Materials and their properties Imagine you are an explorer, travelling the world to discover new materials. Would you be able to wear the same clothes everywhere you went? Design an outfit for each of these places:

- North Pole - Sahara Desert - Amazon Rainforest

Draw your outfits and label which materials you could use to make each item. Make sure you include: a top, a jacket, trousers/shorts and shoes.

Make sure you keep reading for at least 15 minutes each day. Each week we will put a different set of activities that you can do around your reading book.

These will be based on the Vipers skills of: vocabulary, inference (reading between the lines), predict, explain, retrieve (find the answers in the text) and summarise You could always post a book review in the Home Learning folder on Showbie or on the Thames 5T facebook page too!

Some tools to help you with the reading tasks above:

Writing

If an apostrophe is used to show that something belongs to someone, we call that an apostrophe for possession. E.g. Mr Ratcliffe’s car

If an apostrophe is used to show missing letters from

two words put into one, we call that apostrophe for contraction (contract means to make smaller) E.g. can not becomes can’t do not becomes don’t

SPaG Help

An adverb adds more information to the verb e.g. he was shouting deafeningly. A preposition tells us where the noun is, e.g by the water’s edge, A complex sentence is one that has a main clause and a subordinate clause…..

- The main clause is the main thing that you are trying to say in the sentence, for example ‘Emily could control the weather.’

- The subordinate clause is extra information e.g. ‘Just by thinking it, Emily could change the weather’ or ‘when her feelings changed, Emily could change the weather.

- If the subordinate clause (the extra information) comes at the beginning of a sentence, you need to put a comma after it. If it comes after the main part of the sentence then you don’t need a comma.

Story starter! Can you complete the story? Ever since she was little, Emily could control the weather. Whenever she felt sad it started to rain… Sentence Challenge Can you include a complex sentence containing a main clause and a subordinate clause? Can you separate the clauses using a comma? Can you use one of the following conjunctions to link your clauses: but, or, yet, so, because, and… - Emily was feeling extremely sad, so - She was angry that she had been left out, and - Being outside often cheered Emily up, yet Sick Sentences These sentences are ‘sick’ and need help to get better. Can you help? (you could do this by up-levelling the vocabulary or extending the sentences with extra information.) 1 . Emily held the umbrella. 2 . Emily looked up at the cloud. 3 . Rain was coming down. 4 . She was sad. Question Time What causes the weather to change in the story? What about in reality? Can you think of different types of weather and match them up with different feelings that Emily experiences? For example, it is sunny when she is happy. What is your favourite type of weather and why? Do Emily’s powers work without the umbrella? Do Emily’s parents have similar powers do you think? What problems/benefits are there to Emily’s powers?

12 Times table challenge! Last week we asked you to work on your 6 times tables. This week it is the 12 (because the answers to the 12 times tables will be double the answers to the 6 times table! Try it out for yourself!)

Your challenge this week is to learn the 12 times table so that you can answer questions on them quickly. Think about what you could do to help you:

● For example, you could write them out a few times to help you memorise them. ● Then look at them, read aloud and repeat. ● You could then fill in the answers in order to help you memorise them. ● Then write them down out of order and see if you can still fill in the answers. ● Ask an adult to keep asking you 6 times tables questions throughout the week. It

doesn’t matter if you don’t get there straight away. Keep trying and you will improve!

Keep going on TT Rockstars as this will help your speed and accuracy. Go on to www.timetables.co.uk They have loads of activities and interactive games to help you learn your 12s in a fun way!

For example, in the photograph, the cakes are arranged in an array of 3 rows of 2. The multiplication fact for this array would be 3 x 2 = 6 How else could the cakes be arranged? If you bake the 12 cakes shown in the recipe on the next page, can you take a picture or draw all the different arrays you can make out of the cakes and then write a multiplication sentence to go with it. E.g. 12 x 1 6 x 2 etc.
