Problem:AvacantsiteontheAlleghenyRiverindowntownPittsburghhasgreatpotentialtobringnewlifetothecity.Thesurroundingarealackspedestrian congregation spaces, nighttime activity, and a connection to the beautiful nearby waterfront. Urbannoisefromthebustlingstreetpreventspeoplefromstopping to relax. A new iconic piece of architecturefor a corporate figure can solve these issues. It muststand as unique among other downtown skyscrapers whilealsoachievingmoderndemandsofsustainability,asthoseoutlinedbytheLivingBuildingChallenge.
BehnischArchitektenproposedamasterplanforthesite,including a redeveloped pedestrian-friendly waterfront.Oneblockoutoffourisselectedforanewbuilding.
Response: Amazon.com is chosen as the corporate clientfor the building, the “Amazon Center.” The company ispickedforthestepsithastakentowardsreducingtheenvironmental impact of its operations - cutting downpackagingwaste,savingpowerandsavingshippingfuel.The site engages the busy street by peeling back the building corner and creating an open plaza. Pedestriansaredrawnintonavigatetowardtheriverfront.Visitorsaredrawninbythe“x-factor,”anopenpieceofprogramthatwasselectedtobeacabaretfortheAmazonCenter.BecausediningandtheateroftencomeseparateinPittsburgh,theyarecombinedintoonecabaretinorderto encourage prolonged nighttime activity in the area.The building features a waterfall on the facade whichdullsouturbannoiseandalsoactsinconjunctionwitharaisedfloorsystemforpassiveheating,cooling,andventilation.Thewaterfallispartofalivingmachinesystemwithinthebuildingthatsavesandrecycleswater.

Problem: MidtownManhattanisindireneedofimprovements.Thereisanoverabundanceofpedestrians,butalackofpedestrianbreakoutspaces,resultinginnumeroustrafficaccidents.Bikersexperiencesimilar issues, forced to dodge busy traffic as they ride. The estern entry to Grand Central is tunnel-like and narrow.Moreover,theMetLifebuildingissowidethatitactsasawall,blockingviewsdownthestreettowardGrandCentralStation.The historical jewel is lost in the center of the city.
Thebusinessdistrictalwayshasroomtogrow-vertically.TravelersneedamidtownhotelafteracommutethroughGrandCentralStation.MetLifeneedstofitintoitscontext.And,NewYorkCityhasathrivingartculture-butlittleofitspillsoverintoMidtown,wherepeoplearetooimmersedintothebusinessworld.
Response: Two towers are developed to “frame” Grand Central Station and create the impression that Met Life is a necessary part of a triad.ThetwoadditionstoMidtownstartastoweringpillarsandarecarvedawayinreferencetoMetLife’sfoldedfaces.Meanwhile,anewbikepathisinstalledthroughouttheGrandCentralarea,runningasanadditionalongtheStation’sexistingraised-uproad(theParkAvenueViaduct).
Withthemasterplaninplace,focusshiftstothedevelopmentoftheeastern-mostbuilding.The“tunnel”entryintoGrandCentralthatpreviouslyexistedonthesiteisreplacedwithasemi-private sunken plazathatpullspedestriansinandallowsanopportunitytorelaxoutsidebeforeenteringtheStation.Programmatically,thebuildingisfilledwithnewofficespaceandahotelforcommuters.Alsoincludedisanartschool,asanodtothesmallartacademythat existed within Grand Central Station in the 1920’s, and apresent-daypieceofcultureforhecticMidtown.Theinterioroftheskyscraperiscarvedby“bubble”atriumspaces,eatingawayatfloorspacethatisunusableduetopoorlightpenetrationintothedepthsofthebuilding.Thesespacesactasgalleriesreferencingthe core of the building, a bubble within which the art schoolresides.

Problem: LakesideSandandGravel,afamily-ownedminingcompany,isonanever-transitioningsite.Thelandscapechangesdailyasminerscarveawayattheearth.Overburden, or extra soil and gravel that has been piled off to the side, grows constantly. Asthelandonthepropertyismined,operationswilldiminish.Withinthenext40years,old machines that are put out of use will need to be stored and simultaneously celebratedfortheirminingsignificance.Amasterplanmustbesetintoplaceforthefutureofthecompanythatwillstillallowtheownerstoprofitoffoftheirland.
Response: Thevastpropertywillsplitoffintofournewuses:campgrounds, zip lining and adventure, a restaurant, and alandscape museum. The individual project focus is on thelandscapemuseumsite.Anyongoing mining operations move south; thenorthernsectionofthesiteisdevelopedforvisitoreducationandrecreation.Overburden is piled into landscaped hills forpicnicking and viewing the site from up high. Nearby miningbecomesaninteractiveoutdoordisplayaspartofthemuseum.Agravelbeachisdevelopedonthenearbylake.Themuseumitselfisstrategicallybuiltasalarge,tallstructurerightoveroldmachinerythatisdumpedinanalready-minedlocation.Theoldmachinerythusbecomesanhistoricaleducationaldisplay.Themuseum,likelayersofstratifiedrock,featuresasecondfloorforsmallerdisplaysandathirdfloorviewingdeck.

Themuseumtakesvisitorsthoughacityscapeofmachinery-userscirculatethroughhistoricalminingequipmentthatcomeintoviewoneaftertheother.Thelevelsarelikestratifiedrock;asvisitorsmovethroughthesecondandthirdlevelsofthemuseum,moreandmoreofthesiteisrevealed,culminatinginviewsofthedevelopedlandscape.

Problem: The U.S. Virgin Islands are best known as a touristlocation,butSaltRiverBayontheislandofSaintCroixistheideal spot for a new marine research center. The Caribbean ishometoavarietyoffloraandfaunathatinspiremodernresearchendeavors.ThenearbyBuckIslandReefonceservedasahabitatformarinelifebeforeitsdestructionbyHurricaneHugo.ThenewSt.CroixMarineResearchLaboratorynowholdstheresponsibilitytocontinuethelonghistoryofscientificdiscovery.
AsamodernlaboratoryinthestilldevelopingregionofSt.Croix,the building must take into consideration sustainable endeavors forgreenconstructionandtosavemoney.Thesiteispronetowindsthatcanbeharnessedforenergy,andtheCaribbeanofcoursereceivesheavysunthatcanbeadvantageous.Thenewlaboratorymust contain enough work space for 60 students and scientists,aswellasyoungvisitorsfromlocalschools.Housingforstaffandstudentsistobelocatedincloseproximitytothelab.Wetanddrylabroomsmustbeeffectivelyconfiguredtoallowforeasycommunicationbetweenresearchers.
Response:Thelaboratoryandnearbyhousingisplacedinanideal building zonethatisrelativelysafefromhurricanedamageandhigh waters. The building is organized in a scoop shape with protruding appendages that catch wind, allowingventilationtomovethroughoutdoorspacesandlabrooms.Labsareconfiguredrepetitively,withacentrallylocatedteachinglab and computer room. The building is constructed of locallyset precast concrete (dyed in the traditional bright colors ofCaribbeanarchitecture).WindowsarefittedwithPV-coatedlouverstotakeadvantageofsunlightandallowuserstocontrollightandventilation.Apartments for staff and students are located a short walk away and oriented in a staggered pattern to catch maximum ventilation.
Thelaboratoryencouragesrun-insbetweentheusersofthespacesusing a gridded configuration of offices (vertical in plan) andlaboratories(horizontalinplan).Muchlikeachemicalreaction,students,scientists,andvisitorsalikewillbeinvigoratedandtransformedbythelaboratory’sspaces.

Thebuildingskin,constructedofstructuralinsulated panels and PV-panel louvers,allows for both natural ventilation andpreservationofcooltemperatures.Sunlightis diffused by the louvers and harnessedforenergy.

Problem: Thetiny,artsytownofYellowSprings,Ohiohasbeenselected as the location for a new art academy. The woodednature reserve of Glen Helen is to house the academy in itsremote depths.Theschoolistoprovidearchitectureandartstudio spaces, as well as residences and support spaces forstudents.Thebuilding must be sympathetic to hikers and bikers that navigate the trails of Glen Helen, and must fit well into its remote surroundings. Yet, it mustalsostandoutasaniconofartandculture,easilyspottedbyvisitorsfromafar.
Response: Locatedalongastreamandstraddlingatrail,theacademyissurroundedbytrees,water,andevenpeople.Itsskinsystemisdesignedtoimitateandreflect(literally)thenaturalsurroundings by way of its sliced concrete, striated channelglass,andmirror-likecurtainwallskins.Althoughitfitsintoitscontext,thebuildingissimultaneouslyan “object” in the landscape-acubewithinaframe-thatstandsoutfromnature.
The entry to the building pulls in visitors comingdownthetrailthroughanarrowspacebeneaththecubeand into an expansive courtyard. The cube that contains thestudios becomes a jewel enveloped by the frame - it standsseparateandtransparent,allowingtheartiststobethefocusofthebuilding.Thesurroundingframehousestherestoftheprogram,fromresidencestogalleries-supportspacesfortheartists.

Problem: Cincinnati, Ohio is a little-known microcosm of aGermantown.AdestinationforGermanimmigrantsinthe1850’s,thecityishometoaplethoraofGermannewspapers,breweries,clubs,etc.ItisonlynaturalthataGermanconsulatewouldbewelcomehere.
Cincinnatiisplaguedbypoverty,rottinginfrastructure,poorplanning,andadecliningeducationsystem.Theareasurroundingthenewconsulaterepresentssuchproblems:buildingsaremostlyrun-down,empty parking lots proliferate,andgreenspaceisbarelyexistant.Germany,ontheotherhand,excelsatformingasustainablesociety.Thenewconsulatethusholdsalargerrole:toencourageamoreprosperouscommunityinCincinnati.
Response: Theprojectaimstocreatea“LittleGermany”withinCincinnati. Not only is the site transformed into a smallvillageofGermanpiecesandparts,butsurroundingfeaturesofCincinnatiarealsousedtothearchitecture’sadvantage.Forinstance,views of one of the town’s many hills, Mount Adams, areopenedtotheconsulateofficeandtheconsul’sapartment.Ontheoppositeendofthesite,consulate visitors can look over downtown CincinnatiandunderstandacitywithapotentialforurbangrowththatisachievedbyhealthyGermantowns.
TheGermanconsulatefeatureswithinitselfauniquesolutiontotheissueofCincinnati’sdecrepitparkinglots.The“parkinglot” is instead a row of the consulate officials’ high-classGermancars,facingintotheconsulatemuseumasifondisplay.Moreover,abeergardenissunkenintothesiteandvisiblefromthe street, welcoming passersby to a uniquely German diningexperience.

The2013PossibleMediumsconferencetookplaceattheKnowltonSchoolofArchitectureoveroneweekendandallowedarchitecturestudentstoexploremediabeyondtypicalarchitecturalconvention.
UndertheguidanceofworkshopleaderAngelaCo,tenstudentsparticipatedintheEndgame workshop.Theprojectbeganwithsketchesofanimalsilhouettesthatthenevolvedintothree-dimensionalformsbywayofcarvingfoamcubes.Thesefoamextrusionsweretheninterbredwiththesameanimalstoproduceahighlyregularform.Next,eachanimalwascrossbredwithanothertoproduceanirregularnewspecies.Thezooofanimalswasstackedinatotembasedonlongitudinalandtransverserelationships.Throughtheuseofsimpleformsthatresultedinacomplexstructure,theEndgameteamexploredtheprocess of vaulting and discovering surprises in modeling sections.
