the top models are suitable for begin-ners. Many people, however, will beintroduced to creative leisure by anorgan from our delightful range ofsmaller instruments. These are builtto the standards that have givenYamaha a world-wide name forunbeatable quality and reliability, andhave electronic components identicalto those developed for Yamaha'super-organs' costing manythousands of pounds. The exquisiteYamaha sound is a prominent featureand as well as great listening they aredesigned to be a joy to play -bringing out your innate musicaltalents naturally and entertainingly.

The sound capabilities of thedifferent models vary according toprice, but each is very definitely 'anorchestra at your fingertips'. Theygive a wide range of instrumentalsounds, and have the versatility tosuit men and women at any stage ofproficiency from absolute beginnersto players with a ful! understanding oftechnique, arrangement, andcomposition. Moreover, they aredesigned to help you to attain a

higher and higher standard so thatyou can begin to exploit the amazingcreative scope offered by Yamahatechnology. lf you're a beginner, you'll probably be playing along withyour organ's automaticaccompaniment section and pickingout your first tunes in well under anhour. After that, Yamaha takes over, and the built-in 'teacher features'combine with the pleasure of makingyour own music to give you guaranteedprogress in one of the world's mostrewarding leisure pursuits.

Versatility and Simplicity -The Voices and the Fun Blocks

Yamaha have concealed thesound potential of an entire orchestrabehind the handsome facade of vourinstrument. The modern Yamahaorgan featuring computer-age PASS(Pulse Analogue Synthesis System)electronics delivers a range of realisticinstrument sounds that would haveastounded the home organist of afew years ago - at a price thatwould have delighted him. Use the

different voices to provide excitingsolo passages for, say, flute orclarinet, or blend the voices to buildup the dramatic sound of anorchestra in full swing with strings, woodwind, brass, and percussionplaying together. Each tone lever isinfinitely variable so that you canregulate the prominence of the voiceyou want to introduce, and has threeclickstops within the range ofadjustment for positive, easily-remembered settings.

For remarkably authentic 'non-orchestral' voices such as guitar, piano, or the exciting vibraphone, use the Special Preset push-buttons.The manv tone levers can be blendedfor creating the sounds of lesscommon instrumehts - thebagpipes, for instance - or toconstruct unique sounds of yourown.

Yamaha have perfected voicingboth for solo and for massedinstruments, but equally important wehave perfected an easy-play backingsystem which takes the effort out oflearning the organ without inhibitingyour progress. The ABC Fun Blocksare designed to adapt the organ tothe proficiency of the player - plusgiving some effects that even theprofessionals can exploit. The SingleFinger Chord Fun Block gives you a

full Bass/Percussion/Chord back-up

- putting even the beginner incontrol of a polished rhythm trio.Using foot-pedals, you can get a

seventh. minor. or minor seventhvariation on the chord. The B-75N alsooffers the unique Multi-Bass Fun Blockwhichallows the bass actually toperform its own variations at presetintervals - just like a practised humanbassist! ldeal for the student, the FunBlocks are part of the joy of playingYamaha and are featured on evervoigan In Ine range.

As the player progresses, he maywish to expand his technique.Yamahahave provided an outstanding selectionof automatic features, which may beutilised as and when desired. Mostimportant of all, the player is able toadvance gradually through a "listenand learn" process, to a proficientperforming standard.

Tf he Yamaha family of home organsf is designed according to the'block-builder' principle, meaning thateach trme you move up the range, you find a model which has all thefeatures of the ones below it p/usextra ones - the only exceptions tothis rule being some of the moreclassically oriented'super consoles'.This system means Vou can be sureof Yamaha value-for-money - youwon't buy an expensive organ andfind it lacks certain features thatwould be available on a cheaper one.

The C-35N and the C-55N offer a

substantial increase in range over the'B' series organs. From the stridentbrass sounds and the swell of massedstrings, to exciting solo effects and

stimulating bass voices (the C-55Neven features Tuba bass), you canexplore around thirty specific voices. As well as fascinating 'in-between'effects - the sound of instrumentsthat have not yet been invented!

A distinguishing feature ofYamaha organs from the C-35N andthe C-55N upwards is the rich, rounded vibrato produced by arotating speaker. This gives aninteresting contrast with the moreincisive electronic vibrato effect.

For the beginner, using basicchords, Yamaha takes pains toensure that however the automaticsections are used they are 'foolproof'in the sense that they are always

in adding nerv 'gimmicks'. When afeature is introduced, it has beenthoroughly researched and is exactlyright.

The fascination of 'effects'The comprehensive effects

system of a Yamaha organ enablesyou to use the equally numerousvoices with imagination, subtlety, andfeeling. The organ at its best can bea remarkably warm, expressive

instrument, and to bring out thesequalities the amazing SymphonicChorus effect is provided, multiplyingthe voices and adding animation toyour music. In particular, it offers abreath-takingly atmospheric orchestralsound - a notable feature of all themore advanced Yamahas. TheSymphonic Chorus is produced usingsplit phasing, and the Discrete SoundSeparation facility also enables theChorus or Tremolo effect of therotary speaker channel to beseparated from the main channel. Youcan therefore have two distinctsections playing together or, forexample, superimpose a silvery fluteon a massive orchestral backing.

When using electronic vibrato itis possible to add to the effect byemploying 'Delay Vibrato', which letsthe note sound for a while before thevibrato is introduced. This is the mostusual way for a concert soloist to usevibrato.

For precise articulation of yoursound, Upper Attack or Upper SlowAttack enables the note either to beextra forceful (Attack) or gentle andlangorous (Slow Attack). Sustain onthe Upper Keyboard and Pedals isstandard, and the Glide facility'bends'the notes you play, producingastonishingly accurate imitations ofslide trombone or Haiwaiian Guitar.

On the accompaniment side, there is a full Fun Block section, andthe Auto-Rhythm features exciting'break' variations which are an excitingcomplement to your playing. Auto-Arpeggio, available on all Yamahasfrom the B-35N upwards, will not onlyproduce a beautiful rippling backingwhen you hold down a chord, but willfill out a simple tune on the lowerkeyboard with an intricate automaticharmony line - you'll sound as if youhad forty fingers!

Tfhe organ that has found greatestf popularity for home use isthe Spinet type with staggeredkevboards. With the YamahaD-Series, however, the Super Spinethas emerged. Built around thecompact Spinet organ concept, theD-65 and the D-85 have thesophistication and features of full-sizeconsole organs. Combined with thecareful design and the wealth ofeasy-play and automatic features thathave made Yamaha home organs themost popular in the world.

The D-65 and the D-85 arerelatively new from Yamaha, but theyhave already attracted considerablepraise for the ultra life-like quality oftheir sound. Whether you're aimingat a polished orchestral performance,a wild gypsy sound, a cool jazz-club number or even the punchy riffsof Rock 'N' Roll, you can capture theeffect you're after on a D-Seriesorgan. And the degree of personalcontrol over the voices invites andencourages you to develop a style allof Vour own.

Like all Yamahas, the D-65 andthe D-85 also play an active part indeveloping your technique andexpanding your musical ideas, offering a unique partnership betweeninstrument and player. Your organassists and guides you in improvingyour playing right up to virtuosostandard if you choose, but it is stillan entertainer that can be played byall the family. Indeed, in aninstrument with controls ascomprehensive as this, we considerease of playing is doubly important.Complex organs are simple - whenthey're Yamaha!

Auto-Rhythm DevelopmentsThere are a number of advanced

features that characterise theD-Series organs, but ProgrammableRhythm is amonQ the mostimportant.

All Yamaha home organs havesophisticated rhythm units, manywith refinements such as a facility forcombining different presets, orsettings for 'break' variations. Thepercussion sounds are varied and

exceptionally realistic, and the presetsprovide many players with all therhythm settings they require.

With the D-Series organs, however, the creative player canprogramme his own rhythms. Thebuilt-in rhythm SequenceProqrammer has a memory capacityof up to 128 bars - in effect you'compose' an entire percussion partin advance, ready to be played backas you perform the piece. This wayyou can achieve the complexpercussion effect of a symphonyorchestra, or build up rhythmvariations that are trulV Latin in theirintricacv and dynamism.

To increase the versatility of theProgrammer, it has been designed tointerface with the auromatic "FunBlock" accompaniments. lf it is usedin conjunction with these and/or theAuto-Arpeggio, you can produce a

complex'composed' backing trackwith just one finger on thekeyboard.

Fpor the lover of classic organf sounds the Yamaha E-45 and E-70present the power and drama of thisgreat instrument at its best. As full-scale console organs from the world'slargest and most successful organmakers, their quality and performanceis assured. They are designed tomeet the demands both of discerningperformers and serious students ofthe organ.

The fidelity of the solo andorchestral voices that is a Yamahahallmark appears to advantage inthese models since they are equippedwith a very high quality soundsystem, which is improved still furtherif a TMS or TX-3 tone cabinet is

used. To maintain standards, Yamahamanufacture everything that goesinto an organ including the amplifiersand speakers. The calibre ofsound delivered by the E-45 and theE-70 is partly explained by the factthat all the components are purpose-built for one another.

As well as sounding bdautiful,E-Series organs are very distinguishedin appearance. Like the D-Seriesmodels they have a luxury finish inAmerican Walnut, and Yamaha are atpains to preserve the tradition thatinstruments for the home areconstructed to the standards of thefinest furniture. The history of theorgan has been a long one with manyexamples of exquisite craftsmanship.lf the enthusiasts of the future areable to look back and pick out theE-45 and the E-70 as high points indesign and performance for consoleorgans of the 1980's, then we feelour attention to detail has beenjustif ied.

Some Advanced Facilities andEffects

The special features offered bythe Console organs, many of whichare shared by the more advanced ofthe Spinet models, confirm Yamahaas leader in the field. A boon for theenthusiast is Touch Vibrato whichallows you to produce vibratomanually by 'vibrating' your fingerfrom side to side on the key. This is a

technique that can greatly improve

the sensitivity of your style, Literaily

- the professional touch!

The voices are as comprehensiveas you would expect, but especiallynotable are three preset organsounds: powerful Jazz Organ, glorious Theatre Organ, and themighty Pipe Organ itself . Theseclassic sounds are part of a section ofsix preset pistons: the remainingthree are available for you to pre-programme the sounds of yourchoice: two for the upper keyboardalone and the third for the wholeorgan.

Other interesting'extras' includea popular 'Keyed Percussion' voice, which enables you to play BrushCymbal or Snare Brush on the LowerKeyboard. This augments an alreadyamazingly wide range of autopercussion effects.

I feveloped from the amazing GXuSynthesizerIOrgan as supplied toleading musicians and groups such asLed Zeppelin, Micky Most, StevieWonder and Keith Emerson the EXorgans represent the mostsophisticated and comprehensiveYamahas generally available. Theytake the revolutionary PASStechnology to its limits, and havemore-instrumental voices and moresound effects than any other organsmade today, with the sole exception

of the GXl . All the ideas that havemade Yamaha organs great arepresent here in their most refinedform. The highly authentic voices andthe sheer musical scope offered bvEX organs have made them the firstchoice for TV studios, theatres, andclubs, as well as for the homeorganist for whom nothinq but thebest will do.

In its repertoire of sounds the EXis supremely articulate and polished,

providing either warmth andmellowness that few would believepossible with an electronicallyproduced sound, or a vigorous attackat the other extreme. Particularly withthe specially designed TX-3 tonecabinet, it gives superb tonereproduction.

This is the kind of instrumentthat is chosen by leading professionalorgan players but at the same time itwill not be daunting to anyone nct

Page 11: Yamaha Organ Sales Brochure 1981

quite in that league The Fun Blocksthat make accompaniment 'as simpleas ABC' are still present on theflagships of the range, as are theautomatic rhythm devices. In fact, EXSeries console organs are theultimate interpretation of thetechnology featured by all othermodels - a magnificantembodimentof the Yamaha ideal.

PASS Technology

PASS Technology is Yamaha'sway of brinqinq music into thecomputer aqe. lt stands for 'PulseAnalogue Synthesis System' and is arevolutionary system of electronicsthat allows unprecedented precisionin the 'conditioning' of an electronicsignal. This precision gives the clarity,

accuracy, and authenticity that ischaracteristic of Yamaha sound.Combined with computer-designedLarge Scale Integrated Circuits foroptimum efficiency and performance,PASS is the heart of everv Yamahaorgan.

The PASS svstem wasintroduced to the Yamaha Electonerange of organs after it had beendevised to meet the stringentrequirements of the top flight modelswhich are used by leading performers

- who work with equally demandingproducers and recording engineers. But this uncompromising system hasnot been confined to professionalorgans. Just as the researchprogramme that put men on themoon resulted in 'spins-offs' in design

work from hearing aids to super-tankers, so PASS circuitrv was soonapplied to the whole series ofYamaha orqans from the basicmodels upwards. One of the greatestbreakthroughs of the system was thatit not only madq a perfect soundpossible - it made it accessible.

\lamaha-A Richer Life

Tfhe Yamaha organisationf encompasses a vast diversity of

sections linked by a single purpose -to enrich and expand leisure interestsworld-wide. To anyone who hasseen the Yamaha name on productsfrom tennis racquets to sailing boats, from concert grands to motorbikes, itis apparent that the organisation hasdone much to fulfil this purpose. What may not be so generally knownis that the Yamaha enterprise beganin 1887 with the international successof a single product - and thatproduct was an organ.

When Torakusu Yamahaestablished his companV's reputationwith the 19th-century reed organ thatbegan it all, he did so by imaginativedesign and careful craftsmanship. Tothese essentials the makers of today'sorgans can add nearly a century ofhard-earned experience and know-how, plus some of the mostadvanced technical facilities in theworld.

Organs have always been centralto Yamaha's range, but the organsection exploits the diversity of themodern company to the utmost. Theresult of this is that just abouteverything that goes into a Yamahaorgan is Yamaha made - backed byYamaha expertise and Yamahaquality control.

Yamaha are established makersof concert instruments, so musicalstandards are of the highest. Yamahahave made a name for quality Hi-Fi,so sound is spot-on. Yamaha pioneerin plastics, metallurgy, and precisionwood-working - and the organsreflect the fact. With every stage ofmanufacture controlled by the oneorganisation, quality control isrigorous and total. Yamaha work hardand thoroughly for the reputation asbuilders of the most reliable andsophisticated organs irr the world, and everyone in the company isproud of it.

All assembly and testing ofYamaha organs takes place inpurpose-built factories in Japan, where there are also extensiveResearch and Development facilities.

These factories are the centre of a

world-wide distribution network withsubsidiaries and associatedcompanies in a large number ofcountries. In the UK organdistribution is handled solely byKemble (Organ Sales) Ltd, a divisionof Kemble pianos. When Kembletook on the distribution of Yamahaorgans in 1969 they were no new-comers to the music industrvthemselves - a Kemble piano is stilla prized instrument in many homes.Founded in 1918, Kemble had a lot incommon with Yamaha when the twojoined forces - both were musicalinstrument manufacturers of integrityand standing, and both were used tosetting the standards in their fieldrather than following them.

Kemble are the second largestpiano producers in Europe, andtogether the two companies run anoperation that matches the calibreand scale of the products they jointlymarket. Special attention is paid tothe back-up for the organs, not onlyin terms of service but in the sensethat the musical education systemthat Yamaha pioneered the worldover is widely available in the UK.Yamaha are in every sense involvedin leisure. From massive promotionssuch as international festivals to thepersonal touch which, throughspecially selected Yamaha Gold StarDealers, is available to every Yamahaorgan buyer. That's why the name ofYamaha is becoming synonymouswith spare-time creativitv.
