Year 11 Mocks: Be Prepared

• Pupils need to be at their exam

room/location 20 mins prior to exams

• Pupils should come prepared with a

snack, if their exam ends after break

there will not be able to buy food

• Be prepared – you will need to have all

the equipment require for each exam

Wednesday IS a

calculator paper

When not in an exam pupils will be in timetabled lessons and

will be able to revise in lessons – they should be prepared and

bring in their own paper based revision

Thursday:

X curricular day for the rest of the school, Y11 pupils when not in an exam

will be based in L Centre, roomings will be displayed outside the Y11 office.

They will be supported by some of the Y11 tutors

No homework will be set during mock week, the expectation

is that students revise for exams

What are apprenticeships?Main components

• Gaining qualifications in the work place

• A real job with training

• Usually 1 day a week with training provider

What does it involve?

• A trainee position whilst working towards a vocational qualification

• Assessment is competency based

• Numeracy and literacy study if required (many require C/4 grade in GCSE English/Maths)

• Paid salary: currently min. £3.70 per hour• Average wage is £170 a week

• Employment a minimum of 30 hours a week

• Contract of employment, holiday, sick pay

What is Sixth Form like?• An academic intensive atmosphere.

• Style – Teachers might be more informal in class but will have higherexpectations. Students will be expected to work much harder outside theclassroom.

• A levels – Still the ‘Gold Standard’. Whilst not for every student, they are stillwidely respected.

What is Sixth Form like?• Students need to develop independent

study skills and take responsibility for their own learning (quite quickly as there are May mock exams and assessments in September on most courses).

• GCSE requirements are English Language and Maths (grade 4) as a minimum plus a 5 (or equivalent) in 3 additional subjects.

• Many subjects require a 5 or 6 grade at GCSE (see Prospectus) this is to ensure the successful progression of learning through A level.

The DfE performance tables show that, after South Wilts Grammar School, Hardenhuish is the highest ranked Sixth Form in Wiltshire for progression to top universities.

How and When?Guidance Meetings

From mid-January all applicants will have individual IAG meetings

with Mrs Todd/Mrs Brenton.

A chance to discuss subject choices and promotes a discussion on suitability

of A level choices and likely final options.

In a small minority of cases (<2%) students

may be asked to change an AS choice due

to a clash at a later date and will need

a follow up meeting. This is unlikely

to happen unless an ‘unusual combination’ is

selected.
