Students wishing to attend BSC have two enrolment options:

• Full time enrolment - Full time enrolment – These students are enrolled in either a selection of TASC courses or a combination of TASC and VET courses to make up their required hours. These students are on campus full time at BSC completing year 11 & 12.

• Dual enrolled student - Dual enrolment– These students are enrolled at BSC and at another teggana campus. These students are enrolled in two ways:

1. Enrolled in TASC courses on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at BSC and either TASC or VET courses Tuesday and Wednesday at another teggana campus.

2. Enrolled in a VET course at BSC on Tuesday and Thursday while on Monday, Wednesday and Friday they are enrolled in TASC courses at another teggana campus.

SHB20216 Certificate II Salon Assistant ABOUT THIS COURSE This qualification reflects the role of individuals who work as salon assistants and are competent in communicating in the workplace, interacting with and providing service to clients and assistance to colleagues. They perform routine functions under direct supervision as part of a hairdressing team.

Students will learn about: • All aspects of the hairdressing industry and the career options available within the industry • Techniques to wash, colour, braid and dry hair • Occupational health and safety in a hair salon • Personal, professional presentation, and self-management • Verbal and non-verbal communication • Teamwork • Problem solving

Students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of learning activities including: • On and off-the-job activities • Practical demonstrations • Written assignments, tests • Meeting and servicing clients • Industry work placements

The salon assistant course is run in a purpose built hairdressing salon, where practical tasks are completed on both mannequins and live models. To be successful in the salon assistant course students will need to participate in all class activities and be present in class. Students will also be expected to complete some activities and assignments in their own time. On successful completion of this VET course, students will achieve SHB20216 Certificate II in Salon Assistant, this may make them more attractive to employers when applying to be apprentice hairdressers. Students will also have obtained many skills and knowledge which will benefit them in other industries.

Introduction to Nursing (HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance (SoA))

ABOUT THIS COURSE The Introduction to Nursing course offers a range of opportunities for students to learn and experience the role nurses and other health professionals per-form within the health services system. This course is designed for students with a focus on taking a vocational pathway either towards work as a carer or progress to further TAFE based study towards an Enrolled Nurse or other health professional.

Students will learn about: • Body systems • Infection control and hygiene • Medical terminology • First aid • Communication in health services • Work health and safety

COURSE STRUCTURE The Introduction to Nursing course can be structured as a one or two year program. Both programs provide two full days of face-to-face time with the teacher, practical placements at health facility and work readiness development.

In the first year students can: • On successful completion students will achieve 11 of 15 units from HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance and receive a Statement of Attainment (SoA) for these units. • Participate in a significant work placement opportunity.

If students choose to continue into the second year of the program they can: • On successful completion students will achieve the final four units required for HLT33115 Certificate III in Health Services Assistance and be awarded the full certificate. • Complete two further units focusing on dementia and aged care. • Participate in work placements through a range of work facilities.

Students will be awarded statements of attainment for any units they are competent in within this qualification. They will also participate in work placements within the relevant health field. This has the potential to set students up for future employment or studies within the nursing or the broader health services.

CUA20113 Certificate II in DanceABOUT THIS COURSE This is a vocational training program where the student completes the required course work and assessment and upon completion attains Certificate II in Dance (a nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) certificate).

• Focuses on students developing industry specific dance and workplace skills. • Training takes place within the school education setting in conjunction with local industry partners such as local council and dance studios. • Prepares students to the standard expected from employers and industry. • Students’ receive a certificate acknowledging completion of a nationally recognised training course.

Students will learn about: • Safe dance practice and body conditioning • Dance techniques including Street, Jazz, and Ballet • Performance preparation and artistic and performance skills

Transferrable skills: • Personal time management and accountability • Working with others; team work, effective communication, conflict resolution • Project preparation skills; planning, communicating with stakeholders, risk management.

COURSE STRUCTURE The Certificate II in Dance is structured as a one year program. It provides two full days per week of face-to-face time with the teacher, and planned performance events which will largely take place in students’ personal time.

Successful completion of the qualification may lead onto further dance study such as Dance 3 (TASC), Certificate IV in Dance which is offered at full-time dance schools interstate, as well as skills that are desirable for pre-tertiary performing arts courses such as dance, musical theatre, and other mixed art forms.

Furthermore, the skills learnt in the course have many transferable applications that are desirable to future employers such as time management, personal accountability, team work and conflict resolution.

CUA20215 Certificate II in Creative Industries (focus on Design and Production) ABOUT THIS COURSE This course is for students interested in developing skills and knowledge to approach creative thinking, problem solving, and design. Students will learn creative design thinking fundamentals which have prospective use for inventing, re-designing, entrepreneurial applications and disruption of existing industries. The course will delivered in conjunction with LiveTiles, a technology industry company that focuses on user experience interfaces and products with offices in Hobart, Sydney, Seattle, and New York. This unique partnership allows students to access industry knowledge, skills, and trends that are unparalleled in other secondary education courses.

Students will learn about: • Creative design process • Critical and creative thinking • Digital media technology and applications

Transferrable skills and knowledge: • Personal time management and accountability. • Working with others; team work, effective communication, conflict resolution. • Project preparation skills; planning, communicating with stakeholders, risk management.

COURSE STRUCTURE Creative Industries (Design and Production) course offers students the opportunity to develop and apply critical and creative problem solving skills in both traditional and technology focused areas to solve a variety of user experience issues. Real life scenarios such as building design and community lifestyle will be investigated over the year with students developing their own ideas and inventions as solutions. Students will also learn how to manage digital media products and to deliver services to customers.

CUA20215 Certificate II in Creative Industries is structured as a one year program. It provides two full days per week of face-to-face time with teachers from Bayview Secondary College and LiveTiles.

Successful completion of the certification can lead onto further creative and design thinking study such as Certificate III in Design Fundamentals.

Introduction to Civil Construction (RII20115 Certificate II in Resource and Infrastructure Work Preparation)ABOUT THIS COURSE Kick start your career in the civil construction or engineering industry with this course!

Civil construction is a branch of the construction industry involved with the construction and maintenance of both natural and physically built environments such as roads, railways, buildings, water reservoirs, subdivisions, airports, bridges, sewer systems, tunnels and dams. Qualified civil construction workers are in high demand to work on major infrastructure projects. This qualification reflects the roles of individuals who perform basic procedures, using practical skills and fundamental operational knowledge, and takes some responsibility for the quality of work outcomes.

Students in this course will learn about: • Health and safety • Risk management • Communication • Planning and preparing to undertake a task • Hand and power tool operation • Cutting, bending and welding metal • Measurements and calculations

COURSE STRUCTURE Training for this course will be conducted in a purpose built trade training facility located at Bayview Secondary College on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Students will practice and complete practical skills at this facility related to the units of competency being delivered. When necessary students may be taken to alternative learning facilities or workplaces to complete tasks related to the course. On successful completion of this course students will achieve RII20115 Resource and Infrastructure Work Preparation. This may make students more appealing to employers when applying for positions in the civil construction industry. Students may also wish to explore further training in industry specific certificate III courses.

Hospitality – Industry Ready Skill SetABOUT THIS COURSE Hospitality is a growth industry not only in Tasmania but around Australia. Careers in the hospitality industry can include food and beverage service positions, back of house staff and managerial positions in restaurants and hotels. When you undertake training in this industry, you can create a ‘portable’ career that offers experiences not only in Australia but overseas. You’ll have the opportunity to meet and work with interesting people, learn valuable and transferable skills, and experience practical training at our facilities. With unprecedented and widespread skills shortages in cookery and hospitality, now is the time to consider undertaking training in this area.

The skill set delivered at Bayview Secondary College will provide training related to these areas: • Using hygienic practices for food safety • Preparing simple dishes • Cleaning kitchen premises and equipment • Serve food and beverage • Prepare and serve espresso coffee • Provide Responsible Service Of Alcohol

COURSE STRUCTURE Training for this course will be conducted in facilities that reflect those experienced in a commercial hospitality environment. This course will be conducted on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Delivery will occur either at Bayview Secondary College or off site at alternative learning facilities or workplaces to complete specific tasks related to the course. On successful completion of this course students will obtain a Statement of Attainment for the units completed in the skill set. This may make students more appealing to employers when applying for positions in the hospitality industry. Students may also wish to explore further training in industry specific Certificate III courses at the completion of the skill set.
