On behalf of the Local Organization Committee, it is both my pleasure and honor to invite you to the 25th international Electromagnetic Induction Workshops (EMIW2020), the major event of EM geophysics community and IAGA Division VI. The 25th Workshop will be held on 13- 19, September 2020 in Kuşadası by institutions and companies from Turkey, represented by a local organizing committee (LOC). The University of Ankara has responsibility for the coordination of the workshop arrangements. This is the second one organized in Turkey after 40 years, the 5th Workshop was held in 1980 and organized by Istanbul University.

The EM Workshop at Kuşadası will certainly be an exciting opportunity for scientists, researchers, students and representatives of the many sectors of industry and public institutions to share and discuss latest developments on EM methodology and technology.

The workshop location Kuşadası is a Mediterranean resort town on Aegean seaside. The name comes from bird island, as the island has the shape of a bird’s head as seen from the sea. The workshop venue is located on Aegean Sea cost with a beach length of 500 m and it is in close vicinity of some important locations for scientists and particularly the EM community.

In the ancient times, the region was named as Ionia and contributed the world history in a variety of ways. It was the important gate point for the migration of first farmers to Europe starting from 9000 BC during Neolithic revolution. The biggest and most populated Hellenistic and Roman cities in the world was founded in the Ionia. The nearest ancient city to workshop venue is Ephesus (8 kms). The city was an important center for rising of Christianity. St. Paul lived in Ephesus from AD 52 to 54 and was working with the congregation and organizing missionary activity into the hinterlands. The Basilica of St. John was built in the 6th century AD, under emperor Justinian I. The Miletus ancient city (50 kms) is the home of Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes which are the most famous Miletus natural scholars of classical times. In 582 BC, Thales predicted the solar eclipse and produced new theories in astronomy and geometry. Anaximander and Anaximenes has formulated the first scientific rule as “sufficient reason for a natural phenomenon exists in nature”. But, they assumed that it is possible to reach the objective reality by only cognition without doing experiment. The word “magnet” is originated from the ancient city of Magnesia (128 kms). The first standard coin (the invention of money) was released in Sardis (145 kms) about 650 BC. The ancient city Aphrodisias (151 kms) was famous for its sculpture school and in progress between the years 1 BC and 6 AC.

There will be two excursions. The first one includes the ancient cities of Ephesus and Aphrodisias. The second covers the ancient Hierapolis and Pamukkale travertines. The route of both excursions follow ‘Menderes Graben’ where Menderes River flows in a series of curves and bends. The term ‘meander’ derives from the Menderes River. One of the Earth’s largest metamorphic core complexes and its detachment fault can be observed in the graben. Some archeological, cultural and geological information will be provided in the workshop guide. The other interesting locations in Selçuk (8 kms) such as Artemis Temple, St. John Basilica, House of the Virgin Mary, Ephesus Museum may be visited by the participants.

Finally, I would like to inform that the theme of the workshop is chosen to be “virtue” which is personified with the statue of ancient Goddess Arete found at the Celsus Library, Ephesus. Arete is accompanied by three more statues at the niches of the Celsus Library: Sophia, Episteme and Ennoia symbolizing wisdom, knowledge and intelligence, respectively. These are the values that light the way of scientists.

LOCAL ORGANIZING COMMITTEE

The research activities of IAGA Division VI (www.emiw.org, Electromagnetic Induction in the Earth and Planetary Bodies) involve the investigation of all theoretical and practical aspects of the spatial distribution of electrical properties within the Earth’s and planetary interiors, and particularly electrical conductivity, and their relationship with physical parameters considered in seismology, rheology, petrology, hydrology, volcanology, etc., Studies are applied to elucidate geological structures and processes ranging from meter to mantle scale. The number of members of the division exceeds 500. The international Electromagnetic (EM) Induction Workshops are an important event for both the international research community and for many sectors of industry and government that use EM methods for geothermal, mining, petroleum and energy exploration, groundwater and environmental resource evaluation, geohazard monitoring such as GIC (Geomagnetically Induced Currents in technological systems) and many other fields. The workshop as a whole is suitable as well for graduate students and junior scientists.

IAGA, (http://www.iaga-aiga.org) the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy is one of the eight Associations of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). It is a non-governmental body funded through the subscriptions paid to IUGG by its Member Countries.

IUGG, (http://www.iugg.org) is the international organization dedicated to advancing, promoting, and communicating knowledge of the Earth system, its space environment, and the dynamical processes causing change.
