Year 2 – Writing week beginning 22.06.20
Welcome to our writing journey…The facts of the Olympics!
This week we will be continuing our two week writing journey into
creating a fact file about the Olympics. We will be using the book
‘The Story of the Olympics’ by Richard Bassey as inspiration.
Remember we have been studying this book in Guided Reading so we
know a lot about its content already.
Like at school, we need to know what we are writing, who we are
writing it for and why. Below is your writing journey explained.
Purpose: You are writing to inform.
Audience: You will be writing to the St James teachers.
Form: You will be writing a fact file.
Effect: Your writing will need to interest your readers.
Monday 22nd June 2020
LO: To understand and create captions.
A main feature that can be spotted in many fact files are pictures.
When using pictures within fact files we need to use captions
alongside them. Today we will be learning what captions are and why
we use them before we create our own.
What are captions?
A caption is one or two sentences that are written about what is
happening in a picture. For example:
Usain Bolt crosses the finish line in record time and wins the 100m
sprint.
Why do we use captions?
We use captions in fact files in order to understand what the
picture means against the information in the text. We need to make
sure our reader understands why the picture is in the fact file and
what it is about.
Task 1
For our 1st task today we will be matching captions to the correct
picture. Remember a caption explains what is going on in a photo.
(Marking sheet at the end of today’s work)
Tom Daley displays the
British flag as he wins the
Bronze in diving.
Usain Bolt celebrates with
his signature pose as he
wins the 100m sprint.
The cyclists race to cross
the finishing line first.
Serena Williams wins the
Gold during the London
2012 Olympics after
beating Sharapova.
Task 2
For our 2nd task today we will be creating our own captions for the
photos given to you below. Remember a caption explains what is going
on in a photo.
Challenge time: To create captions.
For our challenge today I would like you to create pictures you will
use in your fact file. You can either use the computer to find
pictures or draw your own pictures. After you’ve chosen/created the
pictures for your fact file, I would like you to create your own
captions for them.

LO: To plan a coherent fact file.
Today we will be planning our fact file. Remember the more you plan
today, the more it will help you with your writing tomorrow. To help
with your planning you will need your vocabulary work, your title and
subheadings, your research and your captions.
Task 1
For our first task today we are going to add our title and
subheadings into our planning grid. Place the title at the top and your
subheadings into the boxes.
See Miss Matthews’ example:
Your turn!
Olympic Diving
How it Started Interesting Facts
Significant People History of the Sport
Task 2
For our second task we will mind map around each subheading box
about what main points we want to include in our writing for that
subject.
See Miss Matthews’ example:
Your turn!
Summer Olympics 1904.
St. Louis
It was
known as
fancy
diving.
George
Sheldon:
United States.
Won Gold in
the first
Olympics.
Wu Minxia. Won 7
medals (5 gold)
between 2004-2016.
The springboard and
platform events have been
included since the
1908 Olympic Games in
London.
Since the
Stockholm Games
in 1912, women
have taken part in
the diving events.
Men dive from a 27 metre platform
while women dive from a 20 metre
platform.
A dive from a
27 metre
platform
takes 3 – 3.5
seconds.

LO: To write a coherent fact file.
Today we are going to begin to write our fact file. Today we will
focus on writing the first two paragraphs of our fact file. To help
write your fact file you will need your plan, your work on
apostrophes, your work on compound and complex sentences and your
research. We will be adding our captions into our writing on Friday.
To help to see what we expect from your writing please see the grid
below. I have split the grid into different parts to show what we
expect from all of you, what we expect from most of you if you are
pushing yourself harder and what we expect from some of you that
will really be challenging yourselves.
The expectations for all must be met!
What we expect from everyone’s writing
To write at least 2 sentences for each paragraph.
To use your capital letters and full stops in the right
place.
Spell words phonetically correct.
Check that the Year 1 and 2 words are spelt correctly.
What we expect from children who are pushing themselves
harder…
Use ‘and’, ‘but’, ‘or’ and ‘so’ to create compound
sentences.
Use ‘when’, ‘because’, ‘if’, ‘that’ to create complex
sentences.
To use higher level vocabulary relating to the Olympics.
To use possessive apostrophes.
What we expect from children who are challenging themselves…
Think about how you make your reader feel.
Evaluate if you have interested or entertained the
reader.
Now you know the expectations we have for your writing here is
something to help you with your vocabulary.
The link below takes you to a website that lists further vocabulary
that links to the Olympics.

Here are also the word banks for coordinating and subordinating
conjunctions to help you with writing compound and complex
sentences.

Now we have read all of the expectations and reminded ourselves of
the different features we have learnt about let’s begin to write our
first paragraph.
See Miss Matthews’ example:
Olympic Diving
How it Started
Diving first introduced into the official programme of the Summer
Olympic Games in 1904 at the games in St. Louis and has been
included ever since. When diving was introduced into the games, it
was known as fancy diving. It was known as fancy diving because of
the stunts performed during the routine.
Now you have written your first paragraph it’s time to read through
your paragraph and edit anything you need to improve upon.
Here is a way you can proofread your work and essentials you need
to look for while proofreading…
See Miss Matthews’ example of editing:

Now time for the second paragraph!
See Miss Matthews’ example:
The history of the sport
Two key events in the history of Olympic diving took place in 1908
and 1912. In 1908, during the London Olympic Games, the
springboard and platform events were included into the programme
of the sporting category. The second key event took place in 1912
during the Olympic Games in Stockholm. The Olympic Games in 1912
saw the introduction of women into the sporting event.
Now you have written your second paragraph it’s time to read
through your paragraph and edit anything you need to improve upon.

Tomorrow we will continue our writing and write our next two
paragraphs.

LO: To write a coherent narrative.
Today we are going to continue writing our fact file after yesterday
where we wrote the first two paragraphs. Before we start let’s just
remind ourselves of the expectations and features that will support
your writing.
The expectations for all must be met!
What we expect from everyone’s writing
To write at least 2 sentences for each paragraph.
To use your capital letters and full stops in the right
place.
Spell words phonetically correct.

Let’s write our third paragraph!
See Miss Matthews’ example:
Significant people
The first significant person that you need introducing to is George
Sheldon, a representative of the United States. He is significant to
the competition due to his win of the first Gold medal in the first
Olympics. The second significant diver that needs introducing is Wu
Minxia, a female diver representing China. Wu Minxia is significant
because of the 7 medals (5 gold) that she has won between 2004-
2016.
Your turn!
Now you have written your third paragraph it’s time to read through
your paragraph and edit anything you need to improve upon.
Here is a way you can proofread your work and essentials you need
to look for while proofreading…
Now time for your last paragraph!
Interesting facts
Welcome to our interesting facts portion of this fact file, where you
will learn about three interesting facts about the Olympic sport. Did
you know the heights of the platforms used are changed for men and
women? When women compete they have to dive from the 20 metre
platform but men have to dive from the 27 metre platform.
Amazingly though, a dive from a 27 metre platform takes 3-3.5
seconds!
Your turn!
Now you have written your last paragraph it’s time to read through
your paragraph and edit anything you need to improve upon.
Here is a way you can proofread your work and essentials you need
to look for while proofreading…
Once you have written all of your fact file I would like you to
proofread and check for different features now.
When you’re happy with the writing you have produced submit
your writing so Miss Matthews, Miss Thomas and Mrs Appleyard
can read, comment and mark your fact file.
In my writing, have you included…?
Olympic vocabulary words
A title
Subheadings
Compound sentences
Complex sentences
If you haven’t then go through your work and edit to include them.

LO: To create a coherent fact file.
Today we are going to put the final touches into our fact files. We
are going to create our fact file to ensure we can include our
pictures and captions. This also provides you with the chance to be
creative! You could make your fact file into a book, a leaflet, a
poster etc.
See Miss Matthews example:
Challenge time: Evaluate your writing.
To help you with this challenge it might be helpful to read your fact
file to someone at home. Then you know exactly how your fact file
makes your reader feel.
See Miss Matthews’ example below.
‘I think my fact file makes the reader feel interested as I have kept
my writing short and simple but also given lots of information using
different sentence patterns’.
Your turn!
If you don’t need help from someone at home…
I think my fact file makes my reader feel____________________
___________________________________________________.
I think that because____________________________________
___________________________________________________
___________________________________________________
___________________________________________________
___________________________________________________.
If you do need some help from someone at home…
1. Find a person to read your fact file to.
2. Ask them this question – ‘How did my fact file make you feel?’
3. Write their answer down.
My ___________________________________ said that the
fact file made them feel_________________________________
