MAY 2014MAY 2014MAY 2014
. We give thanks for
MOTHERS!
I am grateful for the staff, my
clergy partners, and the army of
volunteers who help make Holy Week
so special. And a special shout out to
Fran Finch, who provided the fantastic
reception following the Easter Vigil. A
new tradition is born! May you be blessed and inspired
during these Great Fifty Days......
Alleluia Christ is Risen – Yay
Jesus – The Lord is Risen Indeed!
Rev. David+
As we have engaged these
Great Fifty Days of the Easter Season
(Easter Sunday through Pentecost
Sunday), I give thanks for all of you
and for the wonderful experience we
shared during Holy Week this year.
As most of you know, I was
unfortunately hospitalized from
Monday through Thursday of Holy
Week, but you were in capable
hands as all of our staff rallied to pick
up the slack made by my absence. I encouraged you a few
weeks ago to “dance every dance” of
Holy Week, especially the Triduum,
and many of you did so. I have
received quite a few very positive
responses from many parishioners. I
hope everyone had a wonderful,
spiritual, and uplifting experience. I
know I did. I am so proud of you, the people of
St. Paul's. You showed up in large
numbers for Palm Sunday, with our
wonderful Passion Players, and all the
services from Thursday through
Sunday. Many of you experienced the
humble act of foot washing for the
first time, and quite a few told me
the Easter Vigil was a first for them
and the service was quite amazing. I
agree! Story telling and baptisms (5!)
by candlelight and the first Alleluia of
the season – these are beautiful ways
we celebrate our Risen Lord Jesus.
And as always our music was beyond
compare, what a gift Dr. Keith and
our choir are to us all.
Yay Jesus.....
and Yay St. Paul's!

Easter Day Sermon– please go to

Thank You!

Heard at the Listening Sessions…
What Do I Love About St. Paul’s? The music, the thought provoking sermons, the friendships formed, the
tradition, the diversity, intergenerational membership, Paul’s Place and
much more.
These were some of the comments gleaned at the
Listening Sessions
from more than 100 parishioners who attended the sessions.
The Search Committee is very grateful to the many people who
took the time to come talk to them personally about their thoughts
and feelings about St. Paul's and its future.
Here is some of what you had to say:
What do you think are the major challenges facing St.
Paul’s today?
“Avoid casting a mold of (the previous rector).” “Provide a linking system for newcomers to join ministries/
activities.” “An ability to attract young adults, those just out of college, and
young marrieds to replace older generations that have pro-
vided this parish with such generous funding and leader-
ship.”
“Rekindle the Stephen Ministry group.”
How do you envision St. Paul’s ten years from now? “I would like for St. Paul’s to still be the open, safe haven it is
now…(with) an active, involved youth group, …classes that
help me to strengthen, test, and preserve my faith, …the
refuge where I can go to find solace, and affirmation, and
friendship, the well from which I can draw courage, and the
springboard that pushes me out to do and be what I
should.”
“Innovative to stay competitive.” “National trends (point to) a smaller St. Paul’s with real chal-
lenges to provide funding for the needs of parishioners (and
others).”
What are the most important attributes to consider in our
search for a new rector? “Know how to handle money…utilize the budget…market the
church.”
“Recognize the importance of ministry to all ages.”
“Be able to grow in the position, not swell in it.”
“Not someone at the fringes of Episcopal norms.” “Not someone with a personal agenda on the outer edges of
the mainstream of Episcopal philosophy or practice.”
“No high church with all the bells and whistles.” “Leave politics out of the pulpit; we want to be aware and in-
volved in the issues of the day, but we do not want to be
told how to vote.” “Someone who can grow with us, learn with us, mature with
us.”
The Survey is open through
Sunday, June 1st! Only 200 surveys received so far
– please encourage everyone in
your household and all of our
snowbirds to go to: stpaulsdelray.org

1) Rector Search Committee Formed
The committee was constituted by the Vestry and
commissioned with the direction of the diocesan
Archdeacon for Transitional Ministry in late March
2014.
2) Established Leaders and a Plan
The Committee established leadership roles and a
plan for completion of the search.
3) Held Parish Listening Session
Throughout April and early May the Committee con-
ducted eight Listening Sessions in which more than
100 members of the congregation participated.
4) Conducted Parish-wide Survey
The Committee also designed a Parish Survey which
will be available until the end of May in both electron-
ic and paper formats (electronic responses strongly
encouraged).
5) Publish and circulate Parish Profile
The information gained in the Listening Sessions and
the Survey will inform the construction of the Parish
Profile and the Church Deployment Office Profile which
will be used to inform those persons interested in
applying for the Rector position about St. Paul's in
terms of who we are, what we value, and what we
are looking for in a Rector.
6) Review Applications
Applications will then be received over a suitable
period of time and vetted by the Diocese and
evaluated by members of the Rector Search
Committee.
7) Conduct Phone Interview with selected
Candidates
From these applications the Committee will se-
lect a number of candidates (6-8) for telephone
interviews.
8) Discern 3-4 final candidates
From these interviews a list of final candidates (3-
4) will be discerned and selected.
9) Meet candidates in person
Final candidates will meet for an extended period
(about 3 days) in Delray Beach with the Commit-
tee and Vestry.
10) Rank final candidates and submit to Vestry
The Committee will discern 1st through 3rd
choices in rank order and send the decision to
the Vestry for affirmation.
11) Bishop issues the call to the new Rector
The Vestry will notify the Bishop who will issue
the call to the new Rector.
