Xylem Helps World’s Tallest ‘Flower‘ Tower

As the tallest manmade structure in the world at 829,84 meters, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai represents a number of unique engineering achievements. The triple-lobed footprint design of the building is based on the shape of the Hymenocallis desert flower native to the United Arab Emirates. And like all desert flowers, the Burj Khalifa requires a highly effective and efficient watermanagement system to thrive in very challenging conditions. One of the major challenges was pumping water over half a mile to keep the building‘s HVAC system operating efficiently and the potable water flowing throughout the structure. The building’s water system supplies an average of 250,000 gallons of water per day, while the condensate collection system provides about 15 million gallons of supplement water per year, equal to about 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools. Additionally, at peak cooling, the Burj Khalifa requires about 10,000 tons of cooling, equal to the cooling capacity provided by about 10,000 tons of melting ice. The building designers knew the HVAC system would require very robust and dependable pumping equipment and expertise in water technology applications. The Burj Khalifa team, working closely with AJR Water Technology, selected Xylem’s Lowara products to provide the critical systems that would ensure the Burj Khalifa would become a towering achievement in energy efficiency.

Emirates, and is the tallest manmade structure in the

world, at 829.84 m. Construction began on 21

September 2004, with the exterior of the structure

completed on 1 October 2009 and opening on 4

January 2010.

The Lowara GHV series booster sets are fully automatic

booster sets for water supply. They are equipped with

2-4 variable speed pumps with a Hydrovar pump

controller, pressure transmitters and control panel, all

mounted on a frame for easy installation. The Hydrovar

pump controller is easy to program, designed for

maximum energy efficiency and can communicate with

a BMS system via Modbus. The GHV series can be

fitted with vertical multistage pumps e-SV series from 3

to 125.

Xylem supplied 6 SV series water transfer sets (11KW-200KW) and 7 SV, SHE and SHS series water booster sets (4KW- 37KW) utilizing vertical and horizontal multistage pumps through ARJ Water Technology. GHV water booster sets, which are used to boost water pressure, are fitted with Hydrovar® variable speed drives designed for challenging pumping applications.

Hydrovar technology sets the standard in efficiency Variable speed drives using Hydrovar technology reduces energy consumption by up to 30% while increasing customers’ comfort by providing them constant residual pressure at any water outlet, day or night, regardless of the number of users. Hydrovar technology varies pump speed to ensure the water flow rate/pressure meets the demand with energy efficient motors to ensure energy is not wasted. Each set comprises two main pumps and one stand-by pump. Pumps are located in the basement level and at two additional maintenance floors located near floor 60 and 90. These pumps are essential for the operation of the tower and the comfort of its occupants. Since its grand opening in 2009, the tower has become the centerpiece of Downtown Dubai. Viewed from the base or the air, Burj Khalifa is evocative of the onion domes prevalent in Islamic architecture. The exterior cladding is made of reflective aluminum glazing and textured stainless steel spandrel panels. A Y-shaped floor plan provides breath-taking panoramic views of the Arabian Gulf.
