Welcome  and  Introduc9ons

The  UT  Professional  Development  Center  (PDC)  helps  individuals  meet  professional  and  personal  goals  and  helps  organiza0ons  develop  employees  and  improve  performance  through  its  program,  consul0ng,  coaching  and  facilita0on  services.    PDC  designs  and  delivers  face-‐to-‐face  and  online  noncredit  programs  for  individuals  interested  in  improving  their  professional  skills  or  who  seek  a  creden0al  or  a  career  change.        XTOL  (Experien9al  Teaching  Online)  was  founded  by  Cogni0ve  Science  visionary  Professor  Roger  Schank,  based  on  the  beliefs  that  students  learn  best  by  doing  –  by  performing  authen0c  work  in  the  context  of  realis0c  tasks  —  and  that  the  best  way  to  teach  is  via  one-‐on-‐one  mentorship.

 Experien9al  Teaching  Online  (XTOL)

The  Professional  Development  Center  at  The  University  of  Texas  at  Aus0n  has  partnered  with  XTOL  to  offer  four  skills-‐based  technology  career  boot  camp  cer0ficate  programs:    •  Agile  Web  Applica0on  Development  in  Ruby  on

Rails  •  Mobile  Applica0on  Development  •  Data  Analy0cs/Big  Data  •  eCommerce  Technology

Introducing:      Technology  Career

Boot  Camps

The  myths:  The  soWware  industry  operates  at  the  bleeding  edge  of  technology,  and  soWware  companies  are  staffed  by  an0social  nerds  who  stare  at  computer  screens  all  day.    The  reality:  It’s  a  people  business  that  uses  technology

•   nontrivial  soWware  projects  are  always  developed  by  teams  •  “we’re  mostly  in  the  human  communica0on  business”  •  successes  stem  primarily  from  good  human  interac0on  •  “the  major  problems  of  our  work  are  not  so  much  technological  as

sociological  in  nature.”  •  You’ll  always  be  working  with  people

•  customers  and  users  to  understand  their  problems  •  a  design  team  to  propose  a  solu0on  •  customers  and  users  (again)  to  validate  a  solu0on  •  other  developers,  QA  people,  product  managers,  project  managers,

etc…

The  High-‐Tech  Illusion:  Peopleware

by  DeMarco  and  Lister

•  Story-‐Centered  Curricula  -‐-‐  proven  highly  effec0ve  in  skill-‐building  programs,  developed  with  industry  pioneers  •  Students  work  is  situated  in  a  realis0c  story  of  professional  prac0ce  –  the  work

situa0on  to  which  they  aspire  •  Students  reflect  on  lessons  learned  from  their  experiences,  then  they  go  on  to

the  next  “scene”  in  the  story,  which  is  linked  to  and  builds  on  what  they  have  done

•  Students  receive  feedback  on  interim  deliverables  and  then  iterate  to  achieve  skill  mastery

 •  Faculty  mentors  enhance  online  experience

•  One-‐to-‐one  coaching  nurtures  excellence

•  Strong  emphasis  on  job  skills  beyond  the  technical  •  Principled  decision  making,  teamwork,  verbal  and  wricen  communica0on,

nego0a0on,  rela0onship  management

•  Students  build  a  porNolio  of  professional-‐quality  work  •  Deliverables  roll  up  into  a  pordolio  that  can  be  shown  to  employers

XTOL’s  Unique  Approach:  Story-‐Centered  Curricula  accelerate  skill  building

Total  Master’s  Graduates

•  Over  700  graduates  from  CMU  -‐-‐  Silicon  Valley  (SoWware  Engineering  and  SoWware  Management  programs)

•  Over  500  graduates  from  sister  program  in  eBusiness    at  CMU  in  Picsburgh

The  Technology  Career  Boot  Camp  Cer0ficate  Programs  offer:

•  100%  project  based,  learn-‐by-‐doing  •  Mostly  online,  collabora0on-‐driven  courses  that

provide  real-‐world,  skills-‐based  training  •  Live,  virtual  mentors  who  coach  the  students,  rather

than  lecture,  and  evaluate  based  on  the  work  produced

•  Three  face-‐to-‐face  sessions  at  Thompson  Conference  Center  to  further  encourage  teamwork  and  interac0on  between  faculty  and  students.

Technology  Career  Boot  Camps:

How  they  work

XTOL’s  Unique  Approach:  Story-‐Centered  Curricula  –

the  experience

¡  Resume  Building/Interview  Skills    -‐-‐  the  program  supports  students  with  development  of  resumes,  cover  lecers  and  pordolios  of  work,  and  hone    interview  skills  in  prepara0on  for  presen0ng  to  prospec0ve  employers.

¡  Professional  PorNolio  –  over  the  course  of  the  programs,  students  gain  end-‐to-‐end  project  experience  working  on  realis0c,  in-‐demand  soWware  technology  projects  ¡  Students  develop  professional  pordolios  to

demonstrate  specific  skill  competencies  to  poten0al  employers.
