Karate-do Federation (EGKF), entities that I have the honor to chair, it is with great pleasure that I

announce and invite you to the XIX EGKF Championship, which will take place from 19 to 23 September,

in the hospitable and truly sporting city of Maia (in the district of Porto in Northern Portugal).

The centrality of Maia, the professionalism of the organizers and the acknowledged hospitality of the

Portuguese people will, I am sure, make the XIX EGKF Championship a Goju-ryu unforgettable experience.

Message from the Mayor of Maia

I conceive sport, in its multiple modalities and dimensions, as a phenomenon of modernity, which reveals the degree of

human and social development of contemporary societies.

Recognizing the importance and contributions that it gives to the strengthening of social cohesion in our community, the

sports phenomenon has deserved by the Municipality of Maia, a very particular attention and a very strong investment, both in

sports equipment, which allow a regular practice adequate and safe, as in human resources and programs that leverage the

promotion and development of sport throughout the county.

Our focus is firstly to provide as many people, children, young people, adults and seniors as possible with a healthy

workout and sport for all.

But along with this strategy of widespread promotion of sports, Maia has been highlighted by the statement in several

modalities whose results clearly demonstrate the enthusiasm, commitment and dedication of our athletes.

I would like to emphasize how much pride should be given to the whole community, the fact that everyone can want to

practice and exercise, but also the honor and prestige that our champions score with their outstanding sports, name of Maia, not

infrequently with the glitter of gold, to the podiums in the four corners of the World.

There are many and diversified benefits arising from regular sports, among which are those that directly benefit our

health. But there are other advantages that deserve to be considered as well, such as discipline, self-knowledge, self-confidence,

self-esteem, mutual respect among athletes, fair play, obedience to rules and fulfillment of certain rituals. such as scrupulous

observance of ethics and sporting truth, essential values, without which Sport will not fully fulfill its role as promoter of social

peace.

As we know, in Martial Arts, all these values take on a rigor and precision in such a demanding way, that leads its

practitioners to more effectively teach this way of being and practice sports, becoming as a consequence of this practice, citizens

endowed with an inspiring civic serenity, which is often pointed socially as an example to follow.

I express to the Karate Club of Maia, my personal and institutional recognition, for the meritorious work that has been

developing in favor of the sporting development of our community.

Proof of the quality of its organizations and achievements, here it is again, in the fact of having had the courage and the

determination, to hold this event - "Maia European City of Goju-Ryu 2018", which brings to Maia, in addition to hundreds of

visitors, the best athletes of the sport, coming from the most diverse points of the Country and Europe.

I congratulate the Karate Club of Maia for the sports animation that the "Maia European City of Goju-Ryu 2018" will

provide to the community, the region and the country.

As my fraternal embrace of friendship, I warmly greet the participating athletes, coaches, judges, leaders, families of the

participants and the public in general, wishing that the whole event be lived in the perfect harmony of a sports party, here in this

house, Maia .

It is for us essential to innovate and create harmony between what we want to achieve and the specific interests of each participant. Our aim is always the welfare of the individuals and the groups.

Assuming this motto as our banner, our mission is to contribute to the promotion and the organization of this unique moment of celebration and socialization, along with the practice of karate at the highest level.

In competition will be the best national athletes of all ages, as well as world renowned illustrious competitors.

WELCOME MAIA . Maia is a Portuguese city situated on the North of the country, in the Oporto District. It has about 35 625 inhabitants. The city has an area of 83.14 km² and had 140 859 inhabitants in 2008. Presently, it is divided into 17 sub regions. Maia is in the centre of other major cities: on the north, the cities of Trofa and Santo Tirso; on the east, the city of Valongo; southeast, Gondomar; south, Oporto; southwest, Matosinhos; and northwest, Vila do Conde. HISTORY The area where the city is presently placed is inhabited for thousands of years, and there were found traces dating from the Paleolithic period. In some of the region`s hills traces of people from the Iron Age were found. Attracted by the wealthy soils and the abundance of the resources, Romans also left here visible marks of their occupation. In the mid-thirteenth century, this area extended from the city of Oporto up to the Ave and from the sea to the mountains. In 1304, however, these lands were integrated in Oporto, losing the political and administrative autonomy. In 1360, the first grantees were established in the region and in this year, King Peter I gave the landlord of Azurara, with the lands of Maia, to the Prince Dinis, his son. The history of this county is also closely linked to the founding of the nation. Some authors argue that even the Prince Afonso Henriques was educated here, next to the family of Mendes da Maia, to whom the Archbishop of Braga, D. Paio Mendes, and the famous warrior Gonçalo Mendes da Maia, the "Lidador", so named for having entered into constant fearless fights against Saracens, belonged. In the early sixteenth century, King Manuel I granted the charter, which established the rents and grounds to be paid to the grantees of Maia’s lands, as well as how to carry out common punishments and justices. Between the years 1700 and 1836, the county was composed of 44 parishes and encompassed the entire sea range between the Leça and the Ave. With the administrative reforms initiated in 1836, it became a separate municipality, but reduced in area and number of parishes. In 1857 it was, even, extinct and it was necessary to wait until 1868 to have it restored. In1809, Napoleon's army of the Duke of Dalmatia, Marshal Soult, crossed Maia in its way to Oporto. In the turbulent years of liberal fights, between 1832 and 1834, it was the stage of bloody struggles between absolutists and liberals. On the 23th August, 1986, Maia was finally given the status of city.

Oporto International airport is about 15 minutes to Complexo Municipal de Ténis, by car or Taxi.

Citizens of EU and EEA: Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria ,Croatia , Cyprus, Czech Republic,

Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Montenegro, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia,

SPORTHALE ENTRIES .

All persons that want to assist the Tournament have to pay 1€ per day (this money revert to one charity

association.

Only Officials, Judges, athletes and coaches will receive Credential ID granting free entrance.

ACREDITATION & WEIGHT IN .

All Coach’s or national representative have to pick up the credentials and athletes have to do the weight in a

sporthall

COMPLEXO DE TÉNIS DA MAIA .

Infrastructure with 5 tennis courts discovered and 5 covered, six of them endowed with seats for the public.

All the courts have electric lighting and the floor is brick powder. It is worth mentioning the central court

used in major tennis events: Davis Cup, Mayan Youth International Cup and also for the big sports events

of various scopes: National Gymnastics Festival, Power Expo, Hip Hop International and Maia

International Karate Open. The facility also has two support spas, bar, medical office, press office, secretariat

and a bar to support sporting events.

The Capacity of the Tennis Complex in spectators is of 2000 people thus showing a great capacity to satisfy

all the needs of our athletes and present public.

The sporthall is situated in the center of Maia next to the Municipal Stadium.

KUMITE – less than 3 participants in one category: this category will be marged with next higher (if not possible:

the next lower) weight category.

KUMITE – 3 participants in one category: Table – System/Round- Robin: Fighter A vs Fighter B, B vs C, A vs C. If

tied after regular bout duration: Hikiwake (same as in Kumite Team)

KATA – Less than 2 participants in one category: this category will be merged with the next higher (if not possible:

the next lower) age category.
