2018 School Day changes

Following a great deal of deliberation and consultation, we have decided to make some changes to the school day model that will apply for 2018 classes. This decision has been made in order to simplify some of the more unusual aspects of our school day, such as different length periods on Thursdays, as well as to address some issues relating to staff yard duties and the implementation of the new 2017 Victorian Govern-ment Schools Agreement (VGSA). Looking at a number of models, we have been able to settle on one that does not change the starting or finishing times for the school. Please see details on the table below:

Points to note:

Start and finish times the same (students should still aim to be on site by 8:50)

4 x 75 minute classes each day (no Home Group or 50 minute periods)

Both Recess and Lunch breaks are 35 minutes (equal length)

Each week is the same now (no Week 1 or 2)

Some subject areas have had minor changes to the number of periods taught per fortnight

Years 7-10 will have a period (75 minutes) devoted to Home Group/Pastoral/Community each week, rather than a few

Minutes each morning. This is with a ‘Home Group Teacher’.

VCE students will have 2 designated periods available in the week for staff to run assemblies/seminars/support and tutoring, separate to (and not interrupting) their core classes.

We believe that this new arrangement of the day and classes will be a beneficial change for our students and staff. If you have any queries regarding this, please feel free to contact the office directly

Yarra Hills Community Art Show

Shortly before the end of term, I was proud to attend our own ‘Yarra Hills Community Art Show’, held at our Mt Evelyn

Campus. This show, which was originally an initiative from our Arts Learning Area in collaboration with the Rotary Club,

has grown over recent years to become a significant arts and cultural event for the Mt Evelyn district. Art on display

included categories for local commercial artists, Yarra Hills’ students and staff and also a category recognising talents of

local primary school students. Awards were presented by dignitaries including Member for Evelyn Christine Fyffe MP.

Christine’s protégé Bridget Vallence was also in attendance (in photo below) and very supportive of our event. Many

thanks to all who contributed to this fantastic event, especially to the Art staff who ran and organised the show.

Congratulations!

Mooroolbark Lions Club ‘Youth of the Year’ Awards 2017

Samantha Donazzon of Year 11 was a finalist in the Mooroolbark Lions Club ‘Youth of the Year’ Awards last week. Sam presented an excellent speech, speaking wonderfully and passionately about the issue of human trafficking. Congratulations Sam.

From the Mooroolbark Campus Principal Welcome back to Term 4. This year has raced along and it is hard to believe we are in Term 4 already. As I write this, our Year 12s are in their last week of secondary schooling. I am sure for parents it is hard to believe, and it possibly doesn’t feel that long ago they were starting school in Prep. We will be farewelling them formally as a school community at our Campus Assembly. They will also be celebrating on their final day of school, with a number of activities planned by the Senior Team, Brenton Millott and Courtney Jordan, and of course we will have our Valedictory dinner in November. Queensland Camp

In the last week of term, I had the pleasure of attending the Year 9 Queensland Camp for the first time. It was a great experience, with many highlights. We headed off on Sunday September 17 nice and early for the big trek up through NSW and then into Queensland. Whilst some got some sleep on the overnight trip, many looked a little weary when we arrived at the Sports Centre in Runaway Bay on the Gold Coast. We didn’t have long before we gathered up our bathers and towel and headed off to Wet n’ Wild. Lots of big thrill seeking wa-ter slides, some lazy rivers and just relaxing was in order. The next day we went surfing (and kayaking) enjoy-ing one of the many beaches that stretch along the Gold Coast, where many learnt to stand up and ‘surf the big ones’!

Movie World was the next day and for most of the students, it was the highlight. The thrill seekers enjoyed all the roller-coasters, with the best being the newly opened Hyper-Coaster, one of the fastest in the Southern Hemisphere. Rock-climbing was a real hit with many of the students, as they tested their strength, agility and their fear of heights. On the final day we undertook some retail therapy before the long bus ride home, and safely back into the arms of parents.

Thank you to all the students for their enthusiasm as well as being so friendly and welcoming to everyone. A big thank you must go to Robyn Dew for her fabulous organisation of the camp, and to the staff, Amy Cahill,

Steph Conroy, Ellen Cosgrove and Will Johnson for coming on the trip.

Year 10 Work Experience

It was great to see our Year 10 students experiencing life in the workforce for the last week of Term 3. I am sure there would have been some weary students by the end of the week! I certainly hope for most students it was a positive experience that gave them an opportunity to trial an area of interest to pursue in the future.

Facilities at Mooroolbark Campus

The grounds and facilities had a bit of a face-lift over the break in many areas, both inside and outside:

The C-Building got a fresh coat of paint on the walls

The external walls of the Gymnasium were cleaned thoroughly

A gravel path/area was built into the sides of the locker bay at the end of the C-Building

The Parents and Friends Association (PFA) also donated some money for the purchase and planting of 3 shade trees (Golden Ash) which were planted in the grass area in front of the Synthetic Pitch. These are a strong, quick growing deciduous tree that will provide some much needed shade for students in the warmer months, once they are established and grow. A big thank-you to the PFA!

Mango Drive

Yes, the PFA Mango Drive is on again. The forms have been sent home (as well as posted on Compass). Make sure you get your forms into the General Office by Friday October 27 to avoid disappointment. Appointments & Early Leavers – Advice to Parents

Just a reminder to families that IF your child is required to leave early, please ensure your child brings a note or you have approved this on Compass prior. It is also important, that regardless of permission given, that the student reports to the office at the beginning of the day to alert our Office Staff when they are required to leave early. Whilst we know there are times when it is an emergency pick-up, it is very challenging to get students out of class without notice during the day. We appreciate your support. From the Mt Evelyn Campus Principal

Welcome back everyone to Term 4!! I hope everyone had a relaxing break and looking forward to hearing student ’s holiday stories. Last term finished well with our year 10 students having a wide variety of work experience whilst some of our year 9 students enjoyed the Queensland sun and others worked their way around the city to create an A-Z of Melbourne. Whilst I often say every term is busy, Term 4 will be particularly busy with transition activities starting for our 2018 intake. As well as this, all classes will continue with their assessments and gear up for preparing students for their exams later in November. It will be here before we know it! Our Year 10 students will also be transitioning to senior school at the Mooroolbark campus with a number of activities already lined up for them.

Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships

Thank you to the many families who have returned the student and parent consent for the Melbourne University surveys. Some parents had concerns about the survey and I was thrilled they contacted me and other staff members to clarify. If there are any more consent forms to be handed in at school or emailed, please do so before the end of next week, so I can forward these to Melbourne University. Equally if there are still any concerns regarding this survey, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Yarra Hills commitment to the Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships is a positive step for our students to grow into responsible and respectful members of society in the future and to be people we are all proud of. To give some further background of this program, Respectful Relation-ships is about tackling family violence through education.

Just like other major social and health issues such as smoking and road toll, evidence shows that family violence can be prevented by working across the whole population (in this case, all schools) to address the attitudes, beliefs and knowledge that support violence. The Victorian Government is investing $21.8 million to deliver Respectful Relationships and as part of this initiative Victorian schools will be supported to review their practices and policies, and model respectful relationships and gender equality across the whole school community.

A good education is about more than simply getting good marks. It is about becoming a member of society and succeeding in life – knowing how to build respectful relationships is key to achieving this. When young people build positive relationships with their teachers and peers they feel safer and happier at school, are more resilience and have positive social attitudes. Positive relationships increase a young person’s sense of social connectedness and belonging to school and family, and result in better health and academic outcomes.

Further information about Respectful Relationships is available on the Department of Education and Training website: www.education.vic.gov.au/respectfulrelationships Teachers will also be supported to deliver the initiative with age-appropriate teaching and learning materials. These evidence-based materials are designed to enable teachers to develop student’s social and emotional capabilities, build positive, healthy and respectful relationships, make responsible decisions and create positive gender relations. The initiative will also provide resources to best support young people who are affected by family violence.

Parents are most welcome to contact staff if they wish to see the specific details of the curriculum in relation to this program. This YouTube link explains clearly the basis behind the program. It was originally created by Our Watch just prior to the Respectful relationships program was released. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB7Pkcue9Rk If parents have any further questions or concerns regarding this program, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Rosie Batty, CEO of the Luke Batty Foundation “the school community is an essential part of social reform by modelling a culture of respect through the whole school, not just by teaching respect in the classroom”.

Yarra Hills Year 7 Boys Basketball Well done to the Year 7 boys basketball A, B & C teams that competed in their round robin matches at the Knox Basketball Stadium last term. All teams demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and played at a competitive level with the B team finishing 1

st in their pool and 3

rd

overall. The boys are to be commended for their efforts on the day as they came up against very competitive teams, many with multiple representative level basketball players. A special thanks to the Year 9 and 10 coaches who provided advice and encouragement throughout the day!

7M serve up a great Devonshire Tea!

Late last term 7M put on a Devonshire Tea for our parents and friends. They began by preparing all the scones for the day then set up the tables ready for our guests. All students put their best foot forward to impress everyone by present-ing the scones professionally and doing their best to serve coffee and tea like true waiters. Kenny was our head chef who greeted all our guests and invited them to sit and enjoy. I was so pleased with the efforts of all our students who performed their duties so well for our guests. They too were impressed with our Devonshire Tea. Well done 7M!

Our Snowy River students return home

After 9 weeks of exploring, discovering, learning and growing, our 6 adventurous Snowy River Campus students return to Yarra Hills this term. I was fortunate to visit them in Marlo late last term to see the presentation of their community

learning project. They did a fantastic job and very passionate about making a difference in young people. Their project centred very much on getting people active in the community to prevent them from possibly getting involved in drugs and consequently affect their mental state. Research shows that students who are active and involved in sport or similar activities are less likely to be drawn into drugs. Our Snowy River students are keen to get this message out to our Yarra Hills community so stay tuned for future events!

Community Connections is making its mark! Year 7 Mt Evelyn Community Connections class have been extremely busy last term starting with visiting Mt Evelyn Primary School and speaking to the grade 6 students about transition from primary to secondary school. Our students spoke incredibly honestly and confidently which inspired many primary school to ask many insightful questions. Then students were then welcomed with open

arms into the prep classes to use their imagination and build master-pieces. This made some real connections with the prep students.

This class has also been working with the police, on our second edition of the Neighbourhood Watch newsletter. In this edition, students created a survey that explored students attitudes and knowledge about the program. They drew interesting conclusions about what Yarra Hills students think about the program in terms of what they would like to see changed. Our involvement has been recognised in the Victoria Sentinel, the official Neighbourhood Watch magazine – well done year 7’s!!

Yr 7 Health get a dose of good hygiene! Mt Evelyn year 7 Health classes were fortunate to have our school nurse speak on hygiene as part of our puberty course. Students were able using UV light to see where they did not wash their hands correctly, which left many students surprised! It was quite the eye opener. They were also given a fantastic sample kit for students to use that had sample shampoos, body wash and deodorant.

Our vegetable patch gets a new round of vegetables Late last term a number of Year 7 students worked throughout the day to replenish our vegie patch. Many of the plants that were planted earlier in the year have produced a great deal of vegies but now it is time to replace them with new plants. The students did a great job in making these tubs look alive again – well done!

SRC have been busy!!

The SRC organised a favourite bookcharacter dress up day combined with a footy fan day as a celebration of Term 3 coming to a close. Students had the choice either to dress up or participate in the parade where our judge Shane Hart was given the difficult task of

selecting a winning costume. That award went to Hailey Hackett of year 10. The Footy fans were invited to join in a footy match which due to a muddy oval was held in the Gym with Mr Koullacas. Students had a fantastic day and looked amazing. Thanks to all the staff and SRC students who helped make this a fun field event.

Goodbye Annabelle

The Year 7 students organised a fantastic farewell surprise party for their friend Annabelle, who moved house to Hastings. Students organised cards, games and gifts and brought party food to say goodbye. We wish Annabelle all the best for her new adventure.

2017 Art Show focuses on the local community In the second last week of Term 3 our fourth Community Art Show showcased the talent from many of our community members at our Mount Evelyn campus. There were works from primary and secondary school students on show along with works from established and emerging artists from the local community. The Art Show had an official opening on the Friday night which was very well attended and interest was not dampened by the inclement weather that spring had in store for the event! Our talented music students performed for the event and catering was created and served by our Yarra Hills students. Christine Fyffe, the member for Evelyn, officially opened the art show. Many students received awards for their amazing artworks and community artists were also recognised for their talents. This year, awards at the Yarra Hills Community Art Show were presented in three main categories: Yarra Hills Secondary College student awards, Primary School awards and Community artist awards.

Ali Griffin from Three Stories Artspace in Healesville was the judge for community artists’ awards. The following Yarra Hills Secondary students received awards: Ellissa Marcucci – Junior school award; Langing Bao- Middle school award; Calleen Taylor – Year 11 VCE award and Lily Par Mawi Tluang Neih received the Year 12 VCE award. Yarra Hills SC also runs an art extension program at two local primary schools. Ashleigh Edwards from Birmingham PS won the Year 3 & 4 award for her cat water-colour paintings inspired by the artist Andy Warhol, and Claire Bextream won the Year 5 & 6 award. Mount Evelyn Primary also had students receive awards with Ruby Paola winning the Year 3 & 4 award and Chloe Tatlow receiving an award for her Year 5 & 6 Arkley-inspired canvas. The Principal’s award for the primary school section of the art show was awarded to Tahlia Goodman from Birmingham PS.

The following community artists were awarded for their talents: Mia Pensa and Tom Brooker- community awards, Elly Melbourne YHSC- Principal’s award, Sandra Dare-traditional art, Lisa England- contemporary art, Matthew Stephens - photography, Ian George and Robbie Bechaz - sculpture and Louise Tesoriero won the ‘Best in Show’ award.

All art show award winners received a range of prizes which were made possible through the sponsorship by local community businesses and organisations. We would like to thank the following sponsors again for their generosity: Bendigo Bank, Yarra Ranges Council, Lilydale Rotary Club, Cavalier Art Supplies, Croydon Camera House, Event Communication Solutions, Ray White Real Estate, Art With Distinction, Holy Grill, Marbry Craft Supplies and Yarra Hills Secondary College. This year the Yarra Hills Community Art Show continued the tradition of showcasing the talents of our very young citizens, together with emerging artists and with those artists who are already well known in our community. The Yarra Hills Community Art Show has certainly become an annual celebration of the creativity and talents within our community.

We look forward to celebrating art in the community again with you next year!
