Daniel McCaffrey has had a long and successful learning relationship with Belfast Met. He started over 10 years ago doing a BTEC Level 1 in Sport and progressed and worked his way up to complete the HND in Sport. Following this he studied at university in Preston where he gained his degree.

He was always interested in sport and personal training and upon return after completing his degree he enrolled in the Level 3 Active IQ personal training course. Having heard great things about the course he knew this would give him an industry recognised qualification that would enable him to develop his business idea.

(KTP) is one of the UK’s leading business support programmes, helping firms improve their competitiveness and productivity through the better use of knowledge, technology and skills. KTP is a three-way partnership between a business, an academic and a recently qualified graduate known as an Associate, delivering a project.

Our team can help and support you in defining and agreeing a project that will draw on Belfast Met’s expertise and apply it to your business. The agreed project can be for between one and three years, with the overall aim of helping your business innovate in an area that you have identified as a high priority.

A high calibre graduate is recruited as a KTP Associate to implement your strategic initiative whilst our academics mentoring the Associate, contributing their knowledge and experience to the project. The Associate is based within the business and is part of the team. They will develop and implement the project and will meet with their academic/research supervisor on a regular basis to progress the project.

The objective of a KTP is to facilitate the transfer of knowledge and the spread of technical and business skills through innovative projects.

The funding organisations contribute up to 60% of the cost of the project. Funding for KTP programmes supports employment costs, mentoring, professional development, travel and equipment.

FUSION, InterTradeIreland’s all-island technology transfer programme, can help you to bolster your business’s bottom line and get ahead of the competition by partnering your company with a third-level institution with the specialist expertise you need and a high calibre science, engineering or technology graduate.

On average, each company taking part on the FUSION programme benefits from over £1 million worth of sales or efficiency savings in the three years following the project.

The apprenticeship system is currently going through its biggest change in decades. With the government’s apprenticeship levy due to kick in next April, there’s never been a better time to make apprenticeships a key element of your talent strategy.

Belfast Met is the largest and longest established further and higher education college in Northern Ireland offering a broad range of provision that is innovative, high quality and economically relevant.

With a vision to be a world-class college that nurtures the talent and ambition of the city of Belfast and beyond, and through dedication, innovation and creativity, Belfast Met is determined to provide the range of skills necessary to support employers in competing locally, nationally and internationally.

As part of this new approach we have established a new Training, Apprenticeships and Employer Engagement Department which focuses on further enhancing the College’s offering to support employers on “Leading the City to Work”.

Apprenticeships are a proven solution to tackling staff turnover, with 80% of companies who invest in apprentices reporting an increase in staff retention. So whether you’re already a supporter of apprenticeships or are dipping a toe for the first time, the department’s aim is to provide Northern Ireland employers with the opportunity to create new apprenticeship roles or to upskill their current workforce.

The new team brings a wealth of industry experience in providing high quality learning solutions for employers and learners which will without doubt enhance the future success of the department.

Aidan Sloane Head of Department for Training, Apprenticeships and Employment said: “I am delighted to have taken on strategic responsibility for this newly formed department. The formation of this team will play a pivotal role in helping employers meet the skills demands of their workforce. The College’s vision to nurture the talent of the city of Belfast and beyond can only be successful through the development of strategic partnerships between employers and education providers. Employer engagement is at the centre of everything we do and our aim is to provide first class workforce solutions through training and apprenticeships.”

Belfast Metropolitan College currently offer a range of part-time courses in IT Vendor Certifications from Microsoft, CompTIA and Cisco in a broad range of IT subjects from infrastructure to software development. These qualifications are ideal for those either trying to gain employment in the IT industry or for those already in the industry to improve and validate their skills and gain professional accreditation.

Our Microsoft Technology Associate (MTA) qualifications are an introductory Microsoft certification for individuals considering a career in technology. MTA certification addresses a wide spectrum of fundamental technical concepts, assesses and validates your core technical knowledge, and enhances your technical credibility.

We also offer programming in HTML5 which is for intermediate to advanced learners and provides an accelerated introduction to HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript and helps students learn basic programming skills. It also focuses on using HTML5/CSS3/JavaScript to implement programming logic, define and use variables, perform looping and branching, develop user interfaces, capture and validate user input, store data, and create well-structured applications.

The CompTIA Network+ certification is the sign of a qualified networking professional. Companies such as Dell, HP, Ricoh, Sharp and Xerox recommend or require CompTIA Network+ for their networking technicians.

IT Vendor Certifications are highly sought after in the IT sector and validate the certification holder’s skills in an aspect of IT from Client & Server Operating System Management, IT Hardware Maintenance, Networking or Software Development.

For further information on these courses are other courses offered by the Department of Creative and Digital Industries go to page 24 and 25.

The team will drive new strategic collaborative partnerships at a national, regional and local level across the private and public sectors which will create new opportunities for employers and their workforce.

With new policy development, this new tailored approach from Belfast Met will see employer engagement placed in a very strong strategic position in line with our Corporate Plan 2016/20.

We’ve seen an increased demand from employers for Apprenticeship and Higher Level Apprenticeship provision and as a result, the College has witnessed growth in demand across our provision in recent months.

Our strategy going forward is to continue to develop and expand our market offering across key industry sectors in line with the Economic and Skills strategies for Northern Ireland.

With funding for training costs provided by the Department for the Economy, apprenticeships are available from Level 2 to 5 in a range of curriculum areas from Engineering, Construction, IT, Hospitality, Finance to Digital Marketing, Accountancy and Business Services.

• Are you a foreign national living in Northern Ireland?

• Do you need to improve your English Language skills for work or simply to make friends whilst living here?

• Would you like to complete an accredited recognised English Language qualification that would improve your written and spoken English?

Then you have come to the right place. Belfast Met offers a wide range of courses in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) which focus on general, academic and professional English. Our ESOL courses are particularly suitable if you are taking up residency in Northern Ireland as you will develop your skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. ESOL is offered at five levels – Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2.

You will take the City & Guilds Skills for Life exams at the end of the course. These courses are available part-time (5 hours per week) or on an intensive basis (14 hours per week). The Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications are recognised by UK employers and some educational establishments.

We also offer internationally recognised qualification classes which may help you to gain employment or undertake further studies, either here or abroad.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes are offered at three levels- Entry Level (B1*), Level 1 (B2*) and Level 2 (C1*). These courses are available on an intensive basis (15 hours per week).

These include:• Cambridge English Entry Level Certificate in

ESOL International (Preliminary). • Cambridge English Level 1 Certificate in

ESOL International (First).• Cambridge English Level 2 Certificate in

ESOL International (Advanced). • The College also offers IELTS

preparation courses.

*Level equivalents on the Common European Framework Reference for Languages (CEFR)Please note that you must be assessed before commencing an ESOL class. See adjacent instructions for assessment and enrolment.

For further information, tel: 028 9026 5040 / 028 9026 5096.

If you are interested in teaching ESOL, you should consider the course below:

• Cambridge ESOL Level 5 Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA).

• The CELTA course will lead to a qualification which allows you to teach English at home or abroad to speakers of other languages. Please email: [email protected] for further information and/or request an application form.

Assessment and EnrolmentAll new students must take an English test (assessment). This helps us choose a class at the right level for you. You have 2 options: Online assessment or Paper based assessment.

Assessment takes place at the College’s Titanic Quarter Campus. You must book a place online. You must arrive at the beginning of the session, as if you are late, it may not be possible for us to assess you. You also need to bring Photo ID (e.g. valid passport or national identity card) to the assessment session. Please note that if you enrol on an ESOL /EFL course:

• You are expected to attend all the lessons.• If you do not attend classes you may not be

allowed to complete your course.• If you cannot attend one lesson you must

inform your teacher in advance. • You are expected to sit the examination at

the end of the course.• If you wish to do the online assessment,

please follow the instructions below:• Request a token to do the Online

Assessment from [email protected]

• For example: “My name is…and I would like to request a token to do the online placement test”.

• We will reply and give you instructions about how to do the online test.

• The online test assesses your reading and listening. When you have your result, you must also come to the College to have your speaking and writing tested. Information on how to book an appointment for the speaking & writing assessment will be in the email.

If you prefer not to do the online assessment, you can do the assessment at the College. You must book a place via the following link: www.esol-assessment.eventbrite.co.uk ma
