The Mandy Coats Memorial Scholarship was established in 2004 and first awarded in 2005 to memorialize

Nancy Amanda Coats. Born on November 14, 1977, in Pine Bluff,she was the daughter of Jimmy and Sandy

Coats. After graduation from White Hall High School in 1996, Mandy attended the University of Arkansas at

Monticello until her diagnosis with Batten’s Disease. At the age of 26, Mandy joined her Lord on May 23, 2004.

She was an active member of First Baptist Church in White Hall.

Mandy’s life was a constant testimony. She was a friend to all because she accepted everyone around her

without bias or prejudice. Her selfless display of love and energy, even when she had little energy herself,

taught the true meaning of compassion. This pronounced concern for the well-being of others, in spite of fail-

ing health, defined Mandy. She shared her love for Jesus routinely and unashamedly – how much she adored

Him, how much He loved her, and toward the end of her life how ready she was to see Him. This scholarship

was established to enable Mandy’s spirit to live beyond her lifetime. Her greatest desire upon entering col-

lege was to grow intellectually so that she could help those around her. This scholarship will allow deserving

students to achieve the opportunities that Mandy cherished but was never able to enjoy.

The Scholarship Committee will review all applications with a tremendous amount of thought and prayer.

Additionally, the Board may require an interview as part of the final selection process. Offering the opportunity to pursue higher education to

ultimately change the lives of others keeps Mandy’s memory alive.

All applicants for a scholarship must meet the following requirements:

•Must be an Arkansas high school senior who is applying for a college scholarship for the freshman year;

•Must be an active member of a church and/or other Christian organization;

•Must plan to attend an accredited college or university on a full-time basis;

•Must be of high moral character, exhibit a strong work ethic, and be intellectually qualified for the desired pursuit;

•Must have and maintain a grade point average of 2.0 or better (scholarship awards will be forfeited if the student’s GPA falls below 2.0);

•Must be willing to accept a scholarship as a gift from God and be willing to later help others as a result.

PROCEDURE:1. Print three pages (this page, the application form, and the reference form).

2. Complete and sign the application form and return by APRIL 1 to the address shown. Also on a

separate sheet, please answer the following questions:

a. Why are you applying for this scholarship?

b. How do your educational desires fit into your life’s plan?

c. List any honors, achievements, and/or awards from your church, school, or community.

d. Describe your work experience if applicable.

e. Describe the happiest moment of your life.

f. Describe your most difficult life experience. How did you endure or overcome it?

g. Feel free to share any other information that would be helpful to the Scholarship Committee

in understanding your situation.

3. Send TWO copies of the reference form to individuals who are not related to you. One of these individuals should be a minister at your

church or sponsor of your Christian organization. The other reference can be a friend, employer, or neighbor who would know your character

or work ethic. Ask them to complete and mail directly to the address shown.

Note: You can download the Mandy Coats Scholarship Application form by going to www.ahsaa.org. Click on information (red tag line), then

A Message from a Concerned Administrator

Dear Parents and Fans of WCC Student Athletes,

I am excited about the future of the White County Central athletic program! Administration, coaches, Board members, student athletes and volunteers are doing many things to try to build a program of excellence in every sport in which we participate. I have always said that if we are going to do it (whatever the sport), I want us to do it well. I want our stu-dents to walk proud as they wear the WCC uniform. I want them to be respected on every field or in every gym they enter. I believe that these are things that you, as parents and fans, want as well. Building a program takes time and dedication on the part of the players and the coaches.

There are four roles in a contest: coach, participant, of-ficial and spectator. Each person should only assume one role. Your role as a parent and/or fan is the spectator. The athletes need to hear one instructional voice and that is the voice of the coach that has been instructing them during practice, is the voice they should hear for instruction dur-ing games. If they are looking to you for instruction during a game, you have not released them to the game and to the coach. The voice of the spectator is one of encourager. Because we want our athletes to demonstrate poise and confidence, spectators should model for the student ath-letes poise and confidence as well. Encouragement sounds less like criticism of officials and coaching decisions and more like support of the athlete. Spectators should focus on encouraging the team, not just one player. Consider all. Encourage all. Student athletes love having fans at games and so do I. They love to hear fans cheer, and it motivates them to play harder.

Please know that it is the responsibility of the coach to man-age the game:

• game planning • preparation of players (which includes their role as a team player)• substitution decisions determined by the flow of the game• knowledge of each player’s strengths and weaknesses

Finally, to establish equity between the competing teams, a coach must develop a respectful relationship with officials, which we hope leads to a fairly officiated game. When offi-cials get upset with fans, judgment calls are forfeited. Some schools have a bad reputation with officials; let’s not be one of those schools. Let’s build a program of champions and establish a reputation of respect, courtesy and pride.

I’d like to share an excerpt from an article I read recently about character and athletics.

There are many opportunities to teach life lessons to student-athletes through athletics. When approached in the appro-priate fashion, the peaks and valleys of athletics can help prepare student-athletes for real life. Opportunities may arise throughout the course of an athletic season or career such as: the ability to deal with adversity, to work with others towards a common goal, to overcome obstacles, to fail, to be defeated, and to win. All of these athletic situations help student-athletes deal with future real-life situations that require strength, courage, hard work, mental toughness, and/or humility. These educational opportunities can either be harnessed and cultivated or ignored and wasted. It is my contention that these learning opportunities must be seized, especially within the context of character development. There is not a better way to bring about social change than through sports. It is in this context that I believe sports should be utilized at the grassroots level to build character in its participants. As a society, we place such a high premium on winning that the coaches, players, and parents sometimes forget the true reason for sport. Athlet-ics are meant to help develop the whole person – the body in conjunction with the mind. If we neglect the latter, we are do-ing everyindividual who participates in athletics and society in general, a great disservice.

Your thoughtful consideration of the contents of this letter will truly be appreciated.

Sincerely and respectfully,

Sheila Whitlow, Superintendent
