WILDERNESS CONCEPTUAL PAVILION . SPRING 201401
Inspired by a beaver dam and created using only embroidery floss, glue, and trace paper, the model attempts to capture the apparent chaos in an ordered way. An investigation of predictability in architecture, volumes of space are formed using a regulated system but also allowing for serendipitous occurrences and adjacency. The model is not intended for a specific site, but rather a tensile open air pavilion that could be imagined under many different conditions.
CHARLOTTESVILLE PUBLIC HOUSING . SPRING 201402
The apartment complex on a 32-acre site is generated by a necessity to rethink suburbia along the US-29 corridor in Charlottesville, Virginia. The project of 520 residential units functions in part as an investigation of the contradiction of suburban lifestyle: the desire for modern amenities and a convenient lifestyle and the necessity of densification and walkability. Each resident gets their own parking spot; how does driving up to your apartment change the way you live in it? There is built in flexibility to expand and customize units; how can gardens both create privacy and bring people together? A daycare for 40 families creates public space; how can the elderly, children, families, and college students live together in a way that benefits everyone?

VENICE BRIDGING TOURISM . FALL 201404
Venice, Italy is now coming to a crossroads in its impressive history, with global interest comes an incredible power of tourism that could either decay the city or be harnessed for something great. An old rope-building factory in the historic shipyard of the Venice Arsenale is thus re imagined to be a new gate into the old city. The center is conceived as a detail of a larger project where cruise ships dock onto a new island and sink into ship holds in order to pump water through a series of water filtration basins. By both mirroring the past of boat construction and addressing a current problem, their presence is both reduced and celebrated. The building itself serves as a stop along a new path to Piazza San Marco through Arsenale, combining nature, history, and the energy of tourists in a place that locals and visitors can both enjoy.

NEW YORK CITYMAGGIE’S LIBRARY . SPRING 201505
Sited along the Highline in Chelsea, New York City, the Maggie’s Library combines the programs of both a public branch library and a Maggie’s Centre - a place for cancer patients and affected families to seek counseling, friendship, and meditation. The contrasting programs created the need for visual and physical adjacency that respect both parties but also create an awareness of one another throughout the whole space. The library is conceived as a Chinese garden both as an homage to the Maggie Centre founder, Maggie Keswick, and her study of these spaces, as well as a tool to define visual adjacency. The building, like a Chinese garden, uses a focal point to define a variety of individual paths that look to each other and relate through view sheds and careful apertures.

PETERBOROUGH, NH MACDOWELL PERFORMANCE SPACE . FALL 201506
The Macdowell Colony in Peterborough, New Hampshire, is a place where artist, architects, writers, and other creative people can go to retreat from society and work in a peaceful yet convivial environment. The performance space focused on providing a stage and multi-purpose building for shows, practicing, and general gathering. The approach was to design a single joint first and develop it into a system that would guide the building’s form. Small cabins that provide single rooms for housing, storage, and other amenities and create an outdoor public space that can also be used to watch performances from another angle, allowing artistic creativity and flexibility.
