Pupil Home Access Login – 5 a day TV Username: clifton-primary-school-b128ly-home Password: LZYR6bVd Welcome to week 2 of home learning. As teachers we’ve worked really hard to make sure that despite the fact that we cannot meet in school face to face currently, this booklet contains all the lessons that we would have been learning this week. Use this to guide your learning as you wish. Try to complete as much as you can each day, but you don’t do it all in one go. Give yourselves regular breaks! As your teachers we want to say a huge well done for adapting to this different style of learning once again. We are so proud of how well you manage all of the changes that are happening this academic year. We can’t wait until we can you all back in school. For now, stay home and stay safe. From the year 3 team Mrs Allen, Mr Sawyer, Mr Reid and Mrs Cook.
Top Tips for this week’s remote learning: Maths: The 4 and 8 times tables Continue to use the links to watch the tutorials. You can watch them as many times as you like to help you complete the worksheets for each lesson. Remember, you can rewind the videos if there is something you do not understand and you can also pause them to give you time to complete the work! There are Success Criteria at the top of each maths lesson. If you are stuck, look back at these to help you. English: Pandora’s box. This week you will be using the technique of Imitating. This follows on from text mapping (drawing out the story using symbols and then learning it word for word verbally) Once your child is confident that they can re tell the story of Pandora’s box off by heart then then can start to write it out from memory one section at a time (opening, build up, problem, resolution and then ending) This technique is the building blocks for creating their own story in the coming weeks. Science: This week in science, we are beginning our topic on animals and humans. We being by looking at the different types of skeletons. You will be categorising the skeletons by looking at pictures and putting the animals into a table based on which skeleton they have. Whole class reading: You will be learning a new Greek myth, the story of Perseus and Medusa. You will be using your comprehension techniques to answer questions about the text. Keep an eye on our twitter accounts to watch My Sawyer reading the story aloud. IPC and Computing: our topic for this half term is based upon the theme of ‘Chocolate’ both require you to use a computer or a laptop to research how chocolate is made and then to use that information to create a digital poster about it. If you don’t have access to a computer then just use a piece of paper. Hopefully you can
yourselves to a little chocolate snack at the end of the lesson, all in the name of learning! Hehe. P.E: Please use the 5 – a – day website, or you may want to create your own challenges! Mr Sawyer is a big fan of running, while Mrs Allen is a big yoga fan. Keep an eye on our Twitter pages also. Parents we would love to hear how your children are doing and this is a great way to do so. @TheMrReid @Mrs_Allen01 @mrsawyer3s Maths 1: LO: To divide by 4 Do Now Complete the number line 4, 8, 12, __, __, __, __, __

Pandora’s Box
Long ago in Ancient Greece, Epimetheus longed for a wife. The gods sent a woman called Pandora. They married and were given a gift of a box by the god Zeus. However, they were told never to open the box. Pandora was curious but she did as she had promised.
Pandora couldn’t stand it. She put the key in the lock and turned it. She quickly locked the box again. She did this 3 times but she thought she would go mad! She took a deep breath, closed her eyes and lifted the lid. She opened her eyes and peered into the box.
Zeus had packed the box full of all the evils he could think of. Out they came like tiny moths, laughing and hissing. They surrounded Pandora and she was terror-stricken. Epimetheus was angry with Pandora. Pandora slammed the lid shut.
Pandora could hear a voice in the box, pleading to be let out. They opened the lid and Pandora saw a tiny creature at the bottom of the box. The creature was named ‘Hope’ and had hidden in the box. “Wherever you see trouble, I will be there,” she said and flew into the night.
Pandora sobbed. She had released pain and suffering upon the world and the gods were furious with her. Pandora became patient and earnest to repay the world for her terrible mistake.
Spellings for this week.
Spelling Rule.
Adding suffixes beginning with vowel letters to words of more than one syllable. If the last syllable of a word is stressed and ends with one consonant letter which has just one vowel letter before it, the final consonant letter is doubled before any ending beginning with a vowel letter is added.
To help you understand this week's spelling rule remember:
• A suffix is a unit of meaning that is added to the end of a word to make a new word with a slightly different meaning. The "ed" in "wanted" is a suffix.
• Vowel letters are: a, e, i, o, u. • A syllable is made of a single vowel sound with or without
surrounding consonants. • Consonants are a sound in a language made by stopping or
restricting the flow of air through the mouth. The sounds represented by the letters "d," "k," "b," "s," and "m" are examples of consonants.

Now that we’ve done the storyboard, we are going to begin to imitate the story. This means we are going to write the story out in our own words using our boxing up method (writing each part over the next few days). We are writing from memory, just write what you can remember, but use the actions from last week to help you.

Reading 1. This week we are reading the Greek Myth of Perseus and the Gorgons Head. As you read the text , underline any unkown words in preparation for your reading challenge. Perseus and the Gorgon’s Head. King Acrisius of Argos was a worried man. “Worried.... I’m out of my mind.” he said. He had been warned that his daughter, Danae, would have a son who would kill him. Is the oracle always right? That’s what I want to know , he thought. So when Danae bore a baby boy, named Perseus, Acrisius put them both in a wooden chest and pushed the vessel out to sea. Sorry, but its for my own good thought Acrisius. For days the chest tossed on the waves. Finally it washed up on the shores of Seriphos where Dictys, the brother of of King Polydectes, found it. When he opened the chest , he was amazed to see Danae and Perseus inside. The grumpy King allowed them to stay in the palace. Perseus grew up strong and handsome . Meanwhile, the King fell in love with Danae. He proposed to her at every opportunity. “For the zillionth time, will you marry me?” The king asked Danae. “NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! NO!” Danae replied. And at every opportunity Danae refused him. “I bet you’d marry me if that drip of a son wasn’t around to protect you.” said Polydects. So he plotted to get rid of Perseus by sending him on a deadly mission. Still Danae refused to marry the King. “ I don’t want you to go, but I can’t marry old Poly.”explained Danae. “Don’t worry, just don’t give in. I’ll soon be home.” explained Perseus. So Polydectes sent Perseus to fetch the head of the Gorgon, Medusa. Medusa was one of three monstrous sisters, with brass hands and golden wings, whose glance could turn men and beasts to stone. But
Perseus was not afraid. He travelled for many days but found no sign of Medusa. I don’t really know where to look next he thought, I know I will sleep on it. Wearily, he lay down to rest. As he slept, the goddess Athene came to him , bringing him a shield in which to look at Medusa so that he would not be turned to stone. The next day he set off again, but there was still no sign of Medusa. That night, the god Hermes visited Perseus. He gave him a sickle with which to cut off Medusa’s head. That should do the job Perseus thought to himself. Then Hermes told Perseus to go to the Grey Ones. The three sisters had only one eye and one tooth between them. Preseus went to Mount Atlas, where the Grey Ones lived. Creeping up behind them , he snatched their single eye and tooth. The Grey Ones screamed for them to be returned and Perseus agreed, in exchange for information. So they told him he must seek out the Ocean Nymphs. Then Perseus returned the eye and the tooth and went on. Upon reaching the ocean, he called to the Nymphs. They hated Medusa and were glad to assist Perseus. They gave him winged sandals, so he could fly, a helmet to make him completely invisible, and a bag in which to put Medusa’s deadly head. Then they directed him to where the Gorgons lived. There, Perseus heard their rumbling , growling snores. Looking into his shield, he beheld a fearful sight. Fearlessly, Perseus raised his sickle high …....... and with one mighty stroke, sliced off Medusa’s head. YUK! I must keep my eyes closed he told himself as he put Medusa’s head in the bag. As he leapt into the air, Medusa’s sisters woke. “Wake up !He’s got Medusa!” one of them yelled. “I’ve lost my head,” sobbed Medusa. Quickly, Perseus donned the helmet and instantly vanished from their sight. His journey home was not an easy one. But, after a year away, he arrived at Seriphos. Perseus found his mother hiding from King Polydectes in the temple. “ I’m up here. Poly is still trying to force me to marry him.” said his mother.
“Don’t worry, Mum. Medusa and I will sort him out!” replied Perseus. So he went on to the palace. Polydectes was convinced that Perseus had long since been turned to stone. The King was horrified to see him alive. But before he could speak, Perseus pulled out Medusa’s head. Its gaze immediately turned the King to stone. Perseus then rescued his mother and, before leaving the island crowned Dictys the new King of Seriphos. They sailed for Argos where, later, Perseus accidentally killed King Acrisius , as the oracle had predicted. Challenge .

They sailed for Argos
where, later, Perseus accidentally killed King Acrisius , as the oracle had predicted. Challenge Now you have read the myth, your task is to summarise (retell) the myth in no more than 100 words.
