DOUBLE DOUBLE TOIL AND TROUBLE

Teacher Pack

Aim: To introduce Shakespeare in a fun, non-threatening way and to encourage the enjoyment of looking deeper into meaning and context.

The students are initially taken into the world of Harry Potter where the song Double Double Toil and Trouble is featured and then asked to examine in some detail the rhythm and meaning of the song. The song becomes separated from the context of Harry Potter. Depending on the nature of your group you can decide whether to introduce the context of Macbeth and then finally Shakespeare.

Activity 1 (power point: slide 1)

Harry Potter clip

Watch the clip from Harry Potter movie where various scenes from Harry Potter are featured and the song Double Double Toil and Trouble is sung and the words given.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2xfpoQx6oI

Short brainstormFind out what the students know and highlight wizardry, witchcraft and spells and potions.Ask questions such as: Where is this clip from?...Which film? What happens at Hogwarts - what are the pupils learning about?Expected response: Wizardry and witchcraft.- spells and potions.

Watch the clip again, this time asking the students to concentrate on the words at the bottom of the screen. While they do this, hand out their worksheets.

Activity 2 (power point slides: 2-7 and student pack: page 2)

Read through the song. Relatively quickly, explain meaning with the help of visuals aids on the power point. The same pictures are also provided on the work sheets. While the students work through the song ask them to draw lines from the pictures on their work sheets to the text they belong to. Point out that these are the ingredients going in the pot!

Activity 3 (power point slides: 8-9)Point out the rhythm of the song. Easy to write music to. Also possible to put in a rap. Use rap example from Youtube to illustrate this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CDYxLUls3g&list=RDWWXWHgUVWks

Activity 4 (power point slide: 10 and student pack: page 3)On the 3rd page of the work sheets Double Double Toil and Trouble is presented again but this time with gaps so that the students can put in their own ingredients.

Working in duos or individually the students can make their own potions. They can think about using:- bits of people / animals / plants - perhaps from interesting places.- write and draw if they like- rhyme and rhythm (but not a priority)- singing / speaking/ rapping - however they would like to present their potion Option – to have each duo present their potion to the whole class

This can be the end of the activity. Now there is an option to look further into where the “song” comes from. i.e. Shakespeare’s Macbeth.
