Spelling
There will be a new spelling list each week. This will be linked to a
new rule we are looking at.
E.g. symbol the ‘i’ sound written as a y.
Spellings will sometimes be sent home for home learning, but not
always.
Spelling Learning Sequence:
Some Year 5 English Expectations:
Reading: in writing narratives, considering how authors have developed
characters and settings in what pupils have read, listened to or seen
performed
Writing: ensuring correct subject and verb agreement when using singular
and plural, distinguishing between the language of speech and writing
and choosing the appropriate register
SPaG: Year 5/6 Spelling list; semicolons, relative clauses, modal verbs,
passive verbs and much more.
Mathematics
The new curriculum aims to develop ‘deep learning’. This means spending
more time on fewer topics.
Children should now develop their understanding of their year group’s
objectives rather than move onto the next year’s objectives.
Mathematics
Fluency: in the fundamentals of mathematics,
through varied and frequent practise with
increasingly complex concepts over time.
Reasoning: developing an argument, justification
or proof using mathematical language.
Problem solving: applying their mathematics to a range of problems with increasing sophistication.
The curriculum emphasises ‘mastery’ in one method rather than an awareness of lots of different
strategies.

Growth Mindset
How important are you?
REALLY IMPORTANT!
Parents/Carers are the greatest teachers.
What can you do to help?
➢ Read and discuss books with your child regularly. The Reading Race!
Some good questions to ask when reading:
What do you think might happen next? Can you summarise what’s happened so far?
What does (specific word) mean? What have you enjoyed so far?
What are the similarities between this book and the book we’ve just read?
➢ Practise times tables and division facts.
➢ Get children to reason their maths answers. How have you got that answer? How do you know?
➢ Bring maths to life! Let children see maths in the real world: money, weight/mass, measuring etc
➢ Ensure children are completing home learning. Given out on Thursday, return on Tuesday.
➢ Make sure you bring your children to school!
Any Questions?
I have an open door policy. Any questions or concerns
at any time, feel free to chat to me at the start or end
of the day.
Let’s work together to make your children the best
version of themselves!
