Coaches and Athletes Prepare to Rock the Floor at Nationals!

Coaches and teams are preparing hard towards winning a trophy and the title at the American Cheer and Dance Showdown competition February 2012. We are truly excited about the competition season and we want to make sure all athlets and parents are on board this season. Their will be commitment forms to fill out for everyone invited to participate this season. The coaches and directors spend coutless hours preparing the choreography, stunts, tumbling and creativity with your student in mind. If we don’t have the commitment it leaves gaps in the routines and makes its hard for the girls to practice. Unless it is an emergency or your athlete is sick and not feeling well. Everyone needs to be at practices. Everyones commitment determines how well we will do at nationals.

How to help your athlete balance school and cheerleading

August 19th, 2011 by Staff –

How your GPA can impact your cheer career

By Stephanie Le –Cheerleading Magazine. The life of a student-athlete is no walk in the park. Between practices, games, pep rallies, competitions and other team commitments, it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of all things cheer. Cheerleaders strive for excellence—a skill that should be shown on and off the mat. Just as you work hard to excel in your stunting and tumbling skills, it’s equally important that your responsibilities as a student don’t take a back seat. Here’s why making the grade is important not only for your academic future but for your cheer career, too!

Setting “A” good example

As a cheerleader, all eyes are on you all the time! And those eyes include teachers, coaches, parents and other students. It’s important to remember that cheerleading isn’t only about performing great routines and winning competitions—it’s about supporting your school, showing leadership and being a good role model. Your job is to set a good example to those around you in everything you do. ―Cheerleaders are the only athletes with leader in their name,‖ says Carolyn Shoemaker, who coaches the varsity cheerleading team at Sebring HS, in Sebring, FL. The program there focuses greatly on its athletes achieving and maintaining academic excellence. ―Our athletes are expected by our athletic director, coaches and principal to be leaders both academically and socially in our school and community.‖

Others are looking to you to set a good example and it’s important to remember that not only do your grades reflect on you and your work ethic, they reflect on your teammates as well. Cheerleaders have gotten an undeserved rep for being ―airheads‖ or being ―ditzy.‖ It’s your responsibility to yourself and your teams to debunk these myths by showing that not only are you great athletes, you’re great students and members in your community, too. You work hard in practice so that you’ll get good marks in competition; you should bring that same spirit to your scores in the classroom.

―Without good grades, student athletes tend to lose focus,‖ says Coach Shoemaker. ―Each cheerleader is accountable to themselves, their teammates, coaches and school. If all athletes are responsible and accountable then all goals are attainable.‖

Getting “B”enched

Most schools have very strict academic policies when it comes to their student athletes. You must have a certain GPA in order to try out for a team sport and you’re expected to maintain that grade in order to remain on the team.Cheerleading’s a sport where every member is a crucial part of the squad. Lagging on your grades can get you benched and ultimately hurt your team, too—especially if you have a big game or competition coming up and the team is left reworking their routines without you in them. ―We had a cheerleader get benched for a whole grading period,‖ says Courtney Svoboda of the Palm Beach Lightning All-stars. ―It messed up a routine, so we didn’t compete in a few competitions. There was always a stunt group that had to sit out at games or pep rallies.‖

Coach Shoemaker stresses the importance of academics to her team to keep them on track. ―I print out my students’ progress reports every three weeks to check on where they are grade-wise,‖ she says. ―I’m always on them about keeping up in the classroom. Teachers can even contact me if grades or attendance become a problem.‖Also, don’t be afraid to ask your coaches, teammates or teachers for help. As long as you’re making your schoolwork a priority, the people in your life will be happy to help you out with prioritizing and time-management.

“C”ollege Dreams

College cheerleading is a lot more competitive and time-consuming than cheering on a high school level. If your dream is to cheer at a Division I college, other than cheer ability, you’ll need to have the grades and scores to get accepted in the first place. Most schools won’t let you join a sport without a minimum GPA, and once you get in to the college of your choice, maintaining good grades is critical. Learning the balance between school and cheer early on will help you excel in college in both cheerleading and academia.

Now more than ever, colleges have become more difficult to get in to. If you dream of cheering in college, you’ll not only need the grades to get accepted at your dream school, you’ll also need the time-management and study skills to stay at that school and on the cheer team.

Learning to balance all of your commitments with your schoolwork is a must and academics have to come first—even before cheering. ―As a die-hard cheerleader, I used to put cheerleading first,‖ says Svoboda, who now attends Palm Beach State College. ―When I first started college I found that if I want to be someone one day and make a living, school needs to come first.‖

Luckily, today a lot of colleges take steps to help their student athletes do it all. Take advantage of available study groups and tutoring sessions. The reality is that falling behind on work and classes in college will not only result in you being ineligible to participate in cheerleading, it can result from you losing a scholarship and even getting kicked out of school. Even though cheerleading can be a major player in your life, you must always remember that the key to a great future is a great education.

This year for our outreach project, Yadah Cheer and Dance will be teaming up with the Moran family to support

Operation Samaritans Purse .Their mission is “To demonstrate God's love in a tangible way to needy children around

the world, and together with the local church worldwide, to share the Good News of Jesus Christ.” It’s important

that we show our athletes how to give back to the community and the world in a tangible way, As the Lord blesses us

we defenitely want to be a blessing to others. We have an awesome opportunity to participate in this outreach

operation that allows us to give to children and families in third world countries, who live in areas of poverty.

How does it work?

1. Pack a shoe box- We also would like to allow the girls to decorate the boxes in Christmas paper & provide a

christmas card. In the box (for either a boy or girl). You may pack toys, school supplies, stuffed animals (no

food, liquids, or perishable items)

2. Download a label- The shipping cost per box is $7.00. The label will also let the girls track their package

online to the country of its destination.

3. The Morans along with those on the Samaritans Purse committee will drop off the boxes of wonderful gifts to

the designated shipping facility for Samaritas Purse.

4. Pray for the child who will be blessed by the box and follow the journey your package. It’s just that easy. We

need to have all the boxes no later than October 27th,2011

1. Parents please make sure you are signing your students out at the front table.

This is for their protection and ours. They will not be allowed to leave the room

until you sign them out. They can sign themselves in but it’s your responsibility to

come inside and get them. It’s too dark to let them go and please be mindful we

are in a public facility.

2. Tuition is due on the 1st Please make sure your tuition is paid on time to prevent $5.00

late fee. We understand things happen and circumstances occur. Please let Angelette

know should you have unforeseen circumstances and need additional time. We have an

open door policy but if you don’t notify us we have to assume otherwise. If you have

more than one student please make sure you let the front desk know you need multiple

sibling discount rate. Students will not be allowed to practice if tuition is not paid. 3. Make sure your athlete is wearing either athletic shoes or cheer shoes. Does not

matter the brand should your student not have their cheer shoes yet. Sneaker

and street shoes are not allowed. We practice on hardwood floors an it’s difficult

for your student to practice without having shoes to support their feet. Also

cotton shirt and shorts, No blue jean or denim fabric. 4. As the coaches are preparing for competition season it’s important that your students

are at practices. Demerits will begin to be issued for excessive absences.

5. No gum or food allowed. Water bottles may be brought in but it must have a spill proof

top or a pop top, no soda.

6. Hair needs to be pulled back in a ponytail out of their face or if their hair is short maybe

a head band. It makes it difficult to tumble and work on stunts when their hair is in

their face.

7. Parents please make your athletes mindful on how they are to behave during practice;

we have had some behavior issues that will earn demerits for misbehaving and being

disrespectful to coaches and other athletes.
