Year 4 Home Learning Monday 8 th June to Friday 12 th June Hello Everyone. I hope you’ve all had a lovely week. I’ve been busy in school, preparing for the return of some of the Year 1 children next week. It was nice to see some familiar friendly faces and to reconnect with some of the staff after such a long time. I spotted some of the lovely self portraits you have sent in. They looks fabulous on the fencing around school. A friend of mine has been sending me daily videos of a little hedgehog that has set up residence in their garden. It has been fascinating watching the footage from his ‘hedgehog cam’. It reminded me of our badger cam project earlier this year! Here are a couple of photographs from the wildlife camera, of our prickly friend. Finally, I thought I’d mention ‘The Six Badges of Summer’ from the BBC. It’s something we will be having a go at in our house. Throughout the Summer CBBC and Cbeebies will be giving you the chance to get involved and win 6 Blue Peter badges. https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/ 52893942 Follow this link to find out more about this exciting new initiative. Have a brilliant week guys! Will be thinking about you all! Mrs Fellows

The Science and Topic grids for the half term are attached to this weeks learning. There are key questions at the top to guide the children through the unit of work and lots of web links to help with subject knowledge, practical ideas, creative activities and further research enquiries to keep the children engaged during this half term. I have also included key vocabulary, which the children should be encouraged to use.

In addition to this I have included a knowledge mat for both Science and Topic, to be used as a tool for their learning. The idea of these grids is to allow the children to independently explore/investigate the learning at their own pace. They aren’t expected to complete every single activity on here, but the more they have a go at the better.

Science and Topic Grids

Key vocabulary for the children to use.

Subject knowledge they need to complete the tasks.

Practical activity to support the learning. Everything you need for them should be easy to find in your home.

Other ways to apply and extend their learning.

Help! My neighbours keep playing loud music and I can’t get to sleep. Can you invent something to help me muffle the sound? https://youtu.be/93Sa3BKHWZs

Practical experiment. Making rice jump (to do) https://youtu.be/37csXse35YQ

String telephone (to do)https://youtu.be/3yqB2KFwJCo

Straw pan-pipes (to do)https://youtu.be/BaymX3qJRbQ

Ear Wax (to watch)https://youtu.be/FWOlF0ObIdU(Don’t put anything in your ears)

Use everything you now know about sound to help you design and make something to help block out the sound. How will you investigate this? Make a plan. How will you carry out the investigation? Make notes or draw a diagram. What will you need? Once you have carried out your investigation work, take a photo of your design and send it to me.

Applying your learning Go on a sound walk. What is making each sound? Can you hear high or low sounds? Can you hear loud or quiet sounds?

Can you make your telephone work around a corner? What happens if you tie a knot in the middle of your piece of string? Why do you think this is?

Generally, the shorter, tighter or thinner the object is, the higher the pitch of the sound will be. The longer, looser or thicker the object is, the lower the pitch of the sound will be. Try explaining this using your knowledge of vibrations.

Draw or make the ear and label it.

Researching further Research sound pollution. Who discovered sound waves? I have a question… How do we know young babies can hear?

When should we try and muffle sound from travelling to our ears?

Find out more aboutnoise laws in the UK.

Creative links Make a sound A-Z Be a science expert and make a video to explain this to others.

Make your own musical instrument or have a go at beat boxing.

Making a model of the ear. (Play-doh, junk modelling, lego etc)

Make a video advertisement of your amazing new design. How would you persuade people to buy it? .
