Barcelona is located on the coast and bounded by the Collserola ridge and rivers Besosand Llobregat. The city is less than 150 kilometres from the Pyrenees. Barcelona's locationon the shores of the Mediterranean means that it enjoys a warm, welcoming climate andpleasant temperatures all year round. Rainfall is occasionally heavy, with levels of around1.000mm per year. This helps to maintain the many green areas around the city.

Barcelona is the city of marvels. The old town, comprising the Gothic Quarter, the Riberaand Raval districts, and famed for its historical monuments, narrow streets and bohemianatmosphere, is a perfect place for a stroll. A wander through the maze of streets is essentialin order to understand the different periods in the history of Barcelona and to admire itsfinest monuments: traces of the Roman wall glimpsed between well-preserved Gothicbuildings, the remains of the Jewish Quarter, witnesses to the industrial expansion of the19th century and the design of the 20th. Musicians in the medieval streets provide theideal accompaniment. The city also has the biggest selection of modernist architecture:a genuine open-air museum. Most of the buildings, built in this unique style, are in theEixample, a district planned in 1860 by the engineer Ildefons Cerdà which constitutes aunique model of European urban planning. The Sagrada Família, the Casa Batlló, the CasaAmatller and the Casa Milà are some examples of this.

Barcelona is the only European capital with over four kilometres of beaches where youcan enjoy the most modern amenities, the beaches are not far form Barcelona's historicaland cultural landmarks, and they have opened up our modern and cosmopolitan city tothe sea. Today, the Olympic Harbour and the old port, the Port Vell, are some of the mainmeeting places, with many bars, restaurants, shops and recreational areas. Barcelona is,without a doubt, a city of marvels: on foot, by bicycle or bus, it is a magnificent spectaclewhich you should not miss.

Barcelona is known throughout the world as a cultural city, with an important heritage anda permanent and exciting range of activities on offer. It is a city of renowned architecturalinterest, from its Roman walls to the new urban planning schemes of the eighties. Particularhighlights are its modernist heritage and contemporary architecture. Over 40 museums:monographic art collections such as the Museu Picasso, the Fundació Joan Miró and theFundació Antoni Tàpies which hold permanent exhibitions of works by the artists as wellas temporary shows; the world's finest collection of Romanesque art at the Museu Nacionald'Art de Catalunya; temporary exhibitions of contemporary art at the Museu d'ArtContemporani de Barcelona - MACBA; and numerous art galleries.

Barcelona is famed for the wide variety of its musical events. From classical music, operaand ballet, through jazz, flamenco, pop and rock, to the most innovative festivals. In 1999the city regained its opera house, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, and opened the Auditori witha programme featuring the most diverse genres and musical styles. In addition to thesemusical events we find those of the Palau de la Música Catalana, a jewel of modernistarchitecture.

Welcome letter

B A R C E L O N A2 0 0 6

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is my great pleasure to welcome you

to Barcelona and to the 18th Congress of the European Association for Cranio-

Maxillofacial Surgery.

The Scientific Committee is working to set up an outstanding program with

symposiums, state of the art conferences, panels, controversies and masterclasses

covering the whole field of cranio-maxillofacial surgery. Experts in reconstruction

oral cancer, implant surgery, orthognatic surgery, rhinoplasty will share their experience and bring up-to-

date and didactic information in this rapidly evolving field.

The congress venue is very spacious with a large conference hall and smaller halls. The site is well placed

in the city with several hotels within walking distance and easy access to the Underground and Bus services.

Barcelona’s public transport is efficient and fairly cheap. Taxi service is found everywhere and 10 Euros

will take you from the periphery to the centre of town. We will try our best to ensure that the congress’

social events keep up the high standard attained in previous occasions.

We would like to give a special welcome to our Guest Societies which has accepted to be our guests in

our congress. We would also like to express our thanks to the industries attending the meeting for their

generous support and especially to the Gold and Silver Sponsor companies.

We hope that you will enjoy the Congress and that your interaction with your colleagues from many different

countries will stimulate a creative exchange of ideas and will be personally rewarding. We also hope and

trust that you will enjoy your visit to the very beautiful city of Barcelona in September 2006.

We look forward to seeing you in Barcelona.

Sincerely yours,

Guillermo Raspall, MD; DMD

The Maritime Museumof Barcelona is located in the building of the Drassanes Reials (Royal Shipyards) ofBarcelona, at the foot of the mount of Montjuïc, in the area called the Port Vell (Old Port)of Barcelona. The original function of this building was to house the shipyards for theCatalan-Aragonese Crown. The Royal Shipyards of Barcelona are a unique example ofsecular Gothic architecture for maritime uses in the world, because though similar facilitiesexisted in the Mediterranean, this is the only one that has conserved the original structureand layout.
