Global diVersiTy – The Globes from The GeoGraphical insTiTuTe (Weimar)

The following paper deals with the non-academic context of geographic and cartographic scientific work in classical Weimar around 1800.

Founded in 1804 by Friedrich Justin Bertuch (1747–1822), the Geographical Institute was an important institution, which has contributed to a more or less local diffusion and popularisation of geographical knowledge through the medium of maps, atlases and itineraries. As an example, globes became part of the portfolio of this company until the late 1870ies.

This paper presents the intentions and the technical implementations for the range of celestial and terrestrial globes from the Bertuch-firm. Also different types of globerelated instruments could be exemplified by advertising brochu-res and historical textbooks.

At the 12th International Symposium for the Study of Globes it is possible to present unknown material from the Bertuch-firm estate emphasizing the ‘global diversity’ from Weimar for the first time.

The discoVery of The murad iii Globes and armillary sphere

In 1991, I received a telephone call from a client saying that she had inherited four brass bowls together with lots of pillars, two circular stands, a quantity of screws and two large brass rings.

She thought that these were part of a scientific instrument. We arranged to meet in Amsterdam. I was astonished at what I saw before me – a pair of dismantled Renaissance gilded-brass globes, terrestrial and celestial, of magnificent quality.

Furthermore, my client thought that she had, somewhere, a quantity of brass rings, more pillars attached to a base currently being used as an engine stand in her father’s garage.

The rest is history!

Gerard mercaTor (1512–1594) and his influence on The Globes of The 16Th cenTury

2012 will be the 500th anniversary of the birth of Gerard Mercator, the man who changed the cartography of modern times with sustainable effect. He created not only remarkable maps but also globe gores for a terrestrial and for a matching celestial globe (1541 resp. 1551). Furthermore an astrological disk which he made has been preserved.

However, his monumental world map from 1569 is best known. In this contribution will be discussed, in which extend the representation on this map was taken as a model by other globe makers at his times, for example Philipp Apian (terrestrial globe in the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, Munich, 1567).

Mercator and the LoxodroMes

Two lines are marked on the globe: the orthodrome, the shortest connection between two points, and the loxodrome, a line with a constant azimuth ß. These rhumb lines are critically important for navigation.

It is known that the loxodrome as a rhumb line was described by the Portuguese scientist Pedro Nunes in 1537 in his book “Duos Tradatos da carte marear”; this book was in Gerhard Mercator’s library.

Mercator’s terrestrial globes (from 1541) show loxodromes (incomplete) with an angular separation of 11°15´ (= 1/8 of 90°). However, loxodromes are largely meaningless on a globe; only loxodromes in a (conformable) map are important for navigation. Mercator is known to have realised this in his map of the world dating from 1569.

On a rotation surface, loxodromes intersect all meridians at the same angle. On a spherical surface, loxodromes (with the exceptions β = 0° and β = 180°) never reach the pole but wind around it infinitely (logarithmic spiral); on a cy-linder surface, they form a helix.

The logarithmic spiral has inspired mathematicians and artists to create remarkable designs; these will be shown by example.

The use of diGiTal imaGes in The conserVaTion of Globes

Few globes survive without some evidence of change from age or exposure to the materials used in their fabrication. These changes are not necessarily compromising, but when they are, options are available to address damage to the sphere or stand, loss of the paper or design media, staining or entrenched grime, discoloration or loss of the protective varnish, or earlier poor quality repairs. While an improvement in condition is the primary focus of treatment and the foundation of an improvement in appearance, attention directed specifically to the legibility of a globe is equally legitimate.

In developing a conservation treatment strategy, it is critical to compare how a particular globe could appear relative to its individual condition, and how a particular globe should appear relative to other examples of the same edition. A willingness to invest the resources inherent to complex overall treatments is supported by an improved awareness of how the best surviving historic globes appear and by the body of examples that illustrate different strategies and degrees of conservation and restoration. Developments of particular interest include the phenomena of re-treatment to improve earlier efforts at conservation and, more specifically, the option of filling losses via digital photography, image manipulation and archival printing which can have a major effect on an appearance of authenticity.

The presentation will focus on how these concerns and developments have influenced the local and overall treatment of several sixteenth through nineteenth century globes.

coronelli Globes of The Museo Galileo – istituto e Museo di storia della scienza, florence: hisTo-ry and resToraTion

The Museo Galileo – Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza in Florence preserves four globes more than 1 m in dia-meter ( 3 feet and half) and two globes about 50 cm in diameter (1 foot and half), all made by Vincenzo Coronelli. The globes come from the collection of the Medici family, rich in works of art and scientific masterpieces. This paper aims to introduce the history of these very important globes, from the Medici until today, and the results of the re-cent restoration work. The paper presents also the results of investigations made with innovative technologies. These investigations allowed a better knowledge of the construction techniques and revealed the particularities of the ma-terials used. Finally, the paper explains the several phases of the restoration process and the techniques employed in order to bring the globes back to their original condition and render them perfectly understandable.

Interaktive real-time Anwendungen nutzen typische polyedrische Annäherungen an Kugeln.

a simple ToolkiT for VirTual Globes and map recTificaTion

Virtual globes allow to experience the spherical model of our planet with undistorted maps on a computer display. Interactive real-time applications typically use polyhedral approximations of spheres.

This paper presents a simple, fast method of processing globe gores and also other maps into virtual globes, which relies on the available texture mapping capabilities of modern graphics hardware. The achieved quality appears suf-ficient for many purposes.

The conversion requires the definition of a coordinate grid from which the polyhedral mesh is computed. This grid typically uses the resolution of the coordinate grid visible in the source images. Maps without coordinate grid should be preprocessed. The texture images are displayed on the screen, and the pixel coordinates of the grid points are assigned by mouse click.

The same globe definition files can be used to process the source images into virtual globes of different 3D graphic formats, or also into rectilinear maps, which may allow easier direct comparison between different sources.

GeomaGneTism and Globes: Globes WiTh maGneTic declinaTion lines

A new era dawned in the field of research into geomagnetism with the publication of Edmond Halley’s “Tabula nau-tica” in 1701; this was the first map to show magnetic declination lines. It was no less a personage than Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646–1716) who not only proposed to Tsar Peter I that geomagnetic observation stations should be set up in the Russian empire, but also compiled a memorandum on this subject in 1712 which was accompanied by a “Globus magneticus” on which declination lines were marked. Alexander von Humboldt himself saw Leibniz’ “little hand globe” (terrella) in Hanover some time before 1829. It is fortunate that Humboldt left this description, as this globe sadly appears to have been lost. However, both Anders Akerman and Fredrik Akrel in Sweden made globes with magnetic declination lines during the second half of the 18th century; a few of these can still be seen in Uppsala. It was one of these globes that inspired Norwegian physicist Christopher Hansteen (1784–1873) to undertake his research into geomagnetism. Moreover, two globes of interest for geomagnetism are located in Greenwich; one dates from 1795, the other from 1845.

Hardly any research has been made into the topic of geomagnetism and globes to date. Here it is only possible to attempt to take stock of the situation as per the knowledge currently available in the hope that this contribution may inspire further research by as many globe specialists as possible.

a Globe conTradicTinG neWTon and einsTein

In 1877 Aurel Anderssohn was granted a German Reich patent for a disassembled globe. A few years later he allowed the free use of the patent, because he was more interested in seeing the spread of his ideas by this globe than to gain economic profit from it

The background of this theory and the idea for this globe was formed by the activities of the Breslauer Physikalischer Verein, which claimed – under his guidance – to be able to explain Isaac Newton’s theory of gravitation in a new and better way. The theory was never recognized by the academic world.

Interestingly enough, in the beginnings of the 20th century the theory and the name of Aurel Anderssohn was taken up by a group of non–academic physicists and “world riddle solvers“, who wished to find support for their arguments against Albert Einstein and his theory of relativity.

In 2010 the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin could acquire a copy of “Anderssohn’s Patent theilbarer Globus“. Thus it became clear that the instrument was not only produced in a series of some single items which had been documented by photograph, but the series production had actually started in 1880.

In connection with this extraordinary globe, the author asks the question whether globes were more frequently pro-duced in order to support a theory or whether they were a real active contribution to scientific discourse.

The “Globe“ as an obJecT of research. Globe research aT The uniVersiTies of Vienna and inns-bruck in The 19Th and early 20Th cenTuries

In the second half of the 19th century scholars of the Austro-Hungarian Empire began to study the history of carto-graphy. But which role did the research on old globes play? This talk will deal with the beginnings of globe research at the universities of Vienna and Innsbruck in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Special attention will be paid to the geographers Franz von Wieser (1848–1923) and Eugen Oberhummer (1859–1944), who can be called pioneers in this field. The aim of the paper is an analysis of the content of globe studies of Wieser and Oberhummers. We owe to Eugen Oberhummer not only the first research activities regarding the globes in Vienna, but also the first scientific description of the Brixen Globes of 1522. In these studies he worked together with his assistant Arnold Feuerstein (1881–1942). Franz von Wieser was a pioneer regarding the research of the globe of Johannes Schöner (1477–1547) produced in 1523, which he rediscovered in the 1880s and which he described in detail in his two essays “Magalhaes-Strasse und Austral-Continent auf den Globen des Johannes Schöner” (1881) and “Der verschollene Globus des Johan-nes Schöner von 1523“ (1889).

The World on one’s shoulders – ThouGhTs on The TWo auGsburG Globe cups in The Green VaulT (dresden)

My talk focuses on the two Augsburg globe cups in the treasury of the Green Vault, which feature Hercules and St. Christopher.

These two exponents of the goldsmith’s art, created between 1624 and 1629, not only show the current state of knowledge about the earth and sky at that time. They were also able to move over the table by means of a device inside the base; and if the top half of the globe was removed, they could also be used as drinking vessels. Moreover, these were collector’s items typical of those found in the royal art chamber, combining technical skill with intellectual discernment.

My talk pays particular attention to the fact that the supporting figure of St. Christopher was repeatedly described as Atlas in the inventories of the 17th and 18th centuries, although their designation leaves no doubt from a present-day viewpoint. On this basis of this assumption, it is logical to shed more light on the iconography of these figures. In early modern times, these two figures, who featured largely in Greek mythology, became symbolic in the rapidly changing science of astronomy, as shown for example by the title page of the celestial atlas “Uranometria” from Augsburg, created in 1603 by Johannes Bayer. At the same time, a portrayal of St. Christopher was developed which built on the Atlas iconography and transferred the ancient image of Atlas carrying the world to the religious motive of the saint who carried Christ. The significance of these globe cups with Hercules as the virtuous hero and St. Christopher as the symbol of the devout Christian is also rooted in their symbolism as instruments for identifying the ruler.

The carToGraphic sources of elias lenker’s and Johannes schmidT’s Globe cups (1626–1629) in The Green VaulT in dresden

When the Augsburg-based gold and silversmiths Elias Lenker and Johannes Schmidt manufactured the globe cups (according to the hallmarks between 1626 and 1629), Amsterdam was the European centre of cartography. Here the publishing houses run by the families of Willem Jansz. Blaeu (1571–1638) and Jodocus Hondius d. J. (1593–1629) competed with one another to produce not only elaborate atlases but also outstanding terrestrial and celestial globes. These globes were the model for numerous productions by succeeding cartographers and publishers throughout the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation.

Based on this thesis, comparisons were made between the maps of the Augsburg globe cups in the Green Vault and the globes produced by the famous Dutch publishing houses. These comparisons led to an interesting map genesis beginning with Hondius in Amsterdam and continuing via Giuseppe die Rossi (working in 1615) in Milan to Isaac II. Habrecht (1589–1633) in Strasbourg.

The presentation proves that the cartography of the globes in the Green Vault was copied from the pair of globes pro-duced by Isaac II. Habrecht. The cartographic sources of Habrecht’s terrestrial and celestial globes are also discussed; surprisingly, these did not come from the same source.

descripTion and daTinG of a silVer and Gold-GilT celesTial Globe-cup WiTh The enGlish royal coaT of arms

The globe-cup is a Ciborium. A detailed analysis of the techniques used and material is made. Electrolysis and histo-ricism can be excluded.

The constellations are from Uranographia by Hevelius, 1690. A secretive message “Pegasus ex Medusae Georgonis“ (Elegia VIII from Ovid in exile) is found. The Last Judgement with the Archangel Michael by J. Saedeler I is identified. The order of the garter, royal coat of arms (empty shield), and English crown of Edward I (1661), are defined.

Conclusion: this extraordinary globe (cartouche empty), was intended as a family or diplomatic gift for a catholic Eng-lish monarch “in Exile“, e.g. James II, or Maria Stuart, whose Godfather was King Louis XIV or “James III“, who failed to go to his coronation in 1715, returned to France, refused the crown of Poland and married the granddaughter of King Sobieski III in Rom in 1719.

neue bildfindunGen am sTernenhimmel im 17. JahrhunderT

neW imaGery aT The sTarry sky in The 17Th cenTury

The contribution is devoted to a comparison of the momentous in the image tradition, as well as non-influential imagery of celestial charts and globes. Key examples of the conventional imagery tradition will hereby serve as an exemplary view, such as the “Uranometria“, published by Johannes Bayer in 1603, and the imagery on the globes by Willem Janszoon Blaeu. These will be hereby presented in comparison to the inconsequential reinventions of the constellations in the 17th and early 18th century. The focus apart from the celestial charts by Julius Schiller (1627) and the celestial globe by Amanzio Moroncelli (1713), which reinterpret the Christian sky, is on the heraldic reinventions by Erhard Weigel. While taking various sources into account, a close assessment has to be made as to what social, economic or political reasons, were the underlying basis for these novelties and how they in vain tried to transform the established knowledge system of the sky.

ein paar nichT dokumenTierTer Globen des 16. JahrhunderTs

a pair of unrecorded 16Th cenTury Globes

This talk would treat a pair of remarkable, but as yet unknown, 16th century globes. While there is no direct indication on either globe as to the cartographer or date of manufacture, extensive research has established that the globes are surely 16th century.

The celestial globe is a very close copy of Caspar Vopel’s 1536 celestial globe. The terrestrial globe is clearly based on Gerard Mercator’s 1541 globe, but is smaller in size. Its geographical configuration, toponomy and legends closely follow the Mercator globe. However, in certain regions, the hitherto unrecorded globe’s geography has changed to reflect important Spanish explorations subsequent to 1541 (Coronado, Orellana, Cabrillo, Valdavia). These changes, combined with additional changes in a matching terrestrial globe now at Rome’s Museo Copernicano, suggest a date of manufacture of 1550–1565. In addition, the terrestrial globe’s close correspondence, in selected toponomy and texts, to Giacomo Gastaldi’s famous 1561 World Map, together with other factors, strongly suggests a Northern Italian origin for the globes.

Jahrhundert.

The Globe-relaTed TerresTrial and celesTial models of chrisTlieb benedikT funk

Christlieb Benedikt Funk (1736–1786) worked at Leipzig University in the 1770s. To illustrate his lectures on applied mathematics with objects and models, he created various depictions of the earth and sky in simplified globe form and as cones.

Funk was not the first person to attempt to portray the world in this way. Models had already been created at the be-ginning of the 18th century by Johann Jakob Zimmermann (1644–1693) and Johann Ludwig Andreae (1667–1725). Funk’s abstract cardboard models for visualising the earth and the sky have survived in various states of quality and preservation. Corresponding copper plates are also found in the tutors compiled by Funk.

What is important now is to research the origins and process of these unusual, inconspicuous and rare globographic research objects so that we can understand Funk’s work and methods. For this purpose, the historical locations and continents are marked on the terrestrial bodies and the positions of the stars in the celestial illustrations in their contemporary context. The “Atlas coelestis” of Johann Gabriel Doppelmayr (1677–1750), published in 1742, played a decisive role in demonstrating the intention to produce a celestial cone in Funk’s style. The terrestrial bodies, on the other hand, draw on theoretical ideas by Johann Andreas von Segner (1704–1777), who worked on this alternative form of cartographical illustration in the 1770s.

Scientific and historical analysis of the various terrestrial and celestial cones and the globe-like terrestrial and celestial bodies facilitate innovative access to the practices involved when manufacturing cartographic models and apparatus at the end of the 18th century.

The molyneuX Globe(s) of kassel

The globe pair by Emery Molyneux has always been one of the most intriguing items of the Kassel globe collection. Unfortunately, only the celestial one survived the Second World War; until that time, Kassel owned the only extant Molyneux globe pair from the 16th century. It is still unclear how those globes ended up in the princely collection of Kassel: the traditional assumption puts their acquisition in the context of the astronomical interests of Landgrave Wil-helm IV., but without offering tangible historical evidence for such a claim. My paper argues, that such an explanation is unlikely and, by trying to piece together the scattered available information, suggests an alternative account of why and how those two globes likely made their way from Lambach to Kassel.

The paper offers a survey of what is known of the life of the Paris instrument-maker Nicolas Bion (1652–1723), paying particular attention to his pioneering production of globes, armillary spheres and planetaria, and the books he publis-hed to accompany them. Bion’s debts to, even plagiarism of, his predecessors is examined, as are his relations with the Académie des Sciences. The provisions of his will and the succession of his son Jean Baptiste Nicolas are also evoked.

The heraldic silVer Globe of erhard WeiGel in The kassel collecTions

The attempt made by Jena professor Erhard Weigel (1625–1699) to replace the familiar constellations with heraldic arms gave rise to an interesting group of celestial globes. These all comprise metal spheres on which the constellati-ons are embossed in coloured enamel.

The object in the Astronomisch-physikalisches Kabinett Kassel is one of the foremost among the approx. 18 heraldic globes still extant today. The globe itself is made of rolled silver and has a diameter of 35 cm. The constellations – the classical images are visible under the heraldic ones – are executed with a high degree of artistic skill; the background is finely chased throughout.

This talk traces Weigel’s draft of the constellations and presents the silver globe in Kassel.

erhard WeiGels pancosmus Globus (1696) in kopenhaGen

Dänische Quellen geben in einigen Fällen ergänzende Informationen.

erhard WeiGel’s pancosmus Globe of 1696 aT copenhaGen

An eight-page description in German published in 1697 is central to any study of the Copenhagen Pancosmus. Though quite detailed, it leaves many questions unanswered regarding its construction and movement. One may wonder, for instance, how the globe was supported at the lower end, as the segment around the south celestial pole could be removed.

Danish sources, although few and brief, sometimes give supplementary information. So, the exact sums spent by the Danish king on Weigel’s project is revealed. The daily movement of the globe is also explained in a way differing somewhat from the description.

This contribution presents a very general sketch of the construction – showing the inclination of the axis, the size of the opening for spectators, distance above ground etc. – as I think it must have been.

My main interest and field of study has been art history. Aged 71, I’m still a student – and feel like one. My way to the world of globes and maps came via art: the baroque pulpit of a church in Bergen (Norway) is adorned with a large imitation of a Blaeu celestial globe. In order to compile a list of old globes in Norway I had to travel around the country. The most interesting of the objects discovered was a heraldic globe by Erhard Weigel. This again led to his Copenhagen Pancosmus.

Jena – a ciTy beTWeen hisTory and hiGh–Tech

The city of Jena thrives on a fascinating combination of vibrant history and intellectual tradition, attractive scenery, innovative international research and business and youthful student life. This wealth of variety creates a unique back-drop which gives this small, lively city a unique charm.

JENA’S SCENERY

The university city with its wealth of tradition lies on the middle reaches of the river Saale. Numerous monuments re-dolent with cultural history and linked with some of the greatest names on record mark the landscape in Jena’s Saale valley. Nestling in scenery reminiscent of the Mediterranean with shell limestone cliffs up to 400 m in height, the city offers not only a large number of sights but also a variety of cycle paths and attractive scenery for walking.

JENA’S ACADEMIC AND INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT

Jena has been one of the most famous academic cities ever since the university, the Alma Mater Jenensis, was found-ed in 1558. During the 18th century, the city on the Saale enjoyed a golden age in which it became Germany’s most important intellectual centre thanks to its close relationship with the nearby royal city of Weimar and the support it received from the poet and minister Goethe.

JENA’S ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

During the second half of the 19th century, the work of the scientific and industrial triumvirate Carl Zeiss, Otto Schott and Ernst Abbe turned Jena into an industrial city. Their cooperation gave rise to the world-famous Zeiss works and the Jena glassworks Schott & Genossen (Schott & Partners). This effective partnership between research institutes and industrial companies has proven its worth right up to the present day, and is the reason for Jena’s exceptional reputa-tion as a centre of high technology.

JENA’S MODERN CULTURAL LANDSCAPE

Along with museums of science, technology, literature and art history, Jena is home to a modern, attractive cultural landscape. The annual open-air festival Kulturarena, for example, draws international stars to Jena, and the diverse programmes presented by the Jena Theaterhaus (Theatre), the Jena Kunstverein (art society) and the Jena Philharmo-nic include any number of individual, first-class events.

CITY LIFE IN JENA

Students, business people and tourists greatly value the social life in the numerous cafés, restaurants and cosy pubs in the lovingly preserved streets of the old town. In the city centre, these mingle with modern shopping facilities such as the Goethe Galerie and the “neue mitte” in the 159 m JenTower, with a viewing platform providing a fantastic panoramic view of the city.

Weimar – kulTurhaupTsTadT europas 1999

Weimar – european ciTy of culTure 1999

Weimar is actually a park with a city located at its heart ... at least according to the writer and historian Adolf Stahr. The spirit of German classicism is still alive in the cultural city of Weimar, the spirit of the Weimar Republic, the spirit of the Bauhaus era. It is therefore no surprise that Weimar was elected Germany’s first European City of Culture in 1999.

That year, the classical city with its infinite cultural potential developed into a city with a future, a “symbol of Germa-ny”. Between the Goethe monuments and the Bauhaus University, between the Franz Liszt College of Music and the Buchenwald memorial, this city is today showing off its etire capacity for historical remembrance.

21st century Weimar has become a place of all-encompassing cultural education for people from all over the world. This journey back in time takes visitors to 22 historical houses and literary monuments. With the German National Theatre and the Klassik Stiftung Weimar, with its annual European art festival and the countless cultural events, both great and small, which are held on a daily basis, this city lives its culture.

Many paths lead through idyllic squares and winding lanes lined with shops and restaurants to the summer residen-ces of Belvedere and Tiefurt and along the Classical Road. And back to Europe’s City of Culture whenever you wish.

CULTURAL CURIOSITY AND CREATIVITY

Significant impulses for the development of cultural and technical innovations have emerged from Weimar in all ages of modern history. These have made the city famous, and these will also be its future. Building on a cultural curiosity and creativity which has endured throughout the centuries, it is important for Weimar as an educational centre to develop ideas for the global scientific community.

The neo-humanist ideal of education has been at home in Weimar ever since Anna Amalia’s day. In remembrance of the “Court of the Muses”, Franz Liszt was calling Weimar a “centre of contemporary art” as early as the middle of the 19th century. The Royal School of Art was founded in 1919, and prepared the way for the famous State Bauhaus. Even today, the Bauhaus University Weimar and the Franz Liszt College of Music are following in this tradition and com-bining arts, crafts and technology in ever new and surprising ways.

CREATIVE POTENTIAL FOR THE FUTURE

Weimar’s 6,000 students not only account for a tenth of the population – they are also the creative potential for the future of this city. In Weimar, the old and new arts go hand in hand: the sounds of violins and clarinets float out over the Platz der Demokratie from the windows of Carl August’s former palace until late in the evening; the Duchess Anna Amalia library, one of the three great research libraries, is also located here.

Visitors to the 12th International Symposium for the Study of Globes can marvel at the globe collection in the Duchess Anna Amalia Library, which also gives insights into “The World from Weimar”. Prepare yourself for a surprise!
