The
Roaring
20s
The electric light had begun to bring light to homes around the country. At fi rst, this caused a downturn in the kerosene refi ning industry, but John D. Rockefeller retooled factories to produce gasoline instead.
In 1919, two amendments to the Cons tu on were passed: the 18th Amendment, which outlawed alcohol, and the 19th Amendment, which led to women being able to vote in all elec ons na onwide. Both would have signifi cant consequences for America and the world in the 1920s and beyond.
The prohibi on of alcohol did reduce alcoholism in the U.S.. It also spawned a whole new range of night ac vi es, including night clubs that brought a new music to American ears: jazz. From the bars of New Orleans, jazz came to New York and caught the imagina on of the world.
Along with jazz came new dances: the Charleston, the Tango, and Swing.
Radio broadcas ng began in the U.S. around 1920 and listening to radio shows was an exci ng, new high-tech
pas me. Vacuum tube radio receivers that became available about that me could drive loudspeakers, allowing the whole family to listen together, unlike the previous crystal radios, which required earphones so only one person could listen at a me.
