support children in navigating the assessment.

“The tests allow us to have an independent evaluation of the children, in addition to our own teacher evaluation, and they give a good benchmark of attainment across the year groups.”

James Allen, St Joachim’s Catholic Primary School

Key stage 2 assessmentsOur full range of assessments has been mapped to the national curriculum test frameworks and standardised with over 60,000 pupils to provide reliable standardised scores and age-standardised scores, enabling you to:

• benchmark your results nationally

• reliably monitor attainment and progress

• plan future teaching and learning.

Our reading, mathematics and grammar and punctuation tests for years 3, 4 and 5 are available for use in the autumn, spring and summer terms. Spelling tests can be used at any time of the year at your discretion. Daddy Fell into the Pond

by Alfred Noyes

Everyone grumbled. The sky was grey.We had nothing to do and nothing to say.We were nearing the end of a dismal day.And there seemed to be nothing beyond,

Then Daddy fell into the pond!

And everyone’s face grew merry and bright,And Timothy danced for sheer delight.‘Give me the camera, quick, oh quick!

He’s crawling out of the duckweed!’ Click!

Then the gardener suddenly slapped his knee,And doubled up, shaking silently,

And the ducks all quacked as if they were daft,And it sounded as if the old drake* laughed.Oh, there wasn’t a thing that didn’t respond

When Daddy fell into the pond!

Diagnostic guidance to help inform teaching and learningDiagnostic commentaries are included in the years 3, 4 and 5 mathematics and reading spring term teacher guides, and in the years 3, 4 and 5 grammar and punctuation, and spelling teacher guides for all terms. Diagnostic guidance is also included in the year 6 autumn and spring teacher guides for all subjects, to help identify gaps in learning and support teaching and intervention in this crucial year.

These commentaries are provided for test questions for which pupils in the large nationally representative sample systematically made similar errors or answered in similar ways and/or demonstrated widespread misunderstanding or misconceptions. This diagnostic guidance helps you to anticipate the types of response pupils are likely to give in order to inform future teaching.

Below is an example of the type of accompanying guidance you will find in the diagnostic spelling teacher guides.

Teacher guides also include free access to our NFER Tests Analysis Tool to help you interpret your results (see pages 16 and 17 for more details).

Error identification in marking guidance shows common errors.

“Class teachers find the question level analysis report particularly useful for identifying gaps and informing teaching as it is really detailed, very clear and focused”

Ms Joanne Robinson, Assistant Headteacher at Netherton CE Primary School.

School case studyMs Joanne Robinson, Assistant Headteacher at Netherton CE Primary School – November 2018. Netherton CE Primary School first used NFER Tests in summer 2018, after finding that non-standardised tests did not meet their assessment needs. Assistant Headteacher, Joanne Robinson explains why she turned to NFER as her assessment provider of choice.

“In the spring term 2018 we decided to look for a robust suite of tests after finding that our current assessment solution was not producing consistent data. We chose NFER as we could see there was so much evidence and research behind the tests. We know that NFER are highly credible and therefore the tests would be rigorous and robust.”

Like many schools, Netherton CE Primary School were looking for standardised tests that were age-appropriate and provided them with meaningful data. Netherton CE Primary School were delighted with the outcomes of NFER Tests. Ms Robinson explains:

“We found the content of the NFER Tests really thorough and they accurately reflect what is being taught in the national curriculum. There is consistency in the way the tests have been put together and we found the level of challenge to be just right. We love that they reflect the style and challenge of the national curriculum tests and that the results from our NFER Tests were an accurate comparison to the results in the national assessments.”

Ms Robinson explains how she uses the NFER Tests Analysis Tool to identify gaps in pupil learning and inform teaching.

“We used the summer tests at the end of June, prior to a two week transition period where teachers have their new classes. During that period, it’s vital that the teachers understand gaps in learning in order to help move the pupils along. Being able to instantly generate a series of reports from the online tool makes this easy. Class teachers find the question analysis report particularly useful for identifying these gaps as it is really detailed, very clear and focused. It’s also useful to be able to hover over the standardised progress graph and make a direct comparison between pupils’ scores on two different assessments.”

As well as using the results to inform teaching and learning in her school, Ms Robinson acknowledges the value of the online analysis tool in school progress meetings and in sharing valuable knowledge of pupil performance between the schools’ teaching staff.

“I have been able to add all staff to the tool and give them access so that everyone can see whether we are on track with where we want to be. We use the tool in our progress meetings and bring the results up on the interactive board so we can all look at the outcomes. We use NFER Tests as a basis from which we move forward with our teaching.”
