FROM THE SCHOOL HEALTH CENTRE
Reminder to Parents: Prescribed Medication and Non-prescribed medications.
When a medical practitioner has prescribed medication that must be administered while a child is
at Yanco Agricultural High School, parents/carers must:
• notify the school
• provide up to date information as required (see attached Medication Letter
• supply the medication and any 'consumables' necessary for its administration in a
timely manner.
• Confirm that medication has been received by the Health Centre.
NSW Health advises that ‘over the counter’ medication may still be harmful and that schools
should follow the same procedures for non-prescribed medications as for prescribed medications.
ALL medication must be held at the Health Centre.
Parents should contact the school to ensure both the documentation and medication have been
submitted to the school Health Centre every time a child returns to school and every time there is
a change in medication or dose.
Please find attached to this newsletter a copy of the required Medication Letter.
2018 RIVERINA MURRAY VET IN SCHOOLS (VETiS) STUDENT OF THE
YEAR LACHLAN CARNEY
On Friday the 8th of June 2018 I had the
pleasure of accompanying Lachlan Carney to
the 2018 NSW Training Awards (Riverina
Region). This night showcases the
achievement of people undertaking
Vocational Education and Training
throughout the Riverina Murray districts.
Lachlan had been nominated by Yanco
Agricultural High School in the VET in
Schools Student of the Year Category, as he
exemplifies everything that is expected by a
student undertaking VET subjects. Lachlan
had to attend a local interview where he was
asked to demonstrate his knowledge of the
VET world and discuss how it differed from
traditional education pathways. At the awards
presentation, Lachlan was awarded the top
gong – which was presented by Deputy Prime
Minister The Hon Michael McCormack MP. Lachlan will now represent the Riverina Region at the
State Finals later in the year.
Lachlan is currently in Year 12 studying for his HSC, and is completing three VET subjects as part
of his pathway into the world of work. He has a real affinity for competency based learning and
ensures that he strives for excellence and industry
standard in all that he does.
Lachlan chose this pathway as these three courses relate
to his future career aspirations of being a farm manager,
contract business owner and then ultimately a farm
owner. The qualifications that he departs school with
shall enable him to get a foothold in the agricultural
sector and possess the fundamental skills that are
required to succeed.
Lachlan enjoys working on the family farm and
practices skills learnt at every opportunity. He has
relished mandatory work placements, and used it as a
platform to further engage with industry and learn skills
in the areas of water use efficiency, plant variety
genetics, tillage methods, and livestock handling.
Lachlan attributes his intrigue and continued passion for
the agricultural sector to his to enjoyment and
involvement in the VET frameworks at a specialist
agricultural High School. He takes on board all feedback and applies this to new situations, often
demonstrating to peers his high level of skill, which ultimately enhances their learning and
demonstrates his ability to work well in a team environment.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Another term has come to an end amongst a flurry of learning, extracurricular activities, broken
water pipes, examinations, flu, broken bones and report writing.
A big thank you to students, staff and families for their participation and support throughout this
term. This Newsletter and the School Facebook page will give you a brief glimpse of the
achievements and activities of our school community during the second half of Term 2.
Thursday 5th July we commenced the day celebrating and acknowledging the achievements of our
students across all year groups especially in the academic arena. The school wishes and encourages
all students to be the best they can be at all times and strive to expand their knowledge and skills.
Following the Commendation Assembly Year 10 and their parents had the opportunity to gain
greater knowledge regarding subject selection for senior study; Higher School Certificate
requirements; Record of School Achievement, ATAR; Vocational and Educational Training
subjects and the pathways they create. Thank you to the YAHS staff who presented and Libby
Trembath (Senior Pathways Officer) for their assistance and advice to the Year 10’s on this day.
The end of Term 2 provided the opportunity for Parents to discuss with Staff their child’s
/children’s learning, achievements and direction for the future. The saying ‘It takes a village to raise
a child’ applies also to their learning and development. Parents and staff working together with the
students will enable them to achieve their potential.
Performance night ensured that Term 2 concluded on a creative and positive note. Congratulations
to all the students, staff and community members who performed and provided support back stage.
Thank you to all the parents and friends who attended to encourage and support their endeavours.
Maybe next year there might be a parent performance.
Term 3 will see a lot of conclusions and many beginnings. Year 12 have their final term of
secondary schooling to focus on early entry applications, HSC Trial Examinations and the
excitement of their quickly approaching future after school. Year 11 will conclude their Preliminary
courses in Term 3 and take over the leadership mantle from Year 12. Congratulations to the current
Year 12 team who have actively provided a range of activities and leadership for the school. At the
same time Year 10 face the daunting decision choosing their subjects for senior study and preparing
to take on more leadership opportunities.
Thank you to the parents who have provided us with positive feedback to assist us with refining our
policies and processes to better provide for our students. We hope you will continue to work with us
to build on and improve our school.
As Term 2 concludes it is important that we all take time to rest and revitalise ready for a hectic
term three.

CAPTAINS TRIP TO SYDNEY
Lindsay Brown and Georgina Hughes travelled
to Sydney, accompanied by Miss Kim Weller,
for a Government House Leadership program.
We flew down on Wednesday 27th June,
spending the afternoon looking around
Circular Key, Barangaroo and Darling Harbour
then enjoying a movie in George Street
Cinema.
On Thursday, before we arrived at Parliament
House, we visited “Sunrise” television show
where we were lucky enough to meet and get
pictures with the Sunrise cast. After that we
arrived at NSW Parliament house we were
joined with other School Captains from NSW. We were spoken to by local members about
leadership and their roles, with good advice about staying true to your words. We had a tour
throughout Parliament House seeing the Upper (red) house and Lower (green) house and were able
to sit in the positions of the NSW leaders.
After lunch we headed to Government House
in Palace gardens where we were shown around
the house and the significance and events that
occurred in these rooms. Governor David
Hurley explained this role of Governor and the
importance of his role. Mrs Hurley sang “You
are My Sunshine” to make all our days brighter
and happier. Afternoon tea was with Governor
David Hurley where we were able to talk and
interact between the other captains. It was a
great experience which was worthwhile and a
massive thank you to Miss Weller for
organising and taking us to Sydney.

NEW STAFF TERM 2 , 2018
CRAIG MAHER – Deputy Principal
I began my teaching career in Griffith as a PDHPE Teacher in 1988. Returning to the Riverina, and
to such a school as Yanco Ag, as Deputy Principal (Day) has allowed me to reacquaint myself with
friends and family I had not been able to see much in the past years. Over the past thirty years I
have taught at schools in the Riverina (Albury, Griffith and Corowa), as well as across schools in
the Central Coast and Hunter regions. I look forward to being a part of the Yanco family and
following the local Australian Rules (I’m an ex Griffith Swan) and playing a bit (a lot) of Golf on
the weekends.
DERUSHA NAIDOO - Head Teacher of Teaching and Learning
My formal qualifications include a Bachelor of Psychology and Masters of
Education (Secondary). During my time teaching I have always taken pride
in improving the level of academic achievement of students in both internal
and external examinations.
My vision for Yanco Agricultural High School, is to further students’
knowledge of a range of skills which will allow them to achieve academic
success in all learning areas. I look forward to hosting workshops and
learning opportunities for all year levels. The skills covered so far with year
11 and 12 workshops include: Mind Mapping, Effective use of Flash Cards, Introduction to
ALARM (an extended response scaffolding tool). I look forward to working with students, staff and
parents in the future to build the capacity of all students here at Yanco Agriculture High School.
TARA ARNALL – Head Teacher Welfare Girls
I wish to introduce myself as the new Head Teacher Welfare Girls at Yanco
Agricultural High School. I bring to this position, 10 years of teaching
experience, having most recently taught at Batlow Technology School. With
a PDHPE background, I have a passion for student welfare and building and
maintaining positive relationships.
I was born and bred in Adelong, and completed my university studies at
CSU Bathurst. At the completion of my studies I began my teaching career
at Goulburn High School. Having taught at Batlow for 7.5 years, I was
ready for a new chapter and challenge, and was successful in gaining my position at Yanco.
I enjoy being active, and engaging in physical activities: my hobbies include playing rugby union,
fitness, water skiing and spending time with my family. I look forward to working closely with all
members of the Yanco family to create a positive, safe and supportive environment.
JESSICA RICHARDSON – Music Teacher
Hi, my name is Jessica Richardson. I graduated last year from Southern
Cross University in Lismore where I completed my Bachelor of
Contemporary Music/Bachelor of Education (Secondary). I grew up in the
Newcastle area and have a love for all things music. I am very excited to be
teaching in such a unique school as this and look forward to becoming part
of the Yanco Ag family.
YEAR 12 DEBATING
On Wednesday June 20th the Year 12 debating team
participated in the Regional Final of the Premier’s Debating
Challenge. The team, made up of Joel Jenkins, Lindsay
Brown, Sunny Oxley and Noel Williams versed Kooringal
High School in a VC debate. The teams debated on whether
the government and police should be able to access our
metadata whenever they want. The boys were on the
negative side and presented some strong arguments and
rebuttals. After a hard fought debate, the boys were named
the winners and will progress on to the next stage of finals
next week. Congratulations boys!
Hannah Jolley | Teacher
CHESS
On June 12, the chess team versed Wade HS. Neither team was able to travel on this day, so the
games were played online. Joel Jenkins enjoyed a rapid victory, as did Noel Williams. George Clark
earned a tough draw, and Lindsay Brown achieved his first competitive victory! Overall, YAHS ran
out comfortable victors 3.5 - 0.5. We hit the road to take on Lake Cargelligo Central School on July
2nd in the 5th round.

They lost the first three games;
however, they never gave up and won
their last game against Junee 6-3.

TAS REPORT
NATIONAL SHORTHORN SHOW AND SALE
Yanco Shorthorn Stud offered three sires for
sale at the 2018 National held in Dubbo over
the long weekend in June. The bulls we
presented were of outstanding quality and
that was reflected in the judging ring with
Judge Stephen Peake of Barraba agreeing
and awarding Yanco Mustang M11 first
prize. In what can only be described as a
tough season to be breeding and selling
bulls, it was a buyers’ market and there was
plenty of
value in
the bulls
we had in the sale ring. Yanco sold two bulls to average $4500.
Thanks to the team who gave up there long weekend to attend the
bull sale. It was a great few days interacting with other shorthorn
stud breeders and commercial cattlemen. The boys were a credit
to themselves and YAHS for the way they presented and
promoted the school and for their knowledge of the breeding
program we run back here at school. We now turn our focus to
the 2019 draft, and have our fingers crossed for some widespread
rain! Thanks to the successful purchasers of our genetics, and we
wish them all the best with the offspring.
Sam Thomas (Stud Captain), Hamish Jenkins and Lachlan West
HOLBROOK SHEEP SHOW
After returning from the designated leave weekend in Term 2 seven students, Miss O’Brien and Mr
Dixon loaded up six rams and six ewes to travel to Holbrook. After a scenic tour of Holbrook the
stock were unloaded and the team then travelled to Culcairn to stay at Mr Dixon’s. A hot dinner and
a warm house were gratefully welcomed.
Wednesday commenced with a series of workshops that covered a variety of topics including:
Animal Health; showing sheep; working sheep dogs; judging meat sheep, merinos and fleeces. The
afternoon was filled with an interschool interbreed competition. Our rams were awarded a 2nd and
3rd in the milk tooth less than 12 months of age category with the pair of rams winning their class.
The students also competed in the merino fleece competition. Following an aural presentation on
Thursday morning Lela Danton was awarded second place in the junior competition whilst Rohan
Lacey won the Senior division.
The Open Competition which pits schools against studs of the same breed commenced early on
Thursday morning. Both the rams and ewes had success with a Grand Champion Ram, Reserve
Champion Ram and a Reserve Champion Ewe being awarded. The Animal Management class and
Mrs Quinn’s hard work is definitely reaping dividends in the Show rink. We are sure that this
success will be continued at the Annual Ram Sale to be held next term. A late night occurred as the
novice Meat judging competition was held. Piper Williams was selected to speak on these animals
but was unsuccessful in placing this time.
YAHS students at Holbrook Show
On Friday morning the Novice Merino
sheep judging, State Group Qualifier in the
Merino and Meat Sheep judging occurred.
All students should be proud of how they
acquitted themselves with judges
commenting favourably on the manner in
which they all handled the sheep. Two of
our students were successful in gaining
third position in the two qualifying
competitions: Rohan Lacey – Merino and
Mitchell Whyte – Meat Sheep.
Yanco Agricultural High school placed
closely second to Hay Memorial High
school in the best maintained school team.
All seven students: Lela, Rohan, George,
Piper, Ryan, Mae and Mitchell represented their school with pride and dignity at all times. They
should be justifiably proud of their individual efforts and teamwork shown throughout the show.
NEW GRANDSTANDS
The school has purchased eight new
aluminium grandstands for use around the
school. This week the Year 11 VET Metals
class, with a small amount of assistance from
Year 12, have constructed the first two units.
The boys made a concerted effort and
completed assembly of the two in only two
hours. Well done.
The Stage 5 Engineering class will also
assemble some of these units while studying the construction techniques, extrusion, materials
science and strength through triangulation.
Phil Ronald /Teacher - Technology and Applied Studies

GRANDPARENTS DAY

Grandparents day to be held on September 3rd. This has been a very special day for Grandparents
and Year 7 students in the past and we look forward to another successful day this year.
BRAINSTORM PRODUCTIONS: Award-Winning In-School Theatre
Performances
THE FLIPSIDE
On the 3rd August Brainstorm Productions will be presenting their student wellbeing program ‘The
Flipside' for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 at Yanco Agricultural High School.
Powerful, current, and thoroughly contemporary, The Flipside is an unflinching live theatre
experience about our online behaviour and its potentially infinite ramifications. The Flipside depicts
two teen characters that are embedded in the online community including gaming, social
networking and content creation. The sheer magnitude of online interactions, selfies, videos, memes
and mash-ups uploaded every minute means that posts quickly disappear into the ether, but not
always. As these characters find out, online posts last forever and some can come back to haunt
you, even years later. The characters suddenly realise they can't just press the "undo" button to save
their relationships, reputation or their dignity. The Flipside will encourage students to think
carefully before they ‘post’, ‘snap’ or sign up.
The Flipside is part of our student wellbeing curriculum and the program has been developed in
consultation with teachers, psychologists, as well as real-life student experiences. The methodology
of the program is safe, supportive and nonjudgmental and designed to provide students with
positive and useful tools that they can use in their everyday lives.
More than 350,000 Australian students have already benefited from Brainstorm Productions multi
award-winning educational theatre programs over the past twelve months. Their programs cater to
the specific wellbeing needs of students, helping to create a healthy and harmonious school
environment. If you would like to know more about Brainstorm Productions, visit their website at
