Yarbrough Public School February 2016 Volume 11 Issue 6 Lobo Pride The Oklahoma State Department of Education held its first-ever Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council meeting January 14th in the Blue Room on the second floor of the Oklahoma State Capitol. The group was formed by State Superintendent of Public Instruction Joy Hofmeister to provide a forum for student voices and concerns. The group is part her larger initiative to give voice to the many stakeholders in public education so that meaningful reforms may be developed. Yarbrough High School student Kaden Lopez was one of the 67 students selected to be a member of Superintendent Joy Hofmeister's Student Advisory Council. Lopez is a member of Yarbrough’s junior class, and active in many sports and activities at the school. Lopez had to be nominated by superintendent, and complete a detailed application with two further references. Lopez explained that the group’s first meeting has already discussed many issues including cyber-bullying, and suggested changes to the state’s End-of- Instruction requirements. He also commented the many members of the group spoke against the current evaluation systems that penalize teachers for student’s failures on mandated standardized testing, and spoke for the need to increase teacher pay. The group will meet again in April.
