Brief 1: Look-A-Like.Here I have merged two photos, one of myselfand another of an ape. I spent hours blending the skin tones face moulding.

Brief 5: BiographyThis includes the starting image for this brief of Walt Disney. I showed it to hundreds of people inorder to see who did and did not recognise him.His work and acomplisments are a globabllyrecognised brand of all ages, but would yourecognise the man if he walked down the street?

Evaluation – Methods and Madness EGRD2009The studio started off at a very slow pace, with just one brief and what felt like far too long to do it. I found that this had implications down the line in terms of deadlines. In saying that however it was nice to be able to spend the time fully researching and experimenting on a brief. As the semester progressed I found myself being handed brief after brief which didn’t allow me to push them as far as I might have been able to otherwise. I did however do my best to manage my time and complete them all to the best of my ability – maintaining research, experimentation and good quantities and qualities of work.

I decided to include the look-a-like one day brief as I felt that it was a good start to the year for getting the creative juices flowing. Playing around on Photoshop with something fun and interesting put me in a positive mind-set. I also felt that I had spent so long on matching the skin tones and facial structure of myself and the ape that I wanted my work to be seen.

The next brief was the Shooting Stars project. I really enjoyed being able to go deep in to research in to my chosen subject (9/11). I looked in to the politics of the Bush government, what they wanted and how they were getting it. I looked at how the events were portrayed in the media and how this could be affecting it too. I realised a pattern between the actual definition of terrorism, and the actions and behaviour of the government who were so outspoken on tackling it. I decided that I wanted me video to target this and ask the question of “who are the real terrorists?”

The next brief was the brief encounters/paper co. Brief. I found this one to be very exciting and yet also very challenging, perhaps partly exciting because of the challenge. I was originally in a team with Aneska. I felt like we worked well together, able to bounce ideas off of each other and be able to produce work that had equal input. After the interview where we got feedback from the judges it seemed that the partnership between Aneska and I had ended due to her absence at university. This did however mean that I was able to then deviate slightly and put a more personal touch to the project. This meant that I had covered both collaborative and personal aspects to the work. The idea of using 3d images was our clear unique selling point and we wanted this to show, in order to do this we decided to keep the leaflet simple in terms of how you use it. It was clear at the interview that the idea was very well received. I really enjoyed learning how to create the 3d images and feel as if I have a new tool to use for perhaps a future project.

The next project was the Serial Thriller brief. For this brief Louise and I decided to work together. We both really enjoyed the process stage as our “data” steadily increased. We decided to get an image of an animal and describe it to people without them seeing it. They were to draw what we said as we said it. We soon realised that people part way through our drawings realised what the animal was and would therefore sort of ignore the description and continue with preconceived images of that animal. Because of this we decided to use mythi-cal creatures. This was much more effective as when people were drawing, they had no idea what the creature was and therefore the end result was always something interesting. We would then describe the new drawing to the next person and kept this pattern. After only a few steps the creature had changed greatly from the original and in the end was something completely new altogether.

The final brief was the biography brief. From the start of this brief I unfortunately did not make a connection and therefore struggled to produce work to the standard that I would normally. I do however feel as though I was on to a good concept and that with time it could have, and still could develop in to something very good. The person I “drew from the hat” was Walt Disney. After pondering on the matter and the work that he had done it occurred to me that, although his cartoons, his characters, his parks and movies were all worldwide and instantly recognised brands – I wondered how many people would recognise Walt Disney himself, should he walk down the street. I put this to the test and did two recognition tests, one on a photo of Walt Disney and one on an outline of Mickey Mouse. The results were staggering. 100% of people recognised Mickey Mouse, unsurprisingly, however only 2% recognised Walt Disney himself.

At the end of this semester I feel as though I have learnt many things – and in fact many more than I could have guessed. Not only have I learnt techniques and design skills such as stereoscopic 3d images, video editing, and different research techniques. But also the expe-rience of a live brief, the task of managing multiple deadlines, and the knowledge that can not only be learnt from the tutors, but also fellow students on the course.
