Slide 1

Smiley recently graduated from police academy. And his first assignment is at the traffic department of Austin Police Station.Yay!! Now I get to wear police caps and drive around with sirens on!No more being stuck in traffic^-^Print 11,12, 20, 27, 28, 35,361Smiley was partnered up with experienced police named Grumpy. Grumpy said, Today is your observation day. Just watch what I do and follow exactly what Im doing. And, dont ask any questions Smiley and Grumpy rode to their assigned area, entrance of newly built fast lane on I-35.

Want to hear a story? A call came over the car's radio telling rookie and veteran police to disperse some people who were loitering. The officers drove to the street and observed a small crowd standing on a corner. The rookie rolled down his window and said, "Let's get off the corner."No one moved, so he barked again, "Let's get off the corner!"Intimidated, the group of people began to leave, casting puzzled glances in his direction.Proud of his first official act, the young policeman turned to his partner and asked, "Well, how did I do?""Pretty good," replied the veteran, "especially since this is a bus stop. Are you laughing? This isnt funny!

Fast Lane

This is exactly why we needed fast lane!Anyway, heres what to do. If their plate numbers have a Significant Figure of a day, they get to use the fast lane. But if not, they are so going to get a TICKET!

Uhh..what is the significant figure of a day?No Questions!!!Remember?Just watch and learn.Significant Figure of a Day is 3

Im so confused. I noticed some things but I still need help. What did you notice? What do you think significant figure is?You know what to do starting tomorrow. I will be positioned on the exit lane. You better filter out all the wrong cars before it gets to the exit!

Significant RulesAny non-zero digit is significantEx)123

Zeros between non-zero digits are significant.Ex) 4308Significant RulesZeros to the right of all non zero digits are only significant if a decimal point is shown.Ex)4300 vs. 4300.

Zeros appearing before a non-zero digit are not significant0.009Its your turn to be SmileyYou will be working with person sitting next to you.Protector sheet=individual white boardCar plates are going to be shown.Draw circle if it has appropriate number of significant figuresDraw X if it doesnt have appropriate number of significant figuresYou will have 30 seconds to decide. If you let the wrong car go, wrath of Grumpy will rain on you!!Significant Figure of a Day is 4

Why cant I use fast lane!! Whats wrong with my plate number!!!!Uhh..your plate number doesnt meet significant figure of a day. Let me see what I can do to help you out.

Hi. Grumpy. I have a question. There is thisblahblahblahArgggh. Another Question?Ok. I will tell you this only once so listen carefully. One of the ways to do it is by using rounding rule to make a new plate. If the numbers are 5 and up, it can be rounded up. Ex) 38 rounded to the nearest ten is 40If the numbers are less than 5, it can be round down. Ex) 33 rounded to nearest ten is 30This time, write new plate number on the white board.

Why bother with significant figures?

Because theres limited accuracy in the measurement! And, results need to reflect that!

Ex) Think about what you did for Candium lab..>mass of M&M) 10.043g>number of M&M) 3>average mass) 10.043/3=3.3476666666666666>but 3.3476666666666666 doesnt reflect the accuracy of balance.

Find your Significant one! Each of you are assigned with specific numbers. The number is on the yellow post-it within the folder. You have to go around and find someone with same number of significant figure as you have. When you find one, bring the post it and put it on the board. As a class, we will go over few of the pairs!

Attention to the police officers, there are too many cars in Austin and latest plate number is 10000000000000000000000. Whew. Its even hard to even read the number. So, we are going to write it in scientific notation so that numbers are shorter. Heres how you change them.1) Standard Scientific Notation is a number from 1 to 9 followed by a decimal and the remaining significant figures and an exponent of 10 to hold place valueEx)543=2) when the decimal is moved to the Left the exponent gets Larger, but the value of the number stays the same. Each place the decimal moves Changes the exponent by one (1). If you move the decimal to the Right it makes the exponent smaller by one (1) for each place it is moved.

Ex) 6000.*10^0

Write new plate number on the paper. You need to use all the rules we learned so far!!

What about when you need to add/subtract?To add/subtract in scientific notation, the exponents must first be the same. Then add the numbers. Exponents wont change. When measurements are added or subtracted, the answer can contain no more decimal places than the least accurate measurementEx) (3.01 x 102) + (6.4 x 103)=?What about when you need to multiply/divide?To multiply, find the product of the numbers, then add the exponentsTo divide, find the quotient of the number and subtract the exponents. When measurements are multiplied or divided, the answer can contain no more significant figures than the least accurate measurementEx) 71.86/13.1=?Ex) (2.4 x 102) (5.5 x 10 4)=?Scientific Notation WKST20 minutes to work on them.If you have any question, please ask them!Go over the answers

Why bother with scientific notation?

Because size of measurement that scientists use for calculation in their equation are huge or very small.

Ex) Speed of waves in Electromagnetic spectrum is300,000,000 m/s. If wavelength is 0.000000000001, what is frequency?
