College Principal’s Report June

Dear Parents & Students,

As Term Two approaches an end, it is worth again reflecting on some of the many events that have taken place over the last month. The Bridgebuilders Business Breakfast which is fully reported on in the Mt Evelyn Campus report, is a fantastic event that is organised and run by our Mt Evelyn Advance Leadership class. Mid-Year Reports

Staff have been busily completing assessments on all student work for the first semester and are this week finalising the mid-year reports. These will be released online through our Compass Portal at the end of term and I hope all parents take the time to go over these with their children to discuss the positives and successes, as well as look at areas for improvement during the rest of the year.

Message posted on Compass May 30 Trivia Night

Many thanks to the PFA and others who helped organise and run our recent Trivia Night at the Mt Evelyn Campus. It was a great night out and a huge success for our fundraising efforts. Thanks also to those who were able to attend and I’m happy to say that my own table ‘The Griffinati’ were winners on the night! Darren Trippett College Principal

From the Mooroolbark Campus Principal

It has been a busy term so far at the Mooroolbark Campus. The last few weeks have seen our students doing their mid-year exams. It has been really pleasing to see so many of our students working hard with study and preparation and putting in their best effort for all these tests. Here are some highlights of a few of the things that have happened this term.

Farm School – Semester 1

In Semester 1 a group of our Year 9 students have been working towards completing a Certificate 1 in Land Management at the Farm School in Woori Yallock. We have been very fortunate to build a great partnership with the team at Options and send along Year 9 students to undertake this course and learn some great skills in gardening, landscaping and local indigenous culture. Congratulations to all the students: Daniel Bennett, Bianca Black, Jack Eastwood, Denis Gogoase, Aiden Higgins, Nick Masters, Dylan Pane, Rubie Stannard and Jackson Summerton-Cartledge who have taken part and will be awarded their Certificate 1 at the end of the term.

Our College Captain visits Wandin North Primary School

On the morning of May 16, Katherine Rosevear and I were the special guests of Wandin North Primary School at their Leadership Breakfast. Katherine, being a former student from the school, was able to share her story that included her leadership experiences at Yarra Hills, particularly in the areas of Music. A special thanks to the Wandin North for inviting us, and for Katherine for being such a wonderful ambassador of the college.

Year 12 College Captains – Parliament House visit

Brenton Millott, our Head of Senior School, along with 2 of our College Captains, Katherine Rosevear and Katherine Rolston attended our Parliament House in Melbourne on the invitation of Bruce Atkinson, the President of the Legislative Council and member for the Eastern Region. Our leaders got to hear from a number of politicians and tour the parliament, as well as mingle with other school leaders from a number of secondary schools in the eastern suburbs.

Year 10 Social

On Friday 8 June our Year 10s gathered at Chateau Wyuna for the annual Year 10 Social. All the students made a real effort, dressing up and arriving in style. One of our Mooroolbark students even arrived on a horse! What a statement Talia Paterson. It was great to see so many students and staff dancing up a storm. It was a great night. I big thank you to Demos Koullacas and David Audesho for all their organisation, and for the dedicated students and staff who made the night one to remember.

Introduction Rehearsals are now in full swing!

It has been great to drop in and see the rehearsals for the School Production (Mary Poppins) that are now in full swing. There is a real buzz amongst the cast every Monday and Wednesday nights as the cast rehearse the show. They will shortly be moving to Mt Evelyn Campus to begin the rehearsing in the theatre space. I urge families to book early for Production tickets when they become available. Remember the dates for the production are 15, 16, 17 & 18 August.

Student Representative on School Council

Congratulations to Harley Livingstone, one of our Year 12s who was successful in being voted in as the Mooroolbark Campus student representative on School Council. Harley will be joining council at our Tuesday 19 June meeting. We look forward to Harley sharing his knowledge and expertise on Council over the next year.

Trivia Night Saturday 16 June

A very big thank you Robyn Dew and our fabulous team of parents in our Parents and Friends Association who worked tirelessly to arrange the Trivia Night on Saturday June 16. We are very grateful for the PFA team lead by Sheryn Holloway, Linda Martin, Sonja Pawsey and Kate Heintze. All money raised from the night will go towards supporting the installation of Shade Sails at the Mooroolbark Campus.

From the Mt Evelyn Campus Principal

Once again time is flying and students have now completed NAPLAN and their exams so it has been a very big term. Staff worked hard to prepare students for these exams and I congratulate all students with the maturity they demonstrated in completing them. Staff have now provided feedback to students with their results as well as how they can improve for the future. Students have also completed their Attitude to School surveys which provides us with valuable information as to how they feel about their schooling and learning.

Another successful Business Breakfast thanks to our Advance students!

We are so proud of our Advance students who, under the guidance of Beck and Phil from Bridgebuilders have organised a fantastic Business Breakfast. Around 150 business people from the local and surrounding areas came together to network with each other and listen to Gavin Smith (Chairperson and President of Bosch Australia). Our

students organised every aspect of this break-fast from the setup, sponsors and facilitating this great event. It was such a hit with all those who attended. Many approached us to ask if the hosts were our students. We proudly said yes! Many compliments were made throughout the morning about how profession-al our students were. Congratulations to all those involved, thank you Beck and Phil for your guidance and thank you Chris Shimmen

for your support.

We now have students on school council! The Department of Education have mandated that students are represented on school council. It is an exciting step forward to ensure we have the student voice as part of our school council. All students had the opportunity to be nominated for this position. Two positions were available to ensure both campuses were represented. Six students were nominated at Mt Evelyn Campus and after the ballot vote by all students, Jack Randall from Year 7 was our successful candidate. Congratulations Jack, we’re proud you will representing Mt Evelyn Campus.

Year 10 social was another great night!

The year 10 social is always a great way for both campuses to come together and enjoy a night of music, dancing and some real fun. It’s often a transformation when students get dressed up in their best outfits. Many staff attend this event as they love to see students away from the class room in such a social occasion. I thoroughly enjoyed the night! Thank you Dave Audesho for organising the event.

ALOHA! Our Trivia night went tropical

After many months of planning by our PFA, the Hawaiian Trivia night arrived. It was such a fantastic night with many tables getting into the theme of the night. A special mention goes to our best dressed table, Janine Lovett and the other Integration Aides who all came as Hawaiian pizzas! It was hilarious! The Munns table looked like they had just returned from Hawaii – very tropical! Our quiz masters, Bryan & Jeanette once again did a fantastic job in delivering 7 rounds of questions, some being easy and others quite tricky. We played a number of games and had so many raffles and silent auctions. A huge thank you to our PFA for the months of planning and ongoing support they did to create such a great night. Thank you to Rebecca Dunn and her team for setting up, thank you to the many sponsors who supported us including Yarra Hills staff and families who donated some awesome prizes and finally thank you to everyone who attended and dug deep to help us to raised nearly $4,500 for the night!!!

Year 10 Driver Education Students from the Mt Evelyn Campus recently completed their ‘Driver Instruction’ sessions at the METEC driving complex in Colchester Rd where they learnt how to drive manual vehicles and to develop their ‘on road’ driving skills. Most of the students started out with low rated driving standards during the first week as for many it was their first experience at driving. The driving ability and skill awareness improved in each of the students during the second week where they were able to obtain greater confidence in handling their vehicles and they were successfully obtaining higher results for their driving skills.

Ranges Tec Trade Taster Day

On Monday May 7, all students from Year 9 at Mt Evelyn went to Ranges Tec in Lilydale to have a “taste“ of four different trades. Students walked from Lilydale Station and were divided into groups.

All students had a go at furniture making, in which they experience a CNC machine and used a variety of tools to make a small tool box.

Students also built a small stud wall in which they learnt to use a Paslode gas nail gun to join the framing timber. This is one powerful tool and required a number of attempts to get it right. Students also engaged in a hammer and nail competition.

In the Engineering taster students were shown the engineering workshop before getting to watch a lathe demonstration. Students then created their own dog tags to keep.

Most students also had a go in the Hospitality room where they were instructed by “Chef Glen” who demonstrated how to make corn fritters with avocado salsa. Students enjoyed their creation and all and all have a very fun “taste “ of different trades.

The hands on day was well enjoyed by staff and students alike who all got to take home a sense of pride at making some things from the trade. Staff and students were equally impressed with the friendly welcome and barbeque lunch. Shane Hart and Connor Wilson (9L)
