Gonski Institute for Education: Leading for Educational Change

On Tuesday, 20 November at UNSW

Kensington Campus, Me Elgood and I

attended a workshop on Educational

Leadership together with other Principals and Executive in

our schools. The first session Learning from Global Leaders

and Systems presented by Professor Pasi Sahlberg was an

inspirational session which highlighted that equity in

education has become an important part of quality

education in Australia. The session also explored what equity

in education means around the world and why it has become

such a central issue in improving schools and education

systems today. It was also great to meet these educational leaders such as Professor Adrian Piccoli and

Professor Pasi Sahlberg in person.

The other two sessions Leading Change in Classrooms presented by

Dr Simon Breakspear and Leading for Equity, concentrated on

changing practices, authentic models of success from school leaders

and the research-base on effective approaches to learning. Changing

practice through collaboration and networks within and beyond the

school was a vital message.

Year 12 Formal

On Monday 26 November, a large

number of staff, including John

Kennedy, attended the Year 12

Formal for the class of 2018. It was a

joyous occasion celebrating six

eventful high school years at

Homebush Boys. They all looked

handsome in their suits and ties and it

was also great to see some of my

students that I taught at

Strathfield Girls attend the

night. It was a spectacular venue

and the manager commented

that they had hosted six other

Formals from other schools and

Homebush Boys was the best

behaved and respectful students. This is a testament to the

HOMEBUSH BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BUSH BULLETIN Issue 7 Bridge Rd, HOMEBUSH NSW 2140 PO BOX 4159, HOMEBUSH SOUTH NSW 2140 Email: [email protected] Ph: 9764 3611

staff and students at our school. Well done to Jingping and Rita for supporting and organising this event

and to our wonderful students who have made us proud.

Concord High School

On Tuesday 27 November, I spent the day at Concord High School once again, as Jody Engisch (Acting

Principal) organised the Concord High Executive Conference. It was an honour and pleasure to step into

her shoes for the day. I was warmly welcomed by the staff,

students and whole school community. Once again I attended

their daily staff briefing session at 8:40 am at the common

room and was warmly welcomed and briefed by Mr Anderson

(Deputy Principal). I was handed a takeaway coffee to my

liking from the canteen, with morning tea and lunch catered

for me. The SAS staff were very

welcoming and the students and

staff were very friendly during

playground duty at recess and

lunch. I gained valuable insight on

how another school local school

operates and took a few pointers

in some great ideas that they had

in place. I would like to thank Mr Elgood for giving me the

opportunity and for Ms Engisch and Concord High School for all

their hospitality.

SGHS Piano Concert

Strathfield Girls High School also hosted their annual Piano

Concert in their school hall on Friday. The concert showcased the

talents of Year 12 Student’s major works as well as students from

Year 7 – 11. It was a magnificent evening which made parents

and teachers proud. The special guest of the evening was Joseph

Wang (Year 9) from Homebush

Boys. He played two exquisite

pieces and he was the star of the

show. Joseph is a truly gifted

student who will definitely be playing in concert

halls in the future.

Year 12 HSC Results

On Friday 14 December, thanks to Ms Blunden, Ms Zammit, Mr Lee, Ms Duch, Ms Anton, the SRC students

and the Prefects who hosted a celebratory BBQ under the archers for our Year 12 2018 students and their

teachers. Despite the thunderstorm and rain we managed to celebrate the outstanding achievements for

all our students and staff.

Well done to all and to our schools’ fantastic achievement.

Have a great Christmas break and thank you all for your support in 2018.

From the Deputy’s Desk

Mrs Matina Shadwick - Relieving Deputy Principal 2018

As we look down the barrel of a long summer break, we must pause to reflect

on the wonderful staff and student achievements.

China Day celebrations

On Friday 16

November, our Chinese students attended

the China Day program at the Hurstville

Centre. The day celebrated the success of

the Confucius Volunteer Teacher program

by showcasing the successes of their

efforts in schools. Our boys performed in

front of other schools and were ably

congratulated for their talents as

inspired by the work of Ms Wang

through the support of Jinping and

more recently Ms Tu while Mrs

Blunden was on leave.

Congratulations Ms Wang and I take

my hat off to you for encouraging our

boys to display musical and dance

talents in front of any audience.

HBHS Executive Conference

The executive had a very successful day at the

2018 Conference. We were fortunate to have 3

guest presenters – John Selby , Steven So and

Lisa Jamieson. John is the Dirctor of the Beverley

Hills network of schools and presented some

insightful thoughts on leadership versus

management. The take home messages for me

were

We record achievement only if we can

evidence improve student outcomes

HOMEBUSH BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BUSH BULLETIN Issue 7 Bridge Rd, HOMEBUSH NSW 2140 PO BOX 4159, HOMEBUSH SOUTH NSW 2140 Email: [email protected] Ph: 9764 3611

A school leadership team needs strong mangement processes and practices to move

forward

Good leadership involves leading by example, knowing names and staff capabilities, use

of “we”, being excellent communicator-individually and part of group, listening to each

other, providing platform to succeed, having a strong team ethos and knowledge of

teams and collective school goal/targets/vision.

Steven and Lisa presented on the topic of The Teacher Performance Management and

Improvement (TPIM) project which focuses on

Managing performance concerns through policy and procedures

Aligning performance concerns to the teaching standards, with a heavy emphasis on PDP

goals, providing support and timeframe for monitoring.

Science Curriculum Affirmation Meeting

Recently Mr Singh, Mr Burke and I attended a collaborative sharing Professional Learning on Science NESA compliance matters. The discussion concentrated on maintaining evidence of programming, assessment and reporting records as best practice while following the School’s policies and procedures. Looking at the Stage 5 Science course and the timetable, scope and sequencing, teaching and learning programs, assessments and reporting information across HBHS and SGHS. It was refreshing to see the similarities and at times a few helpful hints that could work at our school. I am impressed with the quality of the teaching and learning at HBHS.

Principal for a Day

Principal McLean reported a very successful day in the office on Friday 16 November. The morning address on assembly, a Finance Team meeting, a visit to SGHS, a conference meeting with our NESA coordinator, a lesson observation and school planning talks with the senior executive showed Principal McLean that life as a Principal is never dull and at times quite hectic.

Principal Network Awards

Congratulations to Mr Elaro on the 2018 Principal Network Award. Chabes is a very humble, dedicated, hardworking and well respected member of our school. Many will describe Mr Elaro as one of our unsung heroes but as a rel DP working alongside Mr Elaro and the English Faculty, I have grown to further appreciate this manner in dealing with challenges and his soft, quiet personality that is infectious and effective in getting things done while always maintaining a smile on his face and a positive approach to staff

and student wellbeing.

Below is the citation I wrote to support the award.

Mr Cheiban Elaro is an outstanding advocate for public education and supporting the academic

and wellbeing development of young men. Cheiban leads the School’s Positive Behaviour for

Learning Team and is the driving force behind the new Bushy Boy behavioural expectations that

promote equity, fairness and the framework for quality staff, student and community relations.

As an experienced Head Teacher English, Cheiban has built an extremely strong team of teachers

and EaL/D support staff with a genuine passion for building staff capacity. Beneath his quiet,

humble and professional demeanour is knowledge, awareness and a compassionate approach to

promoting student growth that is fostering future leaders.

Congratulations Mr Elaro. You thoroughly derserve this award!

Strathfield Rotary Pride of Workmanship Awards (POW)

Congratulations to Mrs Paleothodoros and Mrs Crozier on the 2018 POW awards. The ladies were nominated for their contributions to the students at HBHS. The Strathfield Rotary Club in conjuction with schools in our network, annually acknowledge the work of our teaching and non teaching staff. Well done ladies!

Below are the citations I wrote to support the two award recipients.

Anna Paleothodoros

I nominate Mrs Anna Paleothodoros for the Strathfield Rotary Pride of Workmanship Award for

her extraordinary efforts and work in her capacity as Deputy Principal at Homebush Boys High

School. Mrs Anna Paleothodoros (affectionately known as Mrs Paleo) joined Homebush Boys

High School at the start of 2017 and she immediately impacted the students, staff and parents

of the school community.

Mrs Anna Paleothodoros is a highly efficient, organised and well respected member of the

school’s executive team. She has been the driving force behind the School’s successful

implementation of the Peer Support Program and has developed the training of our student

leaders. The Peer Support program has seen a marked decline in negative student behaviours

and has promoted positive student relationships between our Year 7 and Year 10 students.

Mrs Anna Paleothodoros is a passionate educator and in 2018 implemented the Stage 6

Community and Family Services Course in Year 11. Her knowledge of how students learn and

how to engage boys in making wise and realistic subject choices is inspiring. Mrs Anna

Paleothodoros’ ability to counsel, advise and guide students with different learning styles from

over 50 different cultural backgrounds speaks volumes for her popularity and leadership of

student initiatives.

Mrs Anna Paleothodoros is a visionary and quickly saw the need for an additional kitchen facility

at Homebush Boys High School to meet the increased popularity of the Hospitality subject. She

led and successfully met all the demands for a new $600,000 kitchen, which was used for the

first time during the Year 12 Graduation in late September this year.

Mrs Paleo takes pride in her work ethic and her support of student and staff teaching and

learning initiatives. She successfully continues to mentor many beginning teachers and relieving

members of the executive and senior executive team.

Bridget Crozier

I nominate Mrs Bridget Crozier for the Strathfield Rotary Pride of Workmanship Award for her

extraordinary efforts and work in her capacity as Medical and First Aid Officer at Homebush Boys

High School. Mrs Bridget Crozier (affectionately known as Britta) is the caring face our boys see

when injured, sick or simply put, “feel like they will be sick”.

Britta’s humility, care and genuine approach to all illnesses and ailments is commendable. She

has a flair for diffusing the irate and irrational personalities of students that need her medical

care and handles parents and family concerns with ease of comfort and security that appropriate

first aid care has been taken and their son is in good hands.

HOMEBUSH BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BUSH BULLETIN Issue 7 Bridge Rd, HOMEBUSH NSW 2140 PO BOX 4159, HOMEBUSH SOUTH NSW 2140 Email: [email protected] Ph: 9764 3611

Britta’s clinical nurse training is invaluable in the planning and execution of all anaphylactic,

asthmatic and allergy prone student medical plans that she ensures are kept up to date and

communicated to all teaching and non-teaching staff. Similarly, vaccinations are never a big deal

when Britta is present to support students and also staff. The number of suspected or pre-

empted fainting are always kept to a minimal.

As a member of the School’s SASS staff, Britta

supports the school administrative manager

and all staff performing all duties with a

sophisticated aptitude and remaining flexible

and committed to programs that challenged

our students to learn and grow. She works

closely with the all staff to plan excursions and

ensure that all medical aids are available when

students are not on school grounds. Mrs

Bridget Crozier takes pride in her work and is willing to train new office staff thus passing on her

knowledge of what works best at Homebush Boys High School.

I would have no hesitation in strongly recommending Mrs Bridget Crozier for this award as her

work demonstrates a genuine, tireless and above and beyond approach to supporting staff,

students and the local Homebush Boys High School community.

Year 11 Mock Interviews On Friday 23 November, Mrs Anton, Mrs Lakshmipathy

and I conducted interviews for the University of

Western Sydney Most Outstanding Student

Scholarship. I had the pleasure of interviewing 6

wonderful Year 11 students vying for a $500 grant to

help with Year 12 2019 studies and a $20,000

conditional scholarship to study at the UWS in 2020.

The conditional scholarship is available to all schools

and Georgia has been successful in securing this award

for HBHS on many occasions in the past years. It was a

pleasure to listen to our boys and hear them speak of their strengths, challenges and passion for

their future. Congratulations to the successful recipient Michael Lopes. Michael will be

acknowledged at the Presentation Day ceremony.

Year 7 Blue and Maroon Award Ceremony.

On Monday 26 November, the Year 7

Blue and Maroon Awards ceremony

was held marking a wonderful

celebration of consistent efforts and

application in subjects for Semester 2.

It was great to see that more Year 7

boys were receiving awards this

semester. I have been encouraging the

boys to keep working hard till the end of the

year. Congratulations to all award recipients

and thank you to Mr Elaro, Ms Sahay and Ms

Kumaralingam on their efforts in promoting

student achievements.

Visit from Director Maria Serafim

The Homebush Boys High School senior

executive had the privilege of meeting with

Director Maria Serafim on 13 November to

discuss and celebrate the achievements of

our Principal Mr Elgood. Passing by Mr

Elgood’s office on that afternoon, one could

have mistaken the place for a Harry Potter

mystical castle. The theme of magic, casting

of spells and the wand as a symbol of the tool that

makes all wonderful things happen, proved to be

quite topical and was used to set the tone for the

celebration of Mr Elgood’s 2018 goals for HBHS.

Grandmaster Wizard Elgood and his DP Wizard staff

together with Student Wizard voices reflected on Mr

Elgood’s achievements this year and spent the

afternoon casting spells and wishes for a shared

vision of greater successes in 2019. Our School

Director, Maria Serafim was very impressed with our school and the comments relayed from

students about Mr Elgood’s leadership and the school’s future direction.

Year 12 Formal

The backdrop was our beautiful Harbour city. The

company was our HSC Class of 2018 and 24 HBHS staff.

The music, powerpoint of Year 12 memories, the awards

given to staff and students that will forever be

remembered - all set the scene for a very successful Year

12 Formal. A huge thank you to all staff who attended

and help create memories of the night for our students.

I will also have the following memories forever

Mrs Edwards dancing ALL night (from the 1st

track to the last) on the dance floor, around and

near her table sitting, on the balcony corridor

overlooking the whole crowd

Mr Kisso and Mr Achmad acting as security

guards on the stage watching the boys dance, ansd swaying away with some impressive

dance moves

Merry Christmas to all our students and families. May the holiday season be a time to rest and spend

From the Deputy’s Desk

Mr Syarief Achmad - Deputy Principal

2018 has been a fantastic year for staff and students at Homebush Boys High School.

I can say that I am settling into my new role and I’m certainly enjoying the

experience. I’d like to congratulate everyone who has worked assiduously this year

to support our students. Below is a summary of some of the highlights from the past

few weeks.

Pink Ribbon Day and Remembrance Day

I’d like to thank Mr Lee for his work with the SRC, in

particular his support of the acknowledgement of

two significant days in our calendar. It was

important that as a school we observed one

minute’s silence in memory of those who died or

suffered in all wars and armed conflicts, especially

as this year marks the 100th anniversary of the

Armistice which ended WWI. I know that Thomas

spent his period off helping Tom Nieser in Year 10

write his speech for assembly.

Thank you to all staff who wore pink in support of Pink Ribbon Day or donated generously to the cause.

It was hard not to get emotional hearing Zain Ousmand speak about how he was personally affected by

his mother’s illness and how the Pink Ribbon campaign helped him through such a tough time.

Mini Orientation Day

On Tuesday, 20 November HBHS

hosted a small group of Year 6

students to introduce them to

high school life. It was a great

day and the students enjoyed

the activities they experienced

with the Peer Support Leaders

and their tour of the school. I’d

like to that Ms Coutinho and Mr Kisso for organising the day, Ms

Chapman for her support throughout the day and the Learning and Support Teachers for their role in

testing our future students. Thanks also to everyone who made the students feel welcome during their

tour of the school.

White Ribbon Day Assembly

Despite Mother

Nature’s best

efforts to thwart

our assembly on

Friday 23rd, I am

grateful for

everyone’s

patience and

resilience to

ensure that the assembly was a success. Ending violence

against women is a very important cause and as a school

it is vital that we ensure our students are reminded of

their role in standing up, speaking out and acting to prevent violence against women. Thank you to Mrs

Duch and the Prefect team for their organisation of the assembly and Mr Lee for his work with the Drum

Corp.

Australian Business Week (ABW)

During Week 7 and 8, 50 of our Year 10 students were working at

Strathfield Girls HS with close to 200 SGHS students on their

Hospitality Simulation. The ABW program is designed to

encourage

independent and

cooperative

learning skills, and

to develop an

enterprise

mindset prior to

proceeding to further study or entering the workforce. It

exposes students to coping with deadlines and

developing effective time management

skills.

HOMEBUSH BOYS HIGH SCHOOL BUSH BULLETIN Issue 7 Bridge Rd, HOMEBUSH NSW 2140 PO BOX 4159, HOMEBUSH SOUTH NSW 2140 Email: [email protected] Ph: 9764 3611

I’d like to thank Mr Kisso for organising the program and

leading its implementation at SGHS this year, but also Ms

Napoli, Mrs Duch, Ms Coutinho, Mr Innasi and Mrs Sofy

for helping to supervise and mentor the students. By all

accounts the students were very well behaved, wore

their uniform with pride, contributed effectively to their

groups and have produced some outstanding trade

displays, commercials and annual reports. Their final

presentations were judged by the Senior Executive from

both schools and winners awarded certificates and

medals.

Year 7 2019 Orientation Day

On Tuesday 4th

December, close to

200 Year 6 students

and their parents

arrived for the

Orientation Day. It

was a jam-packed

day and could not

have happened

without the help and support of staff and students. In

particular, I’d like to thank Ms Coutinho, Mr Kisso, Ms

Chapman, Mrs Paleothodoros, Mr Elgood, Mr Madyski, Mr Kirubagaran, Mr Bawden, Mrs Crozier, Mr Lee,

Mr Alexander, Mrs Kaur, Mrs Whelan and all of the front office staff. The Peer Support leaders and SRC

were phenomenal. Thank you to the ESL and Learning Support team for assessing the students to help

with class placements next year. Parents were very grateful to get to know the school and really

appreciated the morning tea and pop-up uniform stand

setup on the Senior Lawn

by the P&C.

Thanks

On a final note, I would like to thank everyone for all the support I have received this term. I can’t believe

how quickly it’s gone. I’ve enjoyed the experience of being your Deputy Principal this term and have

certainly learned a lot in the process. In particular, I would like to thank Mr Elgood, Mrs Paleothodoros

and Mrs Shadwick for their patience and support, the office staff for their can do attitude to anything I

throw their way and last but certainly not least, and I’d like to thank the teaching staff for always giving

one hundred percent to the education of our young men. It has been great getting to know some of our

parents in a different setting and I thank each of you for supporting what we do here at Homebush Boys

High School. Enjoy the break and stay safe.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate these students on their achievements and

also their teachers Mr Letsios (VA) and Mr Alexander (Music). Student achievement is a

combination of student’s talent and their teacher’s strong direction and knowledge. Well done!

I would also like to acknowledge Mr Albertson (Music) who will be taking sabbatical leave in

2019. The students I know will miss his presence in the school. He will be ticking a few things off

his bucket list by attending the Christmas Eve service at Kings College Chapel, Cambridge,

England. He returns to HBHS in 2020.

Mr Stinson (VA) has also contributed to the CAPA faculty this year, establishing The Art Club, that

is open to all students at HBHS. This will begin to flourish next year with student’s own projects

as well as school projects.

I am looking forward to another productive year in 2019.

Mr Chris Burke – Year Advisor

As we come to the end of the 2018 school year I want to thank the Year 10

students who have put in a concerted effort to improve both their results

and themselves as individuals. We have had a good year focusing on our

futures, with the students making intelligent subject choices to best suit

them in their senior schooling. The young men have wholeheartedly put themselves into a range

of new scenarios even without fully knowing the outcome. The maturity of the cohort continues

to grow as they look towards the next phase of their lives.

The support and care shown by our newly minted Peer Support Leaders has seen their utilisation

across a range of school initiatives as they constantly demonstrate the qualities for which they

were chosen. The teachers of Year 7 have had much to say about how hard the leaders have

worked to forge connections with their younger peers.

The work done in the local community by our young men always amazes the staff with many

students showing a passion that often directs them towards a lifelong journey. While many of

our students receive acknowledgement and recognition for the work that they are doing, many

students remain quiet, working to improve some aspect of their community individually or as

part of a larger machine for change. These students shoulder huge responsibility are shining

examples of our school creed, “upright and strong”.

While some of our number fell short of the 2017 NAPLAN goal, their maturity and desire to

improve resulted in most of these students meeting the minimum standard early in the year. We

have a lot of work to do in the future and as the cohort matures and continues to grow, we know

they will continue to meet and exceed our expectations in all areas of school life. Some of our

young men will realise their passion lies outside of school, while others will seek greater

academic heights. We want to support all students regardless of their path and will work with

the students and parents to help students in taking the best course of action.

I wish to thank the staff who directly deal with Year 10 and put so much effort into driving them

towards the mastery of skills they have been developing for multiple years. Thanks go to Mrs

Paleothodoros who has worked almost non-stop to support the year group as well as Ms

Chapman, Ms Gane, Mr Fulton for their work supporting the wellbeing of all students and Mr

Johnston who has supported myself and Year 10 this year.
