Yanelia Ramírez has lost count of how many important family

moments she’s missed.

Her work schedule has made it difficult not to.

A nail salon worker during the past 14 years and a mother of five children, Ramírez said she has worked six days a week for at least 10 of those years without paid time off.

“It pains me to think about all of the birthdays, first days of school, graduations and other special days I’ve missed because I couldn’t afford to miss a paycheck or risk losing my job,” remarked Ramirez, who was at City Hall on Monday to join rally in favor of a bill that would mandate paid personal time to all New York City workers.

Ramírez said the proposed law would provide low-income laborers with more dignity.

“We don’t deserve to be treated like batteries to be used and then thrown away once drained,” she remarked.

The rally drew employees, First Lady Chirlane McCray, Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and City Councilmembers, who

threw their support behind the City Council bill. They said it would help about one million New Yorkers, including domestic workers, retail workers, and food service employees.

Williams, who introduced the bill in 2014 while a member of the City Council, noted that 62 percent of low-income workers have no paid personal time off, compared with 92

percent of high-wage workers.Motioning to the workers gathered on

the City Hall steps, Williams said, “All of the people behind me are not begging for something that they simply want. They are demanding something that they absolutely need to live lives as human beings.”

“They miss birthdays, weddings, and even funerals,” added McCray. “Sick days run out fast, leaving them without any options. They can’t stay home to let the plumber in, or care properly for a sick child. Can you imagine the stress that grows and grows when there is no time to take care of personal responsibilities?”

Karen LeRoy, who works two part-time jobs at a grocery store and nursing home, said workers without paid time off are forced to make tough choices.

“If we do take time off, we might give up a significant portion of our pay,” she said. “And many times, I needed a day off but was afraid to ask because I think I’ll get fired.”

According to city officials, 75 percent of part-time workers do not get paid vacation or personal time.

The legislation requires employers to offer workers 10 days per year paid personal time, which can be used for any reason, including religious observances, doctor appointments and bereavement.

Oh man, do I have a restaurant for you. In our never-ending quest to bring you all the best that Uptown has to offer, I have come across a culinary gem in El Barrio. Santiago’s Beer Garden (2337 First Avenue) is that place, ladies and gentlemen. I went there this past Sunday on a much-needed date night with the wife and we will be returning ASAP with the entire family. The place has this amazing décor and vibe that is super cool and chic but still welcoming. What makes this place so awesome is that it boasts both indoor and outdoor spaces. And the food is quite simply outstanding. Santiago’s Beer Garden is not playing when it comes to authentic Dominican food that is impeccably prepared and presented. On our first outing there, I had the churrasco and the wife had a shrimp mofongo. Both were outstanding and know that the kitchen does not skimp on the portions. And since they are also a beer garden, the craft beer selection is super on point. They also make some stellar cocktails. In honor of the anniversary of September 11, Inside Edition put together a wonderful segment on Bruce Reynolds and the garden in Inwood that bears his name. Bruce’s Garden is a living, breathing memorial to a man that meant so much to so many. Mr. Reynolds died in the line of duty on 9/11. Bruce’s father is interviewed

It is still a world of hurt.

The World Trade Center (WTC) Environmental Health Center of NYC Health + Hospitals is reporting a dramatic increase in patients.

As of July 2019, the center is serving 10,944 patients, NYC Health + Hospitals announced this past week. This marks an increase of more than 1,200 patients from July 2018.

The WTC Environmental Health Center assesses and treats 9/11-related physical and mental health conditions, providing services at no cost to residents, students, workers, or passersby eligible for care under the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act.

“It has been 18 years since the terror attacks, and New Yorkers continue to feel the effects of that horrific day,” said Mitchell Katz, MD, President and CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals. “Our hope is that those whose health was affected by 9/11 seek the care they deserve through the WTC Environmental

Health Center and continue to monitor their health.”

In the last year, the WTC Environmental Health Center expanded capacity by hiring 16 additional providers at the clinics to perform patient visits, giving patients the option to make appointments through the call center, and modernizing the electronic health records system at the three sites.

New providers include physicians, pharmacists, social workers, mental health providers, nurses, and nurse practitioners.

“The increase in patients treated by the Center demonstrates the continued need to care for persistent aerodigestive disorders, PTSD, as

well as cancers in those who were exposed to the toxic dust and fumes. Enrollment remains open and we encourage New Yorkers to get the care they need,” said Joan Reibman, MD, NYC Health + Hospitals WTC Environmental Health Center Medical Director.

Among the most common conditions treated through the WTC Environmental Health Center are: cancer, upper respiratory disease, obstructive airway disease, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

“While for many 9/11 seems like the

distant past, thousands of New Yorkers carry the attacks with them every day. 11,000 people enrolled in the WTC Environmental Health Center underscores just how important these programs are and how much they are needed, said Congresswoman Carolyn B. Maloney. “I hope everyone whose health was impacted on September 11th, and in the months afterwards, will make use of the resources they need and deserve.”

New Yorkers qualify for 9/11 health services if they:

• lived, worked, or went to school or day care in the area of Manhattan

that is south of Houston Street or in northwest areas of Brooklyn, between September 11, 2001, and July 31, 2002

• were exposed to the dust cloud on 9/11, or to dust or smoke in the disaster area after 9/11

• worked as a cleanup worker or performed maintenance work in the disaster area between September 11, 2001, and January 10, 2002

Hurricane Dorian was the strongest hurricane in

Bahamas history.

It made landfall over the northwest Bahamas on September 1, and it flooded neighborhoods, destroyed homes and killed at least 30 people, with hundreds if not thousands missing.

The death toll is expected to rise significantly in the coming days.

The Bahamas Consulate General New York (known as The Bahamas House) is accepting emergency relief supplies. Impacted residents are in need of medical supplies, water, canned goods, clothes, diapers, sanitary items, batteries, flashlights and other non-perishable items. Monetary donations are being made via wire to RBC Royal Bank.

Ava’s ready to ace it.

Ava Wallace, who is beginning second grade, said she was “excited” for the new school year.

She and other children across New York City made their return to school this past week.

Her academic year will commence in a Catholic school founded in 1912.

Our Lady of Lourdes School, based in Hamilton Heights, has more than 300 students from Pre-K to eighth grade – and it is focused on expanding its enrichment programming for students.

To attract more families and improve its offerings for students, the school is upgrading its after-school program and building partnerships with outside organizations, staff members said.

“Now is a time to build relationships,” said Vanessa DeCarbo, the school’s newly hired Director of Advancement.

Our Lady of Lourdes School recently forged a partnership with the Lang Lang

Foundation, an international non-profit that bolsters music programs for students. The foundation will soon provide the school with 30 electronic keyboards.

The school is also developing a STEAM (the acronym stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) program, and searching for organizations that will make donations or sponsor activities within the school.

“We are a small school — we need to find the community relationships,” DeCarbo said. “It’s all about giving students a well-

rounded experience.”Principal Suzanne Kaszynski said she

considers the elementary and middle school grades to be essential in a student’s life.

“These are important years because it prepares them for high school and college,” she said. “We want to open doors for them.”

As part of its standard curriculum, the school features a dance program taught by a professional Alvin Ailey dancer and percussionist, who will introduce students to West African, creative movement and modern dance.

Also, teaching artists from the New York Philharmonic conduct work with students.

“Children learn to compose their own piece of music and get to visit the Philharmonic at the end of the school year,” Kaszynski said.

While beneficial to students, Kaszynski acknowledged that enhanced programming is required to attract more students at a time when enrollment in Catholic schools is dwindling. The tuition-based Our Lady of Lourdes is competing with free public and

A new restaurant has opened up on the former site of waterfront hotspot La Marina – and there’ll be no happy hour or hookah for the time being.

Dubbed The Hudson, the new Dyckman Street venue is operated by Jimmy Goldman, owner of the Brother Jimmy’s BBQ restaurant chain.

On August 5, a bankruptcy judge approved the transfer of the site’s ownership to Goldman. Manhattan River Group, the previous owners, ended up in bankruptcy court while owing debtors — many of whom had given deposits for future weddings and private events — in excess of $600,000, according to court documents.

The owners of La Marina ran into trouble soon after it opened in 2012.

The party hub generated buzz by drawing A-list visitors such as Jay-Z, Beyoncé and Leonardo DiCaprio, but also ran afoul of many local residents by hosting loud outdoor concerts and using public parking spaces with its valet parking service.

La Marina was temporarily closed in July 2018 after a series of Health Department and State Liquor Authority violations, and the

venue was shuttered for good last December after an employee was arrested for narcotics trafficking and violation of state liquor laws.

As a city-owned concession, Manhattan River Group paid NYC Parks for the rights to operate on the land. Now, those rights have been transferred to Goldman and his colleagues.

“We are pleased the matter has been resolved, and look forward to the future operation of the concession, and the marina,” said NYC Parks spokesperson Crystal Howard in a statement.

Jon Becker, Goldman’s business partner, said that The Hudson is looking to put the site’s past behind them and move forward.

“We want to be a family-oriented restaurant,” he said. “We intend to be the type of place

where you can relax and have a beer, eat seafood and barbecue. And, of course, look at this amazing view.”

He said that The Hudson is aiming for reasonably priced food and a vastly different vibe from La Marina. “No bottle service, no valet parking, no loud music,” he remarked.

The menu includes BBQ offerings such as pulled pork and ribs as well as burgers, seafood, and salads.

“People should feel comfortable bringing their kids here,” said Becker, noting the foosball and corn hole games available to occupy youngsters.

Currently, children 10 years old and under eat free, provided families purchase at least

one adult meal.The Hudson will be open Thursdays

through Sundays until the end of September and will reopen in May.

The new eatery opened its doors in advance of a public information meeting on the former La Marina site scheduled for September 12 at I.S. 52. in Inwood.

charter schools to enroll local children.“Parents have told us repeatedly that they

want these types of programs,” Kaszynski said. “The more that we can offer under one roof, the better.”

For the current school year, Our Lady of Lourdes enrolled numerous students from St. Rose of Lima, a Washington Heights Catholic school closed by the Archdiocese in June.

Each incoming St. Rose child was paired with a Lourdes student to help ease their transition, Kaszynski said.

The school is focused on creating a welcoming environment, with messages of greetings and inclusion posted throughout the hallways.

“If students feel loved and cared for, they’re going to do better in school,” said Kaszynski.

Eighth-grader Chelsea Chacón has attended Our Lady of Lourdes since kindergarten.

“I like the positive environment here,” she said. “I like how the teachers teach — you know they care and want the best for you.”

Though religion is a part of the school’s curriculum, Kaszynski stressed that Our Lady of Lourdes is open to children of all faiths.

“Though we teach Catholicism, we encourage them to follow the faith of their families,” she said. “There are Catholic values the parents appreciate no matter what faith they practice. We’re relating our faith to everyday life.”

According to the Archdiocese of New York, 43 percent of students enrolled in its schools are not Catholic.

Our Lady of Lourdes offered preschool programs long before the city’s Pre-K for All initiative, said Kaszynski. “It makes for a more seamless transition for elementary school and has prepared our kids well,” she said.

The school also offers language programs in both Italian and Spanish.

Joshua Chambers, a sixth-grade student, has family members who came to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic.

“Because I learned Spanish at school, I can communicate with my grandparents and uncle, who don’t speak any English,” he said. “It’s helped me connect with my family.”

As students returned to class on September 5, Kaszynski noted their enthusiasm for getting back to school. “Seeing their smiles makes it all worthwhile,” she said.

Fifth-grader Madison Trappe said she enjoys learning new languages and is looking forward to learning advanced math.

“I missed my school friends during the summer,” she said. “So I’m glad to be back.”

And Ava too is focused on the year ahead. “I’m ready to learn big-girl second grade

“Los padres nos han dicho repetidamente que quieren este tipo de programas”, dijo Kaszynski. “Cuanto más podamos ofrecer bajo un mismo techo, mejor”.

Para el año escolar actual, Nuestra Señora de Lourdes recibió a numerosos estudiantes de Santa Rosa de Lima, una escuela católica de Washington Heights cerrada por la Arquidiócesis en junio.

Though it has stalled for five years, Williams said there was now “momentum at our backs” to get the legislation passed. “We are poised to get this done,” he stated.

“It’s about time,” McCray shouted.While the bill seems to have strong support

in the City Council, Speaker Corey Johnson has expressed reservations about it. During a radio appearance in August, Johnson said that details still need to be worked through so as not to harm smaller businesses.

“Small businesses are closing because of rent increases, and then [you’re] putting this potential cost on very small businesses that can’t absorb it in the same way a larger company with 50, 100, 500 people can absorb it,” he said.

Derek Perkinson, Director of NYC Chapters for National Action Network, urged businesses to support the legislation.

“We will sit down with businesses to get something that works for both of us. Let’s all come together,” he said. “If you’re a business owner, why wouldn’t you want workers at your best?”

Jackie Orie, a domestic worker for the past 19 years, said she has benefited from paid time off from certain employers, and wants to see others in her line of work to be guaranteed the same treatment.

Orie told rallygoers that she receives two weeks paid vacation and paid personal days, which allowed her to go back to school and

finish her college degree.“Paid personal and vacation days went

a long way in ensuring I could prepare for important exams,” she said.

Airport worker Pedro Gamboa said the legislation would be “a godsend to all of us.”

He said that when his mother in Guatemala became ill, he wasn’t able to lend a hand as sibling took turns taking care of her.

“I know co-workers who fear taking time off, afraid that their jobs won’t be there when they return,” he said.

“Jobs expect a lot from you, but we need more in return,” added LeRoy. “Sometimes you have to fit in everyday life. It’s not like we want to miss work, but sometimes you need to go to the doctor.”

Andrew Rigie, Executive Director of the New York City Hospitality Alliance, which represents restaurants and nightlife venues, is against the legislation in its current form, claiming it would harm small businesses. “Our elected leaders continue to say how important small businesses are to New York City, then go out of their way to make it more difficult for them to survive,” Rigie said.

He suggested that the city should help fund paid time off for small business workers.

“Look at other social benefit programs, like Social Security, even the recently implemented New York State paid family leave, [it is all] conducted through a payroll tax,” Rigie said. “There’s mechanisms to reduce the burdens, offset some of the costs. If we’re a progressive city, we should

come together collectively to do this and not just thrust another unfair mandate on small business owners.”

The group submitted a letter undersigned by the Chambers of Commerce of all five boroughs as well as the National Supermarket Association and NATO, Theatre Owners of New York State, Inc., among others, that urged legislators to reconsider.

“Many businesses are struggling, or simply can’t afford another expensive and complicated government mandate,” stated the letter.

But Williams stressed that the intent was not to hurt small businesses, and vowed that they would “have a seat at the table” when it came to discussions on the legislation.

“We want them to thrive,” he said. “But it can’t be done on the backs of workers.”

“I [am] afraid to ask because I think I’ll get fired,” said Karen LeRoy.

“[Workers] miss birthdays, weddings, and even funerals,” said First Lady Chirlane McCray.

how debtors in the bankruptcy proceeding would be able to recoup their money. The restaurant will be represented by Goldman at the meeting, Becker said.

In order for the bankruptcy judge to approve the transfer of ownership, Goldman’s group had to agree to a number of stipulations, including: closing hours of 11 p.m. on weekdays and Sundays and 12:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, no amplified sound outdoors after 10 p.m., no events with outside promotors, and no valet parking.

In addition, the operation of the restaurant has been separated from that of the marina, which will now be run by NYC Parks but share the same entrance.

For now, the Hudson is operating without a liquor license, as a suspension of the site’s liquor license still stands. Becker said The Hudson plans to apply for a new license following discussions at the public meeting, and hopes to be able to serve alcohol next spring.

“We still need to go through the application process,” he said. “I don’t know if the history of the site will hurt our chances in that regard, but we hope to have one in the future.”

Still, La Marina will be missed by some patrons, who say it became a popular destination precisely because it met a need for a gathering space with a singular ambiance welcoming not only to celebrities but also to everyday residents seeking out diverse social and cultural experiences.

“To be honest, Dyckman has not been the same since La Marina closed,” said one patron who preferred not to give his name. “It was a one-of-a-kind space that had so much to

offer. It was a restaurant, it was a lounge, and there could be music.”

The patron, who said he frequented La Marina every few weeks in the summer, said it was unique.

“Sometimes you can go to nice restaurants but you don’t feel like you belong there. La Marina was the opposite,” he said. “Everyone

felt welcome there.”Indeed, social media posts on La Marina

feature millennial salsa dancers and hookah aficionados one day alongside seniors beachside at a family reunion on another.

La Marina was also the frequent site of charitable and community events, such as back-to-school celebrations and Thanksgiving

Becker said, following the judge’s ruling, the new owners pushed hard to open The Hudson.

“We were working day and night to make it happen. We really wanted to open before the season was over,” he explained. “It’s a good chance for the neighborhood to see what we’re about and what we intend to do here, instead of having to wait until May.”

The restaurant began its “soft opening” period during Labor Day weekend.

After visiting The Hudson, Inwood resident Darren Lucas said the new restaurant was “extremely positive” for the neighborhood.

“It just really gives a piece of comfort and a relaxing environment,” he said.

Another guest, while admiring the waterfront view, said he hoped for a new business that would generate less controversy than La Marina.

“There was too much negativity here with the old place,” he remarked. “This is an amazing location. We need something that everyone can be happy with.”

Becker said the new ownership group is aware of the attention being paid to the site.

“We know that there are lot of eyes that will be on us,” he said. “We want to have something the neighborhood is proud of and intend to be here for the long haul.”
