There are new videos available from 9:30 every day showing new sounds being taught for set 1, 2 and 3. Please refer to the speeds sounds charts in the back of your child’s planners (pages 108-109) for more information about the different sets. Set 1 - the bouncy vowels and the stretchy and bouncy consonants on the simple sounds chart Set 2 - the stretchy vowels on the simple sounds chart Set 3 – the additional sounds on the complex sounds chart * Please note, any modelling of handwriting in these videos does not follow our pre-cursive scheme. If your child writes any letters, please encourage them to use correct letter formation with the ‘whoosh ins’. Here is another useful link - how to say all the sounds: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkXcabDUg7Q

Watch ‘Storytime with Nick’ from Read, Write, Inc. These are films of well-loved stories read by Nick Cannon, a trained actor and teacher and a wonderful storyteller. A new story will be added to the RWI YouTube channel at 2pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday each week. They are ideal for Year 1 children. Storytime includes books by Tom Percival, Cressida Cowell, David Melling, Jeanne Willis, Judith Kerr, Oliver Jeffers and David Walliams. Most films will be available for the period of school closure. Listen here to the story of Jim and the Beanstalk by Raymond Briggs. Then answer these questions:
Did you enjoy the story? What was your favourite part? What part was your least favourite?
How is the story similar to the original story of Jack and the Beanstalk? How is it different?
Was Jim scared of the Giant at the start of the story? Why?
At the end of the story, why do you think Jim ran away and chopped the beanstalk down?
Is the Giant good at spelling? Can you mark his letter?

Activity 1:- Review, edit and improve
Read what you wrote in the first part (before half term). Does it make
sense? Did you remember full stops and capital letters? Could you
make it better by adding some adjectives? Look at the ‘Extra
Challenge’ column for other ways you could improve your writing.
Activity 2:- New writing
Watch video clips 5-9.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/school-radio/english-ks1-jack-and-the-
beanstalk-index/zn9hxyc
Tell the next bit of the story to someone in your family, then have a
go at writing it. Try to make it exciting!
Activity 3:- New writing
Finish watching the clips and add an ending to your story. It could be
the same or you could change it in some way.
Activity 4:- Review, edit and improve
Read your story and check that it makes sense. Did you remember full
stops and capital letters? Could you make it better by adding some
adjectives? Look at the ‘Extra Challenge’ column for other ways you
could improve your writing.
Extra things that will make your
writing even better:
Think about Mrs Wordsmith
words that we have used and try
to pop some into your work:
commotion
bicker
unruly
squabble
bulging
flabbergasted…
Do you need any question marks
or exclamation marks in your
writing?
Have you used any Year 1
common exception words? If so,
are they spelt correctly?
Have you chosen the correct
phonics ‘special friends’ to spell
other words?
Is your handwriting neat? Have
you formed your letters
correctly?
Maths
Our school has now subscribed to the White Rose Maths scheme.
This week we are learning about weight and mass and then capacity and volume.
Please click here and watch the Week 5, Day 4 Video, which introduces the weight and mass topic. Then
follow the Week 6 lessons.
The worksheets to support all these lessons are on the website. Look for the WRM (White Rose Maths)
pdf documents. There some Mastery Activities for those of you who would like more challenge.
There are also Friday Challenge activities. Have a go at a few of these. Focus on explaining how you found
an answer and why you think it is correct. Is it possible for some challenges to have more than one
correct answer?
Maths
Try these ‘Two Minute Challenge’ activities to practise your mental
recall of different number bonds. Start at Level 1. How many
questions can you answer correctly in two minutes? (You will need to
get your answers marked). Repeat it another day – can you improve
your score? If you score more than 30/40, move up a level.
There are 8 levels at the moment…let us know if you need higher
levels.
Some place value activities to
challenge you: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/place-
value/place-value-charts

Maths Please continue to practise your Maths Targets. If you have completed your current target, move on to
the next one. All the Year 1 targets (1-7) are on the school website.
If you master all of these, please work through the extension activities before starting the Year 2 targets
(8+).

Science Looking at Seasonal Change
Visit the SANG to observe the changes between seasons. Compare
what you see with the pictures from when we visited in the Autumn.
What is the same? What is different?
Can you identify any of the plants or trees you see there? You could
use these to help you:

your diary. Can you identify any of these on your bean plant?
leaves, stem or stalk, roots, flowers, petals, pods
Computing Internet Safety Work with an adult to look at this Buddy the Dog powerpoint story about how to use the internet safely and who to ask for help. Then have a go at the quiz!

Art/DT Get creative and have a go at making your own beanstalk for one of
your toys to climb up. Here’s one idea you could try which uses a
cardboard tube, green card, lolly sticks and cotton wool. Perhaps you
could number the leaves in steps of 2, 5 or 10…
Cooking Here’s a yummy jelly bean cookie recipe for you to try. If you don’t want to use jelly beans, you could try raisins or chocolate chips instead. https://www.allrecipes.com/recipe/271008/jelly-bean-cookies/

PSHE - Thinking of others Lots of you are doing really well learning at home. For some it’s a very tricky time. Many of us are missing our school friends and teachers. Take some time to think about a message you could send to the rest of your class. Write your message out and perhaps draw a picture too. Don’t forget to add your name! Then email it to Mrs Linkens by Friday 5th June. Please include your name and class. She will put all your messages into a slideshow and share it with your class.
RE - Key question for this half term - Is Shabbat important to Jewish children? Engagement lesson:
Sing along to one of these Days of the
Week songs - 1 or 2
Think about and discuss:
Which day is the most special
for you and why?
What do you do on a Saturday?
Who do you spend it with?
How does it differ from rest of the
week?
Play Charades – take it in turns to act
out something you would usually do
on a Saturday – can your family guess
what it is?
Geography For most of this half term we are going to be thinking about seaside places. This week we’d like you to learn
this vocabulary- beach, cliff, sea,
ocean, coast
Look at photographs from a visit
that your family has made to the
beach, or look at the one we have
saved. Can you use those words to
describe what you see?
Eg) The beach is made from sand
and stones. The cliffs are very
high.
Find the coastline on a map of the
UK. You could colour around it to
show where the sea is.
Challenge:
Can you name the countries within
the UK?
Can you name the capital cities?

PE Athletics skills Practise these rope skipping skills:
Skip on the spot turning the rope forwards – how many skips can you do in a minute?
Now try turning the rope backwards – can you do as many skips in a minute?
Can you run and skip? How far can you go in a minute? Practise these skills each day and keep a record of what you achieve – have you improved over the week? Extra PE clips you might like to try: https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/p06tmmvz/andys-wild-workouts (10 animal themed workouts around the world – 7 mins each) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwT5oX_mqS0 (fun dance – 3 mins) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbVr38Bhe7E (Joe Wicks workout – 5 mins) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_A_HjHZxfI (workout – 16 mins)
