BBQ Fun in The Sun

Personal Design Project

Concrete Speaker Project

The Brief:When the warm summer sun shines we all love to get together with friends and family for a BBQ. The design challenge is to develop innovative concepts for a pack to hold both food and drink refreshments to take round to a barbeque party. Whether it be beer or wine, steak or fish, bread or salad, this pack should incorporate three or more items together in a fun style carton pack.

During writing my specification for this project, I found it incredibly important to incorporate and to think about ergonomics every step of the way. I had looked into different ways the product can be held and used as well as how the user will be the product and how it will be packaged/assembled (if any). I looked into many different designs so that I could find something that is user friendly.

For my final design, I have developed a cylindrical shaped food and drink holder for buffet food at BBQ’s. My main concern when developing my designs that a lot of paper plates can often be flimsy and food can easily drop during windier weather. To stop this, I have designed a holder that will not only protect against the wind but it also has a central balancing point so that when the users hold the product, the product will not fall due to the weight. This product is ideal for both buffet food and BBQ food such as burgers with more than enough space to hold both. This meets my brief as it also has a compartment to hold a drinks can to your table.

The product would be mass produced and would be made from carton board. Similar to the material used in products such as warm milk and orange juice is kept in. This is to stop any juices from making the material flimsy and possibly break such as paper plates as an example.

The product would be sold in nets in packs with multiple of the product in. The nets can then be

easily assembled by the user before having a buffet/party.

The centre piece holds the drink(s) but also acts as a centre balance so that the product will not be weak in any parts due to the weight of the food.

I feel the strengths of this product is that it meets the specification as it holds food and drink. It is also very simple for the user to use both in assembly, use and waste of the product. The material that it is made from allows the product to be recycled after use making it environmentally friendly. The actual design of this product is very different to that on the market and I feel it would fit in the environment.

The Brief:The brief for my PDP project was to improve an existing product and to modify it so that it is made completely from renewable resources. For this project I looked at a range of products that were normally made out of plastic or metal and then researching into how I could modify them.

This product is a display stand used within schools, businesses and exhibitions. The main reason for doing this is that display stands are often made out of different plastics and metals to give the product a more modern look.

This display stands shows off 2D as well as 3D art and work. I found that there are often boards for user’s art and shelves but not normally both leaving a space in the market.

This product consists of shelves with wire hanging across to a pole. The shelves will be used to hold 3D models/products and art. The shelves will be held by dowels similar to furniture and can therefore be moved allowing space for different sized models. The wires will then hold the 2D work via clips which will hold them securely. The product will be moveable via wheels on the bottom of the product.

This product is made from a variety of materials, all of which are renewable and safe for the environment. I have looked at using wood for the shelves. This is because they are sturdy and can withstand the weight of 3D models. This often gives it a traditional look. Block board will be used for the base as it is strong and cost effective. Finishes can also be applied to this material. The wires which hold the 2D art are made from cotton and the pole which they are attached to is made from leather.

The Brief:“Your task is to design and manufacture a fully-functioning concrete speaker, complete with a bespoke stand.” At the start of the project I began to plan specification points for the design as it also had to fit a certain shape. This would help me further on in my design process.

After creating my speaker, I started to draw up some designs to fit that particular shape. After finding a shape I liked, I decided to develop the shape into different designs. Models of these where then made.

My final design took the shape of a skate ramp style shape with a dip for the speaker to fit into. I also added a hole for the phone to fit into so that it would not hand carelessly on the side of the speaker.

The material that the product would be made from would be medium density fibreboard. This is because it can be cost effective and also very easy to manufacture. A finish can also be applied to the material to make it more aesthetically pleasing.

With this design, the speaker can fit in the dip like a diamond or sit comfortably on the stand leaving a gap where the dip is. This will be fully up to the user.

My final design took on the Memphis style. I thought a design style like this fit as it contrasts the plain concrete colour and texture. Each side of the product was painted a different colour and they were all common colours in the Memphis movement.
