Monday – English

LO: To explore the features of a poem.

This week, we are going to create a simile poem.

These are all examples of simile poems. Can you match the animals to the simile poems?

Claws as sharp as daggers,

Teeth like deadly pearls.

Orange fur like fire,

Sneaking silently like a ninja.

As colourful as a rainbow,

Flying as high as a kite,

Fluttering as softly as a snowflake,

With wings like fire burning bright.

Eyes like diamonds,

Cold as ice,

Teeth like daggers,

Searching for its next victim.

They were describing a butterfly, a tiger and a lion. The poem tells us about the animals using similes to describe their different features.

Teeth like deadly pearls.

Sneaking silently like a ninja.

As colourful as a rainbow,

Flying as high as a kite,

Words that rhyme have the same sound.'Cheese' and 'peas' both have the same sound. You can write rhyming poems by using pairs or groups of words that use the same sounds.

We found out about similes last week.

A simile describes something by comparing it to something else, using like or as:The snake moved like a ripple on a pond.It was as slippery as an eel.Jess is as graceful as a gazelle.

LO: To explore the features of poems.

Fierce, ferocious, fearless,Eyes shine like glaring lights,Prowling like a tiger through desolate streets,King of the dark, lonely nights.

Brave, bold, brutal,A roar like an earthquake,Screeching in the darkness,Before the dawn starts to break.

Sneering, snarling, selfish,His claws as sharp as glass,Stalking past the sleeping houses,Waiting for the night to pass.

This is called a verse. Each of these verses has four lines.

This is one line of a poem.

LO: To perform my poem.

When we perform a poem, we can show what the poem is about by the way we use our voice and our body.

Have a look at the video below to find out the different ways that we can perform a poem.

Your task is to perform the poem you created yesterday. Think carefully about how you will use your voice. Remember to take note of the punctuation. Think about actions too. If you’re Night Jaguar are you slinking across the floor as you talk. If you’re Kukulkan are you flapping your wings through the poem.

You can perform it to your family members or, if you have permission, record it

and send it to your teacher!

LO: To create your own homophone game.

Your task today is to create your own game using homophones. Here a few ideas to help you:

• Homophone snap. Create your own homophone cards. Divide the cards between two players and when you put the homophones down say ‘SNAP’. If you say snap, you have to explain the different meanings of your homophones.

• Homophone memory game. Create your own homophone cards. Place them down in front of you and another player. Both do your best to memorise where the cards are. Now turn over the cards you think are matching. If you get the matching cards, you have to explain the different meanings of your homophones or use them in a sentence.

• Question and answer homophone cards. You write the questions on one card and the answers on another. E.g. The opposite to day. The person playing the game has to find the word that matches to the question, choosing the right homophone!

Here are some online examples that could you help you or you can print off and play with!
