Introduction
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the Year 11 curriculum booklet. This booklet includes key infor-
mation and advice from each GCSE subject leading up to the summer examina-
tions, with further pastoral information to support students through their final year
at Woking High School.
At the back of the booklet students will find a revision plan schedule, which can
be used by students to plan and prepare for examinations effectively.
Please note that there will be two parent consultation evenings this academic year,
held on 14th October 2015 and 21st January 2016. It is vital that all Year 11
students/parents attend to reflect on previous performance and to plan ahead for
the future.
There will also be a careers ‘moving on fayre’ held in the Autumn term on Friday
25th September to enable students to prepare for post 16 education and life after
Woking High School. This will be attended by a variety of local employers, col-
leges and universities. Parents will be invited to attend the fayre and more details
will follow at the start of the Autumn term.
I would also like to invite you to a parent’s revision evening on January 25th
2016. The evening is aimed at providing parents with tips, ideas and strategies for
how they can best support their son/daughters in the completion of controlled as-
sessments and preparation for final examinations. Students are also more than
welcome to attend this evening.
At the end of the Autumn term Year 11 are scheduled to have internal exams in
the weeks commencing December 7th 2015 and December 14th respectively.
These indicative exam sessions give students an experience of genuine public ex-
amination conditions and are treated very seriously. They are also a valuable op-
portunity to find out the exact progress that your son/daughter has made and help
to focus his/her efforts for the rest of the year.
This year group has a great deal of potential and I am looking forward to working
with you to support them in achieving their best this year. Finally I wish all of the
Year 11 students a successful and enjoyable final year at Woking High School.
Mrs E Alighieri

Plan a ‘to do’ list:
Prioritise
A = must be done
B = should be done
C = could be done
Build in rests – 30 minutes work with rest breaks.
Assisting with Revision
• Work out a revision timetable for each subject.
• Break revision time into small chunks - hour-long sessions with short breaks at the end of each session often work well.
• Make sure your son/daughter has all the essential materials.
• Provide blank cards for condensed revision notes.
• Buy new stationery, highlighters and pens to make revision more interesting.
• Go through school notes with your son/daughter or listen while they revise a topic.
• Time your son/daughter’s attempts at practice papers.

4. Perspective:
•Remember you are human. This is not a weakness and you are more than capa-
ble. The mind is a very powerful organ.
•Every person has experienced stress or anxiety in their life; you just need to
practice ways to help you manage your anxiety. And you do have to practise,
these strategies will help but they are not a quick fix.
•Don’t be hard on yourself; give yourself time and plan activities that you enjoy
each day, from something small such as having a chocolate bar to having a trip
out!
•Remember that even if you do make mistakes, it is not the end of the world or
your life. The important thing is to keep going.
34
3. The Worry Tree:
•Be aware of when you are starting to feel anxious or stressed. For example; does
your heart beat race, not being able to concentrate, negative thoughts, breathing
quickly…
•Stop what you are doing and try to identify the worry. For example: “I am wor-
ried that I don’t know enough quotations for Of Mice and Men”.
•It often helps to write the worry down.
•Then say to yourself: ‘Can I do something about this now? If yes then do it.
•If no, then write down when you are going to deal with the worry and what you
are going to do about it. For example: Tomorrow morning I am going to find 3
good quotations for each character.

1. Planning and Organisation:
•Make a revision guide that is realistic: 30 minute chunks of revision, 5-10 minute
breaks.
•You need to be strict with yourself ,but not hard on yourself.
•Make sure you plan in fun activities.
2. Breathing exercises to help let worries go.:
•If you feel a panic attack coming on, you need to control your breathing. This
practice is often done in yoga and is proven to help relax you.
•Close your eyes and concentrate on your breathing. Take a deep, slow breath in
and a long, slow breath out. Do this for 5 minutes.
•If thoughts or worries keep interfering don’t panic, just let them drift away and
think only of controlling your breathing.
•You can imagine sitting on a bench looking out to sea and watching the waves
roll in while you are breathing.
