Full service branch opens in Alabaster

Since 1968, the Birmingham YMCA has served the Alabaster community; we are excited to be able to bring a full-service branch — we will call it the Alabaster Family Branch — to you and to your friends and neighbors.

On October 1 we moved into the Body Shop Health Club at 117 Plaza Circle off Highway 119 — adjacent to 40 acres where the YMCA has been hosting youth sports for several years. This facility offers a variety of healthy lifestyle options including personal fitness assessments, group exercise, strength, and cardio train-ing. There is a child watch area for younger children while their parents work out. Childcare programs will remain (for now) at the original community center on Seventh Street.

We will turn to our community of members and volunteers, and launch a capital campaign to add a youth gymnasium, a family aquatic center and a youth educa-tion/center to house current and future programs including after school child care, teen outreach, English as a Second Language classes and summer youth enrichment programs. As always, financial assistance will be provided to ensure no one is turned away due to an inability to pay.

In a final, and future, phase: we plan to add additional health and wellness facili-ties and group exercise rooms, an indoor aquatic center and additional youth space to complete the facility and meet the needs of youth and families in Alabaster for generations to come.

Volunteer chaplains The Birmingham YMCA is pleased to announce the addition of four new Volunteer Chaplains to our YMCA family.

The reverend Peggy Sanderford Ponder, who has already begun serving at Shades Valley Branch, is an ordained minister and counselor. Typically, you can find

Peggy at Shades Valley on Thursdays and Fridays and by appointment if desired.

The reverend Ed rosser, who is serving at the Trussville Branch, is also an

ordained minister and serves the Solid Rock Lutheran Church in Argo. You can find Ed at Trussville almost every weekday afternoon or

by appointment.The reverend Peggy mcclure, who

will also be serving Trussville Branch as well as Mountain Brook Branch, is an ordained minister and pastor of the First Presbyterian Church in Trussville. In addition, Peggy

is a counselor with Samaritan Counseling Center. Peggy will be alternating her time on Mondays between Mountain Brook and Trussville, or you can arrange an appointment.

Pastor Ed Williams serves our Western Area Branch and is pastor of the First Community Church at ACIPCO. You can find Ed at Western every weekday morning at the front desk.

Ed is already a part of the Y family and is the father of Shayla Crawford, Childcare Director at Western.

As volunteers for pastoral care and other chaplain duties, they have a love for people and are contributing a great service to the Y.

Peggy McClure is an ordained minister, pastor of the first Presbyterian Church in Trussville, and the volunteer chaplain at the Trussville and Mountain Brook branches.

1. ChAPlAInS ARE GOOd lISTEnERS & nOn-JudGEMEnTAlBoth of these are important when someone has something on their heart they need to talk about. We help people work through a problem without judging them or the problem and making them feel guilty, shame or other negative kind of feelings.

2. ChAPlAInS CARE Many chaplains have life experience to draw from that helps us be more relatable. Whether it’s the loss of a child or a spouse, or the birth of a grandchild, many of us have lived through the same life experiences others are going through, tragic and joyous.

3. ChAPlAInS CAn hElP yOu WITh yOuR PROblEMS Talking through your problems with a chaplain can give you new insights in handling them better, or inspire new and creative solutions. We don’t always offer solutions to problems on our own, but guide you toward your own discovery.

Montgomery native and multi-platinum record producer Kevin “Khao” Cates will bring “Bridge da Gap: Rebuilding the Foundation of our Youth” to the 2011 Southern Regional Achievers Teen Summit, January 14-16, at the Birmingham YMCA Youth Center.

Hosted by the Birmingham YMCA Y Achiev-ers Program, University of Alabama School of Medicine’s Office of Diversity & Multicultural Affairs and Chapter of Student National Medical Association, the program addresses self love, deter-mination and respect; anger management and the company you keep; plus alcohol and drug abuse, and HIV prevention.

Teens from Alabama, Florida and Georgia will also take campus tours of Birmingham-Southern College, Miles College, Samford University and UAB; and will march in the Civil Rights District.

college goal Sunday brings national attention to local college initiatives

On the culminating day of the summit, in col-laboration with the Lumina Foundation, YMCA of the USA will bring College Goal Sunday. Designed to help students prepare for College with assistance in filling out forms, at events across the state the initiative will•Educational partners include the University of Alabama, University of West Alabama, Jefferson State Community College, University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Jacksonville State University. Community collaborators are the Junior League of Birmingham and YMCA of Calhoun County.• Offer free, on-site professional assistance completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA);• Provide advice from professionals about financial aid resources and how to apply; and• Distribute information regarding state-wide student services and admission requirements.Additional dates will be set in early 2011.

NOrTHeAsT & wesTerN AreAAfterschool programs to receive education grants

After school and summer camp participants at our Western Area and Northeast Family Branches will gain exposure to higher education exposure through the Y-Higher Learning grant. These branches were selected to be a part of this initiative in an effort to raise the awareness and desire of inner city youth to higher education options.

The program will show k-8 students what “going to college” really means. Students will learn about public and private universities and colleges throughout Alabama. They will learn about the requirements for enrolling in schools of higher learning and have opportunities to explore different career options. Tutors and mentors will be provided, and students will tour colleges and universities across the state of Alabama.

When students graduate from high school, it is the goal of the program that they will aspire to achieve academically, either through a school of higher learning or an identified trade or skill of passion.

Multi-platinum musician and producer Kevin "Khao" Cates will bring the "Bridge Da Gap" teen summit to the Youth Center January 14-18.

We often hear about how the YMCA’s philanthropic mission through the Strong Kids & Communities Campaign positively affects those receiving assistance, but what about those helping

to provide assistance? For one Y member, giving back to her community by enthusiastically embracing all aspects of the annual support campaign has been an eye-opening experience, and a joyful one.

Longtime Mountain Brook Branch member Patty Roberts was first introduced to the YMCA’s charitable mission after accepting an invitation to become a board member in 2009. Since then, Patty has helped the Mountain Brook branch raise thousands of dollars ensuring families can continue their memberships during difficult economic times, and even providing healthy snacks for over 700 children in Afterschool programs throughout the Birmingham YMCA Association.

On a recent visit to the YMCA Youth Center downtown, Patty had a chance to see the Afterschool program in action, handing out healthy snacks such as fruit, bottled water and pretzels to children in the program. Patty says one child in particular caught her attention, a little girl who was stuffing her pretzels into her backpack instead of eating them with her friends.

“I asked her why she didn’t eat her snack and she told me that she wanted her family to be healthy, too,” Patty said. “She was taking them home to share. Of course, I gave her another bag.

“They used to get chips and soft drinks. Now, thanks to donations that we receive, they get apples, granola bars, pretzels and water,” she added. “The kids and teens are truly thankful. It may be the only piece of fresh fruit they get all week.”

Late last year, Patty felt compelled to allow more people a glimpse of the Y’s outreach. With the help of friends Marcie DeBardeleben and Lind Burks, Patty opened up her home for an evening with the goal of educating a gathering of friends and neighbors about the impact they can have through the YMCA’s Strong Kids & Communities. She succeeded beyond her wildest dreams.

“Everyone came and listened as personal stories were shared about the effects our programs have on others,” said Patty. “I was in awe of how genuinely gracious my friends were. In just three hours, my friends donated over $4,000!”

On behalf of the over 8,000 children and adults who have been helped through the generosity of you and 2,754 fellow YMCA donors — “thank you.”
