1. What is vital to your theme choice/ statement is that it is personal to you in some way. Think about which one of these points makes it personal to you:

• Personal interest due to …Family history, enjoyment, previous study, past-times, artists of interest, movements of interest, time of interest in history, interest in particular techniques, devices, processes, subject….

2. Think about how it will inform your practical work? Make comment on this. What do you hope to get out of it? What questions might you have that will inform your practical work?

1. Ensure you have researched your chosen theme thoroughly from a range of sources e.g. journals websites (from a range of sources and times) , books … If your not sure where to start look at Wikipedia first and go from there.

2. The ability to select research is an important one- select research and then order & prioritise. Some of you might find there is too much research out there and you need to be more selective.

• Select research by the following: relevance to concept/ time/ other related contexts/ devices/ techniques/ media/ subject…..

• Prioritize in order of importance to: you/ your theme/ the artist, photographer/ art critics/ movement/ time/ place…..

• Annotate – a) in relation to the points above which are important to your theme

3. Highlight relevant quotes you might like to use later- but always annotate with a reason/ or your response to the quote otherwise you will forget your reason for using it

This will vary depending on chosen concept. The following is a guide to what could be included Use this as a checklist to work through:

a) Decide which of the below points are most important to your theme (you may need to research further to find this out)

b) Prioritize in order of importance to your theme and to you and any questions you may have

c) Now start doing further research in order for you to write more detail . Use the key skill of researching, reading, highlighting, reducing to key points, prioritizing and comparing.

*The background history to a particular art movement/s which relate closely to your chosen concept.

*Background on particular photographers / artists / art works which explore the chosen concept and may be well known in their field. This should be supported by relevant imagery and should be mostly descriptive and factual information at this point.

*Background on related research in other contexts in relation to the concept in reference to other areas of study e.g. science/ maths and the Fibonacci series in relation to concept ‘organic’, literature, film, music, religion, culture. This will need to be qualified with an explanation of why it is relevant and how other artists may have used these notions in own work. For you to do this you will need to have done some research surrounding your concept to know if there is any. A good starting place for this is Wikipedia.

*Background to a particular period/ era in history or the modern day

* Background to particular places/ geographical contexts off importance

1. After your initial research is there anything which is left as a burning question/ unanswered?2. If your not sure think about which of the following you want to explore further :• Movements• Artist/ photographers• Art works/ photographs• Time/ era• Context/ place/ social/ religious/ cultural3. Now devise some possible questions using these …Question starters:How, why, where, which, who, what…..4.
