Year 5 and 6 Maths Activities Week 15th June
This week we are having a Theme Park Week. You will design and plan your own theme park, within
a given budget! This project will also run in English where you will be creating persuasive adverts and
magazine reviews. In addition, you will be sticking to the theme for your afternoon work!
Activity 1 and Activity 2: (these two activities should be spread over two days)
Do Maths before English!
Read through the following slides to learn about what you will need to include in your theme park.
As you go along, remember to keep track of your budget. By the end of today’s activity, you should
have a first draft plan (see squared sheet at end of slides – remember 1 sq = 50m sq) and a building a
budget plan (see sheet at end of slides).
Mild Spicy Hot
• Using the squared paper, design a plan for your theme park.
• You must have 3 distinct areas
• Make sure you use the correct scaled area for each item. Remember each cm sq = 50m2
• Have you included all the suggested amenities?
• Once you have drawn your plan, complete the Building a Budget sheet.
• Have you kept your building costs under £4 million? If not, amend your plan.
As Mild +
• Make sure you include a 50m safety border around each item in your park
• Calculate your costings. How much have you over/under spent by?
As Spicy +
• What area will cost the most to build?
• How might you regain some of the costs from possible income? (hint: what is surrounding your expensive rides?)
Activity 3:
Classroom/Home Olympics!
To get you in the mood for fun and fast rides, read the instructions then watch the video:
Stand behind your chair and run on the spot. When the driver jumps in their sled,
sit down in your chair. Lean left when the driver steers left, lean right to go right.
Lean forward to go faster and lean back at the end to slow down.

Running costs for your theme park:
Today you will be calculating the estimated running costs for your theme park. You will need to
consider various behind the scenes costs. What might these be?
Read through the slides below before completing the Estimated Running Costs sheet (at end of
slides).

With support
• Look at your park plan and input details on
Estimated Running Costs sheet
• Using column addition and subtraction, calculate overall running costs.
• As Mild +
• What is your biggest expense?
• What type of rides would you need to install to lower the running costs?
As Spicy +
• Calculate how much of your original business loan will be needed for first two weeks of operation
• How could you reduce running costs without reducing the integrity of the park?
Activity 4:
Working out entrance fees for your theme park
Work through the slides, making notes (if needed) before completing the Working Out Entrance
Fees sheet. You will need to create more than one costing before you are happy with your
predicted profit and ticket prices etc.
Mild Spicy Hot
With support Calculate daily running costs
• Make predictions for visiting adults and children
• Decide on potential ticket cost
• Calculate potential revenue from predicted visitors
• Subtract running costs
As Mild +
• Calculate and compare two potential ticket prices
• What is the difference between costing scenarios?
• Which is the most realistic/value for money?
• Could you offer an incentive?
As Spicy + (calculate x 2 ticket prices)
• Include costings for possible family ticket price
• What might the percentage in profit be for each scenario?
Activity 5: (After English)
Annual Profit: Your theme park has now been open for 12 whole months! Wow! That time just flew
by! Now it is time to work out your annual profit, see how effective your marketing was and
compare your profits with other theme parks in the class (or with friends!).
Read through the slides, while keeping the Annual Profit activity sheet and your proposed figures for
the park to hand. REMEMBER RUNNING COSTS!!!
Complete the sheet for each month’s profit before totalling for your total profit.
Finally, share your profit with the class/friends/family. How could you have improved your business?
Could you have advertised differently to make an impact of profit? Did you target your customers
accurately?
You will be using percentages today so if you have forgotten, or are not sure, have a watch of the
video:

Remember to find 1% divide by 100
To find 10% divide by 10
To find 50% divide by 2 (to find half)
What might you do to find 23%
