  • Unit and Non Unit Fractions

    denominator

    numerator

  • For this question the circle has been divided

into 5 equal parts. Look at the numerator of

the fraction to help you know how many parts

of the circle you should shade.

Count the total number of cupcakes to help

you with the denominator of your fractions in

    this next question.

To help you find your numerator count the

cupcakes you are interested in after reading

the question e.g. the ones that only have icing

  • I will go through this question as an example. Then try b and c

    yourself.

The question wants to know if 3/5 of the shapes have 4 sides

so we first need to count the total number of shapes to find our

    denominator.

There are 5 shapes so our denominator is ?/5

To find our numerator we need to reread the question to see

which particular shapes we are interested in… shapes that

    have 4 sides.

3 shapes have 4 sides so our numerator is 3. When we put our

numerator and denominator together, our fraction is 3/5

The statement ‘3/5 of the shapes have 4 sides’ is true.

  • A Whole

First start by counting the total number of counters

    to find your denominator.

Then count how many are yellow to find your

    numerator.

Try the next question on your own

  • To find out the fraction of blue and yellow

counters. Find the denominator (the total amount

    of counters)

Then count how many are either blue or yellow to

    find the numerator.

What fraction of this shape is shaded?

The numerator and denominator in this fraction are the

    same number.

When the numerator and denominator are the same, it is

    equal to a whole.

  • Tenths

When we write this as a fraction we write it like this 2

    10

All the squares below have been separated into ten equal

parts. For each of the squares write the fraction that has been

    shaded.

    ten

    2

  • Shade in the correct amount of squares to show the fraction in

    each question

  • Count in Tenths

    Asha is counting in tenths…
