Here is an example of a set of instructions for a truly disgusting recipe! You might notice that the instructions link to one of the characters in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and there are some other links to Roald Dahl stories too. Can you spot them?

SLIMY WORM AND HOT ICE-CREAM SMOOTHIES Are you hungry all the time? Are you afraid that you might not be eating enough to grow into a true Gloop? But, do you have access to an electric mixer and these easy ingredients? Then fear not, for I have a solution (literally!). Follow this recipe to make the most scrumptious, disgusting, slimy, nutritious, weird smoothie that will get you looking like

If we were at school these are the things that we would be looking at when writing instructions.

Augustus Gloop before you can say “gluttonous”! This recipe serves 2. You will need: 20-25 slimy worms (the slimier the better), 350g kale leaves, 2 stinky snozzcumbers, 500g of Wonka’s hot ice-cream for a cold day, a cup of dragon blood, 4 smashed bananas, a handful of fresh mosquitoes, 3/4th of a cup of sugar and a pinch of salt. You will also need strong metal body armour to protect you, in case the food processor explodes. How to make the smoothie 1. First, dress yourself in your armour, be warned this will feel rather heavy. 2. Next, in the food processor blend together the worms to make a thick, smooth paste. (You might want to pinch your nose with a peg for this, it can get very smelly!) 3. Now add in the kale and the snozzcumbers, bit by bit, blending to maintain the smooth texture. 4. Cut the hot ice-cream for a cold day into little chunks and carefully add these in the top while blending to incorporate. 5. Then, quickly add in the dragon blood and mashed banana, not giving the mixture time to bubble over. Mix for 3 minutes on high speed. 6. Finally, when it is safe to open the lid, add in the fresh mosquitoes for an extra crunch. 7. Season with the sugar and salt. Pour into a tall glass and your disgusting, satisfying, nutritious drink is ready. This smoothie will keep you warm and keep hunger at bay on even the most disastrous day! Activity 1: Read the instructions for the recipe to someone in your house. How are you going to add in expression to your reading? Make sure you look out for the different punctuation marks. You would read a sentence that ends in a full stop very differently to one that ends in an exclamation mark. Activity 2: Spot where the imperative verbs are (these are the bossy words that tell you exactly what to do e.g. dress, put). They aren’t always at the start of the instruction.

Page 4: Year 2 Home Learning Ideas week beginning 15th …...Year 2 – Home Learning Ideas week beginning 15th June Have a go at some of these ideas – try your best and ask someone at home

Activity 3: You might also want to listen to Neil Gaiman reading his book Instructions https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ra4pZ3OTUKA&t=32s. This book is full of instructions – see how many you can hear. What are some of the imperative verbs that are used? Try and make a list of them. Activity 4: Your challenge is now to write your own set of instructions making sure that you include all of the features above. Your instructions could be for anything! A recipe you like to cook, a game you like to play or something that you know how to make. If you really want to challenge yourself why not make up your own disgusting recipe just like the one above?! We would LOVE to see some of the writing that you do so please send it through to use at the School Office. Pobble 365 This week’s picture is called The Magic Ride. There are 3 activities linked to this picture – questions to answer, a story starter and a picture challenge. This is attached separately.

Reading This week we have also uploaded an ‘Emoji Phonics Mosaic’. In this challenge you have to read some real and alien words and then colour them in based on a code. Some of these words are tricky to read so think about how you can break them down into smaller parts before putting the word back together. You might need someone to help you understand what the words mean but do make sure that you ask if you’re not sure.

Remember alien words are words that aren’t real!

Phonics/Spellings This week’s spelling rule is looking at the rest of the months of the year and some words related to time. Try and write a sentence to explain something that happens in these months – it could be that a certain month has a special event such as a birthday or you could just write something about the typical type of weather we might have in that month. Then think about a sentence using the time words e.g. Next month it will be my sister’s birthday. Try and write the words in different ways to help you remember them. You could try and write them in big letters, using colours, bubble writing etc.

Phonic Game https://spellingframe.co.uk/spelling-rule/78/1-The-sound-spelt-as-ge-and-dge-at-the-end-of-words This game reminds you how to spell words that have the sound spelt as –ge and –dge at the end of words.

MATHS MyMaths activities set –

Adding single digits Comparing Measures 2

This week we are also going to carry on using Oak National Academy to continue looking at different types of measure (this links to the work you are doing on MyMaths too). Have a go at the activities, try and do them in the right order. We have put the link to the Oak National Academy for each lesson and also some ideas for other things that you could do below. Session 1 - https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-compare-and-order-millilitres-and-litres/activities/4/ Comparing and ordering millilitres and litres – in this session you are going to be looking at doubling and halving linked to millilitres and litres. You then have to put some measurements in order and then compare them using the greater than and less than symbols (we did this a couple of weeks ago). Here is one of the activities that you will be doing:

This session also links to the MyMaths challenge of comparing measures.

Session 2 - https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-use-known-number-bonds-and-derive-related-facts-to-1000-using-the-con/activities/2/ Using known number bonds to make related facts to 1000 – this sounds like it’s going to be tricky but you just need to use what you know about number bonds to 10! Before you have a go at this lesson why not remind yourself of your number bonds to 10 first? This will really help you before watching the video. And don’t forget what we learn in Big Maths – It’s nothing new! Try and find some resources at home to help you. Session 3 – https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-solve-word-problems-about-capacity-and-volume/activities/3 Solving word problems about capacity and volume - in this lesson you will be using the bar model to solve some word problems. Some are more challenging than others but I know that you will all try your best and don’t forget to ask for some help if you get stuck. If you can’t watch the video, here are some of the word problems and there are some other word problems below that you could have a go at:

Page 8: Year 2 Home Learning Ideas week beginning 15th …...Year 2 – Home Learning Ideas week beginning 15th June Have a go at some of these ideas – try your best and ask someone at home

1. If Sarah drinks 2 litres of water a day, how much will she drink in a week? 2. Jenny needs to take 5mls of medicine, 3 times a day. How much medicine will she take in one day? What about one week? 3. If one bucket holds 7 litres, how many would 10 buckets hold? 4. If a cup holds 100ml, how many cups would it take to fill a 2 litre bottle? What about a 5 litre bottle? 5. At a party, Sam drank 200ml of lemonade and 300ml of orange juice. How much did Sam drink altogether? It’s a really good idea to draw a picture to help you to solve these problems e.g. draw the bucket and label how much it holds. Try and make up your own question for someone at home to answer. Make sure that you know what the answer is so that you can tell them if they’ve got it right! Session 4 - https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-solve-word-problems-about-capacity-and-volume-part-two/activities/2 Solving word problems about capacity and volume (second part) – in this session you are going to carry on learning how to solve word problems using the bar model.

Session 5 - https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/consolidation-and-application/activities/1 This session is a recap on all of the learning that you have been doing with Oak Academy over the past 2 weeks – it’s a good way to check what you have understood. Try and impress someone at home with your amazing learning! If you have found these videos to be challenging don’t worry. Have a go at the activity below which is all about comparing volume. You could try at home to fill up different containers and put them in order of how much liquid they hold.

Big Maths This week you have another Beat That challenge to do. We’d really love to hear how you’re getting on with these and how many questions you’ve been able to answer in a minute! Science

Page 13: Year 2 Home Learning Ideas week beginning 15th …...Year 2 – Home Learning Ideas week beginning 15th June Have a go at some of these ideas – try your best and ask someone at home

Take your pick of some of these science challenges this week. You might have to do some research to find out more about some of them so find someone in your house that could help you. Try and choose at least one of the investigations and try to explain what you think has happened. 30 Days Wild – Wildlife Trusts In our newsletters last week we directed you to the 30 days wild challenge set up by the Wildlife Trusts. If you haven’t already signed up then don’t worry because you still can. There are lots of different activities that you can have a go at all linked to getting outside and being in the wild! There are also art and craft activities that we know some of you would be fantastic at. Here is the link again for those of you that haven’t signed up yet: https://action.wildlifetrusts.org/page/57739/petition/1 This link will also take you to some fun ideas that you can do at home linked to nature - https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/looking-after-yourself-and-nature.

Topic based ideas: Geography – https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zk9tpg8 We're going to be looking at a new continent and a new country this week by looking at Nigeria which is in Africa. Use the link above to watch some videos and find out lots of facts about this country. There are some activities that you can then have a go at, including a reading activity with questions to answer.

Think about how you can present what you have found out. Will you make a poster? A fact sheet? You could even try and present your findings to your family, almost like a news report! PSHCE/Wellbeing – Bucket of Happiness: This week we have attached an activity which is all about happiness. We are asking you to fill in a bucket with all of the things that make you happy. You could write or draw depending on how you want to share your ideas. Again, you can either print out the bucket or draw your own.

Music – https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/class-clips-video/physical-education--music-ks1-dance-with-the-elements/z7m2y9q If you follow this link you will find four dances linked to each of the four elements (air, earth, wind and fire). The dances are each set to different pieces of classical music. Watch the videos and if you scroll down the page you will find some activities that you could have a go at. You could try and learn and copy the dance or just listen to the music and think about how it makes you feel.

Art – https://classroom.thenational.academy/lessons/to-explore-tints-and-shades-ae6dfb/activities/2 In this session you are going to be exploring the work of the artist Kandinsky and creating your own version of his famous work on circles. The video takes you through how to do this but if you can’t watch the video you can use the picture here as inspiration for your own art work. You just need to fold the paper into 12 sections and then use different coloured paint, pens or pencils to create the different circles. Experiment in whichever way you choose! What if you chose to create different shapes using the same technique?

Also, see the links above (in the science section) to the Wildlife Trusts website which has lots of art and craft activities to have a go at. The children can use their homework books for any of these tasks – they are welcome to copy out questions or just number them. This could also be a discussion. Keep working on the Year 1 and 2 Common Exception words and high frequency words as well.
