HISTORY...

In 1961, 31 Inc. was founded

by Bob Cornell, nephew of the

originator of Tech Rubber. After

working 15 years for Tech, Bob

broke away to start his own

company at the age of 32.

Searching for a name, Bob

remembered the story of how

Phillips 66 Oil Company was

named using the age of its

founder. Liking the idea, he

attempted to name his

company “32”.

Trademarks

blocked his

attempt, so

he decided

on the name

“31 Incorporated”. While it

seems a more fitting name, our

brand name “X-tra Seal” tends

to be easily forgotten. 31 Inc.

is easily remembered and also

translates easily into other

languages.

Since 1985, 31 Inc. has

experienced dramatic growth

not only domestically, but also

in the international marketplace.

With its International

Headquarters located in the

small farming community of

Newcomerstown, OH USA,

hundreds of families worldwide

depend on 31 Inc. for their

livelihoods.

QUALITY...

Dedicated to manufacturing

quality tire repair materials,

31 Inc. has implemented

rigorous quality control

procedures. In house quality

measurement and control is

assigned to trained individuals

who closely monitor production

at every stage of manufacturing.

Every incoming and 31 Inc.

mixed batch is tested against

predetermined standards.

These standards have been

proven by many years

of successful product

performance in the

field. Raw materials

as well as finished

products are tested in 31 Inc.’s

modern lab which contains

various pieces of high-tech

equipment including

a variety of special

test equipment

developed and used

exclusively by

31 Inc. Controlled

and reported

properties include tensile

strength, modulus, elongation,

hardness, specific gravity, vis-

cosity, and cure rate. These

properties and characteristics

are essential in establishing

and maintaining consistently

high quality production.

TRAINING &EDUCATION...

31 Inc. is committed to

training and educating industry

personnel on the application

of tire repair materials. As

part of our training and

education program,

31 Inc. offers X-tra

Seal repair videos.

These repair videos,

dealing with subjects

such as puncture and section

repairs, show the proper

methods of performing tire

repairs recommended by the

RMA, TIA, all major tire

manufacturers, and responsible

manufacturers of tire repair

materials.

As part of our training and

education program, 31 Inc.

conducts on-site

training for distributors,

technicians, and users.

Our qualified regional

instructors, all of whom

have over 20 years

experience in the tire

repair industry and many

over 40 years, teach proper

industry recommended repair

procedures and practices,

giving technicians, installers,

and users practical hands-on

experience.

RESEARCH &DEVELOPMENT...

Research and development

of new and existing products

is conducted by 31 Inc. qualified

chemists and engineers.

Outside laboratories

are used when

tests are needed

to evaluate

product and

cannot be

conducted in house.

The BF Goodrich Research

and Development Testing

Center, the world famous

Standard Testing Labs, and

other prominent Akron, OH

area testing facilities are used.

The chemists, engineers, and

technicians working with

31 Inc. have over 100 years of

combined experience in rubber

and rubber products R & D.

This experience has been

gained not only at 31 Inc.,

but also in years of working

for major companies such as

Goodyear, Cooper, Kex, and

Hercules. These technicians

are committed to supplying all

types of high quality products

and the technology needed to

serve the industry’s needs.

INDUSTRY STANDARD PUNCTURE REPAIR PROCEDURES1. Inspection

Before repairing, determine if the injuryis within repairable limits (see pg. 56 for description of repairable limits.) Mark the injury, then remove puncturingobject from the tire. Before deflating, apply soap solution to the tire to determine if air loss is from one or morepuncture(s). Unseat the beads andapply approved bead lubricant. Removethe tire from the wheel carefully to avoidfurther damage, especially to the beads, and place the tire on a spreader.

2. ProbingProbe the puncture with a blunt, smooth surface awl or other probingtool to determine the size and directionof the injury, making sure no foreignmaterial is left in the injury.

3. Internal ExaminationSpread the beads, marking the puncture with a tire crayon. Inspect for evidence of other damage. (eg.damage to the bead area, run flat, etc.)If after a thorough internal examinationthe tire is determined to be repairableand injury is within repairable limits, proceed to the next step.

4. Select Proper Repair MaterialsCenter the repair unit over the injuryand outline with crayon an area slightly larger than the repair. Repairmaterials must be selected which arerecommended for the constructiontype (radial, belted bias, bias) of thetire to be repaired.

5. CleaningClean the area inside the outlined areathoroughly with a pre-buff chemicalcleaner (Do NOT use gasoline!) Thisremoves dirt, mold lubricants, etc., and also keeps buffing tools clean.Chemical cleaning is not to be substituted for mechanical buffing.Make certain that no loose or frayedwire ends protrude through the inner liner.

6. BuffingBuff the cleaned area thoroughly to aflat, smooth velvet surface (RMA #1buffed texture for chemical vulcanizingrepairs, or RMA #3 buffed texture foruncured repairs), taking care not togouge the inner liner or expose casingfabric. Remove buffing dust from theinner liner with a vacuum cleaner.

7. Puncture PreparationReam the puncture channel with a fine reamer from the insidein a clockwise direction to prepare the injury. All exposedcables must be removed to prevent further damage to the tire or the repair.

8. After completing basic preparation, finish repair by selecting one of the following repair methods:

RMA Buffing Textures

CHEMICAL VULCANIZING REPAIRS

a. Fill Injury - Cement the puncturechannel and fill the injury from theinside with contour conforming material. Cut or buff material flushwith the inner liner. Follow repairmaterial manufacturer’s recommendations. It is very important to fill the injury to prevent rusting of steel cables ordeterioration of fabric.

b. Cementing - Always use chemicalvulcanizing cement recommendedby the repair material manufacturerand apply a thin, even coating to the prepared and buffed surface.Cement must be allowed to dry thoroughly!

c. Repair Unit Application - Tire mustbe in a relaxed position when therepair unit is being installed. (DO NOT SPREAD THE BEADSEXCESSIVELY). Remove backingfrom suitable repair unit and centerover the injury. Stitch repair downthoroughly with stitching tool, working from the center out.

COMBINATION REPAIR UNITS

a. Cementing - Always use the cementrecommended by the repair materialmanufacturer. Apply a thin, evencoating to the prepared, buffed surface and inside the injury channel. Cement must be allowed to dry thoroughly!

b. Repair Unit Insertion - Remove the backing from the stem and repairhead. Pull through according tomanufacturer’s recommendations.

c. Stitching - Stitch repair head downfirmly with stitching tool, workingfrom the center out.

RMA #1 RMA #2 RMA #3 RMA #4 RMA #5 RMA #6

9. Finish RepairRegardless of type of repair used, the finished repair should fillthe injury and seal the inner liner. After inflating, check finishedrepair, both beads, and the valve stem with soap and watersolution to ensure a complete seal.

INDUSTRY STANDARD SECTION REPAIR PROCEDURES

I. INITIAL TIRE INSPECTION

A. An injury that penetrates 75% or more of the body pliesand exceeds puncture repair limits requires a sectionrepair. DO NOT attempt to repair this type of damagewith nail hole repair units. Demount the tire from thewheel and locate the injury.

B. Remove any injuring object and make a careful visualinspection to determine the size, angle, and extent of theinjury. Use a probing awl to probe for unseen internaldamage. Determine whether the injury is withinrepairable limits. (See pg. 56 for section repair limits.)

II. FILLING THE INJURY AREA

A. Preparing the Outside of the Tire

1) Using a low speed buffer and a carbide cutter, begin removing all damaged rubber, both inside andoutside the tire and steel cord in the injury area. Allbroken cords and loose strands of cable must beremoved, leaving only solid, undamaged rubber atthe sides of the opening. If in the tread area, use anappropriate buffing wheel to buff at 45˚ angle down to the cord and 90˚ through the cord.

2) Using a high speed buffer with a pencil stone, polishthe exposed cord ends, being careful not to scorchthe rubber. Clean away any rubber or steel dust leftbehind both inside and outside the tire. Using a lowspeed buffer and an appropriate buffing wheel, roundover the edges of the prepared area.

B. Preparing the Inside of the Tire

1) Clean the inner liner around the injury area with apre-buff chemical rubber cleaner. Using an inner linerscraper, remove dirt, mold lubricants, and other contaminants.

2) Using a low speed buffer with an appropriate buffingwheel, buff an area about 1" larger than the injuryarea to an RMA #1 texture. As on the other side, round over the edges of the prepared area. Use avacuum cleaner to remove buffing dust.

3) Measure the thickness of the tire at the injury areaand note this measurement for future reference. Alsomeasure and record the dimensions of the repair area.

4) Spread a generous coating of Black VulcanizingCement over the prepared injury area both inside and outside the tire.

C. Filling the Injury

1) Secure a backing plate on the inner liner. Fill theinjury area with an appropriate filling material.Stitchand pack material so as to avoid creating any gaps orair pockets, working from the center outward, makingsure to stitch rubber over the edges. Filling materialshould be about 1/8" (3mm) above the outside of thetire when finished packing. Remove the backing plateand cure the filling material following manufacturer’scure time recommendations.

III. REPAIR UNIT APPLICATION

A. Select the proper size reinforced repair unit and center itover the injury on the inner liner. Mark an area about 1/2"(13mm) larger than the selected repair unit. Clean theselected area completely with a chemical pre-buff. Usingan inner liner scraper, remove all dirt, mold lubricants, and other contaminants.

B. Using a low speed buffer and an appropriate buffingwheel, buff the selected area to an RMA #1 texture.Remove all buffing dust with a vacuum.

C. Using a chemical vulcanizing cement recommended by the repair manufacturer, apply a thin, even coating tothe prepared and buffed surface. Allow cement to dry thoroughly!

D. While beads are in a relaxed position, remove backingfrom repair unit and center the repair over the injury.Stitch repair down thoroughly with a stitching tool, workingfrom the center out, making sure to stitch the edges.

E. Once the repair unit has been stitched down, apply agenerous coating of Inner Liner Sealer to the edges ofthe repair unit.

IV. FINISHING THE REPAIR

Using a low speed buffer and an appropriate buffing wheel, lightly buff the outside of the repaired area until the rubberis flush with the surrounding area, presenting a smooth finished appearance. For tread area repairs, use aregroover to replace original tread design. For sidewallrepairs, apply a Section ID Patch on the outside of the tirenext to the repaired area to indicate the location of the section repair.
