December is Disease Prevention and Treatment Month

Medical Science has proven time and again when the

resources are provided, great progress in the treatment, cure,

and prevention of disease can occur. – Michael J. Fox

People died of starvation, lack of knowledge on cleanliness,

hygiene and healthcare on the old days. In most part of the

world, now, there is food, proper washing and hygiene, health-

care facilities with improved technology and healthcare

persons to diagnose and treat most illness to affect the quality

of life. Yet life threatening diseases such high blood pressure,

diabetes, cancer, coronary ailments, etc. especially in the well

of societies impact our desire to live long and better. Similarly,

diseases like dengue, malaria, cholera, ebola, etc. threaten the

lives of many in the neighbouring developing societies.

The role of Rotary is becoming increasingly important in the

prevention and treatment of diseases for creating healthy

communities. The month of December has been dedicated to

the cause of ‘Disease Prevention and Treatment’ to make the

Rotarians aware and undertake action oriented program in this

important area of ‘service to the society’ to keep our commu-

nities healthy in mind and body.

Rotary’s PolioPlus program is the world’s largest health related

program undertaken through private-public cooperation.

Initiated by Rotary International involving other international

and national organisations like WHO, CDC, national

governments and large number of volunteers, the fraternity of

over 1 million Rotarians has contributed significantly through

the Rotary Foundation to make the iconic program a success

by eradicating polio from the face of the world.

The Rotary Club of Dhaka, since founding, has been active in

undertaking projects and programs such as distribution of

healthy food and clean water kits during floods and cyclones,

blankets during winter help prevent diseases during and after

natural disasters. Club’s yearly Sleeping Kits Distribution (SKD)

program, jointly with SCAW of Canada, provide healthy living

conditions for the poor children. Other programs like eye and

dental camps for the poor and school children, cancer aware-

ness programs, distribution of wheel chairs and artificial limbs,

health kits for women created positive impact in the communi-

ties for ‘Disease Prevention and Treatment’ in keeping with the

Rotary theme of 2015-16 “Be a Gift to the World”.
